------------------------ The Prodigy - Band Bio ------------------------ Liam Howlett: All musical instruments Maxim Reality: Master of ceremonies Leeroy Thornhill: Dancer Keith Flint: Dancer (This information was provided by Mute Records) In February 1991, the Prodigy released their first 12" EP entitled What Evil Lurks, which is still a regular hardcore club anthem and, since its deletion, has become a much sought after piece of dance vinyl. On the back of the underground success of the What Evil Lurks EP, the Prodigy gigged extensively throughout the UK. On their first visit to Italy the band was treated like "pop" royalty and mobbed by ecstatic ravers. On August 12, 1991, the Prodigy released its second 12" "Charly" on XL Recordings, topping the UK national dance charts at #1 and reaching #3 on the UK singles chart. Liam Howlett, 23, is the musical force behind the Prodigy sound, although there are three other members who contribute to the live performance--dancers Leeroy Thornhill and Keith Flint, and M.C. Maxim Reality. Liam was once the DJ for London rap act Cut to Kill, though he quickly became disillusioned with the whole rap attitude and swayed towards the "love, peace, and happiness" vibe of the rave scene in early 1990. Liam is also a classically trained pianist, whose ambition was once to "get a record deal and put out a few tunes." Having achieved this goal in a very short period of time, Liam is now concentrating on maintaining his hardcore underground status by blending a unique sound of hip hop style with manic house beats. The next single, released December 30, 1991, was the "Everybody In The Place" EP, which bettered the success of "Charly" by peaking at #2 in the UK national singles chart, (after entering at #10) and was only kept out of the #1 spot by Queen's re-release of "Bohemian Rhapsody." The video for the single was shot in New York City and the release marked the beginning of the Prodigy's American deal with Elektra Entertainment. A fourth single, "Fire," released in September 1992, sampled Arthur Brown screaming "I am the God of hell-fire." "Fire" was available for a two week period only and its highest UK national chart position was #11. September 28, 1992 saw the release of the Prodigy Experience, the bands debut long player. The album contained new material plus older singles in remix form and dispelled rumors about dance albums not selling by debuting in the UK National Album Chart at #11, remaining on the chart for 25 weeks and being certified gold in the UK for sales of over 150,000 units. In addition to his work with the Prodigy, Liam's remixing services are also in demand. He's completed remixes for Dream Frequency, The Art Of Noise, Front 242 and Jesus Jones. The first single from the new album, "No Good (Start The Dance)," reached #3 in the UK national singles chart in May, (continuing the band's unbroken string of consecutive top 20 hits) prior to the June 1994 release of Music For The Jilted Generation, which entered the UK National Album Chart at #1 its first week. The Prodigy recently won MTV Europe's Music Award for "Best Dance Act" while the album was also nominated as one of Britain and Ireland's Top 10 albums in the Mercury Music Prize Award. Melody Maker called the album "bloody essential," while the NME likened Liam to "a Robocop and a modern day Beethoven all rolled into one." Select Magazine said Music For The Jilted Generation was "the best electronic pop record you'll hear this year" and said that the Prodigy "should be clasped tight as on of our very best techno talents." The Prodigy will complete the European leg of their "Jilted Tour," which has been sold out throughout, on New Year's Day in Dublin, Ireland. The North American leg of the tour is scheduled to commence in mid-April 1995 following the release in February of "Poison," the next single from the album. Now you've got the chance to remix the Prodigy yourself. Have fun.
