REVIEWS
THE ITALIAN JOB PUBLICITY
"CONTRADICTIONS EP" is Phil's debut release, stitching together a beguiling mix of electro and electro influenced techno. The four tracks were written in 1994 (by which time he'd bought a lot more gear) and co-produced with Simon Bowring at Pentatonik Studios.
MIXMAG
Anthoney Teasdale
The open minded quality music movement goes from strength to strength with this marvellous EP by the daftly-titles Schematix (You've been reading toomuch Sci-Fi lads!). Mixing together breakbeats, electro and techno, we're given a feast of electric dancefloor nosh to whip up the crowd and provide a brak from sometimes omnipresent 4/4 beat. The first track "Memorandum" does this best with its even more intense drums and jazzy breakdown thats soons brought into check by an analogue bass that really kicks off. The second track "I Mind" is a beautiful excursion, while "Daymere" adds deep acid overtunes to breakbeats and orchestral melody. Finishing off with "Magnum Six" a more abstract techno track that employs a spaced out drum riff and fucked up breakbeats. Enjoy it while you can.
RECORD MIRROR
The debut release from the 22-year-old, London-based Phil Holmberg has all the hallmarks of a dance fan brought up on electro and influenced by the likes of creative techno acts such as Pentatonik. Musically, the four-tracker has a Detroit-style techno feel but there's plenty of suprises and odd moments in there to make it a remarkable and rewarding debut. A talent to watch.
MUZIK
Chunked-up and funked-up electronic blippery from one of Pentatonik's live colloborators. Although at times this is too lithe and sinuous, that old Pentatonik trick of emotional string sections makes the high points flare brighter. Even if your feet are pointing in opposite directions.
