Overdue but worth the wait. You could call it their 'funk' outing but that would be overlooking the many elements that make up the music of MO BOMA. Bruno Heuze, himself a musician, a noted journalist from France (who doesn't support nuclear testing in the Pacific Islands!) provides a glowing review of the release. For those who are asking, "Myths part three" is currently being mastered and will be released early next year. It is a great trilogy. Reviewed by Bruno Heuze: " Inspired by British novelist, J.G. Ballard, the intercontinental group MO BOMA has produced a vast fresco in three parts. If the shading of Myths Of The Near Future, Part One, released in 1994, was that of dawn and its mysterious perfumes, MYTHS OF THE NEAR FUTURE, PART TWO, erupts with the blazing red of an electric savanna, vibrating under a sun at its zenith. Inside a red hot melting pot, MO BOMA creates a gleaming alchemy -- the sparkle of brass and copper, the profoundness of ebony, the glimmer of quartz and freshness of ceramics, intermix between the waves of an electric plasma with the force of sheer lightning. Principle composer Carsten Tiedemann, works with the multiple paths of percussion, passing through Africa, Indonesia and India. Juggling the materials and sonorities, he stakes out the most jubilant rhythmic avenues, traced with exhalation and mastery within an affluent jungle, amidst the fluorescent contours emitted by the fulminous guitars. Expert in the intermarriage of the bass guitar with the electronic world, Skuli Sverrisson shatters these landscapes with seismic buzzing and whirring and infrasonic pulses. Continually pushing the edifice forward, his profound groove has the magnitude of trembling earth and liquid power of the large rivers carrying their brown waters through Africa. Illuminating the ensemble, Jamshied Sharifi pulls from his keyboards cloudy streams which shine between the mountain masses and lets electrified haloes dance in an environment saturated with deep aromas. In this album, MO BOMA magnificently diffuse their fold geographies and visionary architectures. There, Hassell's Fourth World, the tectonic eruptions of Christian Vander and the spiraling marches of Weather Report cross each other. In under 50 minutes, Myths Of The Near Future, Part Two offers 12 solar dances which make the heart beat in phase with that of the planet, projecting the spirit into the cosmos." ======================= We don't have to tell you who Lisa Gerrard (DEAD CAN DANCE) is but maybe we should remind you that PIETER BOURKE of SOMA is touring with her as Lisa launches her solo album around the world. Pieter is an accomplished percussionist and has also recorded with Ms Gerrard on her 4AD release. SOMA are releasing a CD single in Europe, XCS-028 "Sleepwalker", with a bonus track and there is a video to accompany the release. Expect some airtime on MTV Europe and cable channels across the US of A. Pieter is hoping to meet the press on this world tour and EXTREME is hoping this will lead to a tour by SOMA. We are working hard on logistics right now and will be able to give you more news next month. Just as a hint, it's planned for Paris in October. ================================= PABLO'S EYE have been heralded with accolades by everyone who hears them and it is no surprise. Axel, lead conspirator of the collective, is working towards PABLO'S EYE playing live. London venues are already showing interest. It will be a dynamic two-piece with Dirk Wachtelaer on percussion. A new EP is already underway, tentatively titled "AMB 7" and it has 50 minutes of all new music. The music can be described as the ultimate in electro-chillout mixing and has that special magic so much a part of "You Love Chinese Food." Be sure also to keep your eyes open for the video-clip to go with this release. A few reviews: "'You Love Chinese Food' defies unspoken rules rarely broken by more prominent practitioners of Electronica... Pablo's Eye goes well beyond most of what passes for Trance, Ambient and postmodernism-always-rings-twice Fourth Worldism. Tenth World music anyone?" -- Paul Schutze, THE WIRE "I'll make this short, because after three full times through this intense, unique album, I still don't know quite what to say. I could list details like recording places and dates, what instruments were used (samplers, keys, guitars, heavy percussion, singular voices), what samples were tossed into this weirdly hyper ambient mix, but it would tell you little. Once again, Extreme has stumped me with an ensemble beyond printed words. Honk if you like ambient, jazz, techno-roots, Bill Burroughs and strange violins." -- Cliff Furnald , CMJ "NEW WORLD" "Very similar to the fractured, feverish reconstituted music of Carl Stone, Pablo's Eye assembles music and audio shreds into a startling collage of subconsciously inspired music. It transfixed me." -- D.B.Spaulding, KOROVA MULTIMEDIA "Pablo's Eye isn't a band so much as a conspiracy, a temporary collection of like-minded sound manipulators who get together, do their damage and disappear across the globe to solo careers. Combining the talents of artists from Europe, Africa and North America, you might expect Pablo's Eye to sound like another world beat band. Far from it; combining rhythmic and timbral influences from their various backgrounds, Pablo's Eye comes up with a sound that is located somewhere in the air, in the aether where radio waves and dreams collide. The result is like spinning the dial on a radio pulling down signals from stations across time, space and places you've never dreamed of, but would like to visit." -- Richard Kadrey, WAVE (Belgium) ============================ LAND, Jeff Greinke and his merry band of Hassellesque jazz musos, are planning a show late September in Seattle. If you have never been to the city of coffee shops or you've never been up that needle that keeps showing up in more movies than Tom Hanks then stay tuned for next months report. (The band is also working on possible tour dates in China!) ============================ THE FIRE THIS TIME release, "Dancing on John Wayne's Head" is being acknowledged as a truly great musical and cultural experience. You are advised to investigate it if you haven't already. It's spinning at No. 10 on the CMJ world music charts and is outplaying the new Bob Marley compilation. Seems like the word is out!!! >From some of the reviews: "[An] incisive look at native cultures in the modern world. Producer/musician Pat Andrade has brought together an amazing cast of characters to bring a message of liberation and progress. Politi-dub master Oku Onuora makes his first appearance in a multicultural band, along with folks from Africa, North and South America, the Caribbean and the north Atlantic. John Trudell, Chuck D, and a host of other speakers raise their voices to the musical and social cause of unity between peoples in a slow grooving, bass heavy dub travelogue/dialogue. Of particular note is "Ohtokin", Onuora's slow building chant over a simple piano, bass and drum which tells of the trials of disenfranchisement suffered by the "first nation" peoples. In its steady pace is a history of shame vs. pride, faith vs. theft." -- Cliff Furnald, CMJ "These recordings are not subtle in their messages of resistance to oppression; although hard hitting in their convictions, they are not mired in crude agitprop formulas. They are instead very sophisticated musical/lyrical blends concerning themselves with past/present/future activist bonds between people of African and First Nations descent.... A must for your next conscious party!" -- Ron Sakolsky, THE BEAT "What's immediately most impressive about the Fire This Time collective is its vastly disparate, and yet concise, amalgamation of people and their musical heritages... the varied cast on this recording opens the floor up to speakers as politically-charged as Chuck D. and John Trudell, as well as an impressive host of reggae, dub and Native American performers and activists... As a musically and socially-oriented project, The Fire This Time forms a convincing plea for progress and unity. For proof of possibilities, look no further than this multicultural dialog." -- Colin Helms, CMJ "Another bold and experimental dub project... a striking blend of reggae, funk, world music and miscellaneous sampled elements. This music lies on the borders away from reggae, more into the world of Consolidated, LPC or Michael Franti and Spearhead... a very powerful statement that deserves to be heard on the airwaves." -- James Lien, CMJ "By far one of the most thought-provoking works to be released this year. Check it!" -- Roberto Angotti, Reggae Runnings, MEAN STREET ============================= UPCOMING RELEASES (Fall '95): GROOVY -- "Groovy" GROOVY is a new project from DAN BURKE, founding member of ILLUSION OF SAFETY. In Dan's own words; "This progressive space music is similar to acid-jazz but has a strong '70's disco feel to it. Lots of fun space sounds, sensuous grooves and some sweet vocals by Layna B. add up to a humorous and groovy time!" It is a sure-fire way to entice you into flairs and safari suits as it explores 70's disco, space music and acid-jazz with total abandon. It's subtitled 'the rebirth of retro-cool'!!! It's heading your way the end of September. MERZBOW -- "Music For Bondage Performance 2" 75 minutes of the Best Noise Music ever to come from the far east (file under japanese/isolationist/noise)! There is included in this a 30 minute piece that could not fit on Bondage 1. It is a killer!!
