Full details next newsletter! ================================= >From the Reviewers... MO BOMA , "Myths of The Near Future part two" "In this second release from a 1993 session, the Australian world beat band Mo Boma brings forth more of their scintillating music. Taking the title and (I presume) a lot of conceptual inspiration from the fiction of J.G. Ballard, band members Carsten Tiedemann, Skuli Sverrisson and Jamshied Sharifi present world music in a new light, by arranging the instruments and melodies against trancey suites of synths and ambience. Sounds easy? Sounds like Deep Forest? Nope, Mo Boma is a well-oiled concept executed with dedicated finesse. MYTHS OF THE NEAR FUTURE races forward in a carriage constructed of polyrhythms and folk instrumentation that belies it's futuristic, sleepy spirit. Listening to the music, one is thrilled by the complexity and spontaneity; focusing elsewhere, the music diffuses into a veil of subdued music that sneaks into earshot. From a base Down Under, Mo Boma reaches out to the world with a musical message that is as enthralling as it is timeless. -- D. B. Spaulding , Korova Multimedia LAND "Land" Experimental electronic musician Jeff Greinke joins forces with percussionist Ed Pias, trumpet player Lesli Dalaba, and electric guitarist Dennis Rea for a more electro-acoustic outing than normal Greinke fare. His three fellow musicians have evident strong backgrounds in jazz and world musics which expand Greinke's own vocabulary while they express some of their own. The results are pretty intriguing... "Land" works because it takes chances, as shown expertly within the noisy ethnic jazz of "Bustle" and "Jacks" - smart experimental music that avoids intellectual trappings, retaining a sense of identity and cohesiveness. -- Bryan Reesman, AP "LAND demonstrate themselves here to be a top-rate group with a keen ear for the layers of diverse musics. This release should appeal to fans of jazz, world music, and beat-oriented, trance-ambirnt sounds. A definite candidate for repeat listenings." -- Chris Meloche, Metro Times (Detroit) PABLO'S EYE "You Love Chinese Food" This improvisational quartet defy categorization on their latest album, blending together a myriad sounds and approaches. Versed in many different schools of music (from soukous to rock to jazz), P.E. aspire to push musical boundaries, employing electronics, guitar, bass, drums, strings, and spoken word fragments which seem random but are distinct in sound and approach... The overall sound is simultaneously soothing and mentally engaging. -- Bryan Reesman, AP "Every sound seems to have its place, but the net result is often unpredictable and always intriguing. It is a surreal pastiche of music that seems to be from a yet-to-be-discovered culture. This is music for a late-night waking dream or a journey through uncharted territory" -- Chris Meloche, Metro Times (Detroit) SOCIAL INTERIORS "The World Behind You" Most of this album consists of beautiful yet eerie soundscapes constructed by Rik Rue and Shane Fahey. Their years of experience in recording studios is evident in the way they take materials as simple as environmental sounds, throw in occasional samples and manipulated sax and flute, and produce landscapes the size of worlds. Many musicians, from Christoph Heemann (formerly of HNAS) to Robert Hampton (of Loop, and now Main) seem to be discovering the decades of electroacoustic music out out by labels lik e INA/GRM. It seems Rue and Fahey have heard it as well, for much of the material here is cast from the same mold. "Intrusions" sounds like a hellish night journey through a primeval swamp. The minimal "Modern Sleep", with its distant drones, sounds like a trip to Mars. In each case, original sound seems to come from environmental recordings, instruments or other acoustic sources. But by the time Rue and Fahey are done with them, they've been transfo rmed into something else." -- Scott Lewis, OPTION ============================ LAND play Seattle. Jeff Greinke's LAND are playing a show September 29th in Seattle. There's still time to make it to the North-west corner and experience LAND performing tracks from their debut album and exciting new tracks. ============================ LAND Interview Find out what Jeff Greinke and Dennis Rea have to say about LAND and how four great musicians came together to produce such an exciting debut album. Listen to ECHOES on OCTOBER 12th and hear more about their 'intuitive improvisations'. (ECHOES are also planning a Living Room Concert with Jeff Greinke so that is also worth watching for!) ============================= UPCOMING RELEASES (Fall/Winter '95): GROOVY -- "Groovy" GROOVY is a new project from DAN BURKE, founding member of ILLUSION OF SAFETY. In Dan's own words; "This progressive space music is similar to acid-jazz but has a strong '70's disco feel to it. Lots of fun space sounds, sensuous grooves and some sweet vocals by Layna B. add up to a humorous and groovy time!" It's already out and causing a lot of raised eyebrows in Europe. We decided to wait till the end of October with this one for America. Just blame it on the forces of nature, and shipping services!! MERZBOW -- "Music For Bondage Performance" A reissue of what has been heralded as the best MERZBOW album ever. Comes complete with the original booklet. Sensational, to say the least!! VARIOUS ARTISTS: "Assemblage, Vol 2" The SOCIAL INTERIORS bonus track is called "Traces of Mercury" and it makes a worthwhile addition to this label sampler. PABLO'S EYE - "You Have a Yearning For Perfection" When you hear the music you will know what the title means. This Belgian collective have remixed AMB 7, from "You Love Chinese Food", and added a new track JACO. JACO is in 4 parts, and combines all the elements of trip-hop, minimalism and polyrhythmic adventure with that special atmosphere that is unique to PABLO'S EYE. This an EP release with over 60 minutes of music, unbelievable value!, and is coming out at the same time as the new AMB 7 video will be seen on the broadcast video channels. This EP is an exciting new addition to the phenomonen that is PABLO'S EYE. Just wait till you see and hear them live. ================================== FILM REVIEW - HELL BENTO! A way out documentary on the Japanese subculture by Adam and Anna Broinowski, including revealing interviews with the Yakuza, Bushido Bikers and S&M fetishists. For all Merzbow fans there is a concise and interesting interview with Masami Akita. It explains a lot of why he does the music he does. Rumour has it that this documentary will NOT be shown in Japan! Opens in Australia September 29 and destined for a cinema near you. ================================== EXTREME WEB NEWS: In July, the Extreme Web Site moved to http://www.xtr.com/extreme/ Sound samples of new releases, and on-line ordering are available (with media and DJ discounts).
