=================================================================== PRESS RELEASE & ARTIST BIO FILE UNDER: AMBIENT/EXPERIMENTAL/COLLAGE SOCIAL INTERIORS "The World Behind You" (XCD-029) "The World Behind You" is the debut release from SOCIAL INTERIORS; a dazzling display of musical adventure. SOCIAL INTERIORS developed from interjections of local sound commentaries amidst the presentation of FM radio programs from 1984. These shows featured short dialogues and cut-ups from media and other sonic networks. Since then, SOCIAL INTERIORS became sonic thrill seekers using decoyed and doctored sounds from many regional and global sources, such as urban and environmental areas, sound grabs, tapes of instrumental passages, and text bartered from musicians and vocalists. Compositions were developed through the use of recording technology. These sound sources were welded with studio tape techniques and then mixed into continuous and abrupt shapes for tape pieces and performances. The result: a surprisingly coherent soundscape for aural navigation. SOCIAL INTERIORS includes the talents of RIK RUE, tape manipulator extraordinaire, and SHANE FAHEY, a founding member of the seminal group THE MAKERS OF THE DEAD TRAVEL FAST. Guest performers on "The World Behind You" are JIM DENLY, recognized internationally as a leading improviser on bass flute and alto saxophone, and JULIAN KNOWLES on sample keyboard. BIO: SOCIAL INTERIORS RICK RUE For Rick Rue, environmental sounds have always provided abstract and subconscious pleasure and an inner understanding of the physical. Since the early 1980's he has been involved in composing with environmental and found sounds. Utilizing analog and digital technology in a variety of recording techniques through a wide range of natural settings from Bushland to urban areas, he transforms these recordings into soundscapes that have evolved into radiophonic works, sound installation compositions and live pe rformances. His music is also found on solo CD and collaborative tape and CD releases, dance and film soundtracks and other multimedia productions. His solo and collaborative works have been broadcast and performed throughout Australia, Europe, Japan and the US. Rik Rue also uses "live tape" and digital manipulations in various performance projects with Jon Rose, MIND/BODY/SPILT, SOCIAL INTERIORS, and as a member of the contemporary Australian music group, MACHINES FOR MAKING SENSE, where he uses sampling and the recording medium itself as an instrument. Rik Rue's most recent releases include "Voice-Capades" and "Ocean Flows", both solo releases, and "On Second Thoughts" with MACHINES FOR MAKING SENSE. "With dangerous irony and subversive skill, he constructs hyper-rash collision collages from appropriated noises, marauding through, salvaging and juxtaposing the hysterical excesses of a panic culture's electronic mass media and impacting them into frenzied, hilarious moments of magnetic sound particles!!" -- A.M.C. Contemporary Edition. SHANE FAHEY Shane Fahey was a founding member of the experimental rock group, THE MAKERS OF THE DEAD TRAVEL FAST, who recorded 2 albums and performed live from 1979 to 1982. He joined fellow M Squared label band SCATTERED ORDER to record a studio EP and album and a live album between 1982 and 1984. He since studied acoustics at U.N.S.W. and has worked as an acoustic consultant ever since. He is a member of TENEBRAE, and has produced a series of cassette releases in collaboration with Rik Rue as SOCIAL INTERIORS. SOCIAL INTERIORS have culminated their 10 year history with this CD release of their most recent material. Shane has designed and built two successful studios, namely Megaphone Studios and Airmotion Studios, and continues to work as a sound engineer for numerous recordings, performance and film scores. He has also worked with Rik Rue on the soundtrack for two of Tess de Quincey's Lake Mungo projects -- the "Body Weather" video and the "Square of Infinity" film, which included a live performance.
