Hans Joachim Roedelius


German keyboardist Roedelius (born 1934) is in the unenviable
position of being one of the most important, and yet least 
recognized musicians on the German electronic music scene.
He has been active since the late 1960's, when he was a
founding member of the Zodiac Free Art Center in Berlin.  This
club was the birthplace of such bands as Tangerine Dream, Ash
Ra Temple, and Cluster.

Most of Roedelius' music is based on what he calls "pianism". 
What "pianism" involves is this: whenver he finds himself in 
the right frame of mind, Roedelius seats himself in front of 
his old Bosendorfer and attempts to put the feel of that 
moment on tape.  This results in what he calls "sound poetry"
or "sound painting".

Roedelius' work with Cluster and Brian Eno are milestones in
electronic music.  As for Roedelius' work with Harmonia, Eno
once called Harmonia "the world's most important rock band".

Roedelius' musical paintings portray not only moods, but often 
seem to carry echoes from distant times and places.  They are 
not, however, dreamscapes, but rather bittersweet memories, 
once forgotten, now half-remembered.  It is music for a quiet 
day.
