Date: Wed, 2 Feb 1994 16:15:21 +0000 (GMT) From: Stephen Hebditch Subject: 1993 UK-Dance Chart Thanks to all those who took part - we finally got there in the end. Underworld were just behind in total votes, with people split between their two big singles of the year. With just a couple of exceptions all the singles in the top 20 got a full UK release. THE 1993 UK-DANCE ALBUM CHART ----------------------------- 1. Orbital: The Brown Album [Internal] 2. Amorphous Androgynous: Tales of Ephidrena [Quigley] 3. One Dove: Morning Dove White [Boys Own] 4. Black Dog emerge as the most popular from Warp's Artificial Intelligence series so it looks like I'm in the minority. Surprisingly high entries for Robert Leiner's Source project and Spooky's Gargantuan which I didn't rate highly enough to buy at the time. I didn't include compilation albums in the chart - not many people voted for them anyway - but there were a few who listed Volume's Trance Europe Express. THE BEST EVENTS OF 1993 ----------------------- Last June's Megadog at Brixton Academy which literally blew my mind and introduced me to excellent live techno. Sabresonic - best regular club of 1993. The emergence of an Ambient movement and Mixmaster Morris's silver suit Leaving the UK after two years living there. You people are way ahead when it comes to music - but so behind when it comes to the rest of life! But I do miss the clubs... Being off my nut at Exodus in a mad venue called Dungeons in London. Fucking mad!!!!! :) Getting net access again. Universe (RIP) for having Dave Angel, Laurent Garnier & Sven Vath follow each other at Tribal Gathering. Someone playing Kylie in the house tent and getting away with it, the funniest moment of the year. Hardfloor's PA at Time Machine. The K Foundation for the year's best prank and changing the history of art. Megadog and Orb all-nighters. Sacha's jumper. Sex in the clubs. The year when dance music extended to producing album length records, ever extending definitions of itself and ever more names to describe them. The best thing was the range of musical styles available and the diverse sources now producing good dance music - even the French :). Is 1994 the year when it all gets too self-indulgent? The night with Tony Humphries at the Sheffield Sound City Festival. Zappelt weiter... The Orb, Live at Copenhagen Water Festival. Seeing Aphex Twin / Black Dog at The Ministry of Sound in March. The *BEST FUCKING CLUB* I've ever been to. The rise and rise of Warp Records. Blue. Recycle Or Die. Tunes coming back. The Rebirth of Cool (the best club in Finland). The 'Should restaurants provide water' debate. :) Fat Cat. Cardiff Megadog (although it finished too early). Senser / Orb at Glastonbury. Strictly Groovy - Swansea's first and finest house night. Still going strong. Buying my Mac. UK-Dance - it makes the mornings bearable. Being a Green party litter-picker at the Glastonbury festival again. Bjork on television. The Big Breakfast. Eddie Izzard. Squidgy analogue. The death of hardcore. Cosmic Baby at Club UK. Megadog at the Academy, Jah Shaka at the Rocket, FSOL on Kiss, and boots. Underworld at Manchester Academy. The re-emergence of funkiness, tribal rhythms, and acid. The rate at which ambient music has grown. Dance music being done well 'live' without DAT e.g. Megadog. More dance music appearing on CD. ------------------------------
