The anti-copyright collaborative project known as "The Droplift Project" was released last weekend. The album is a protest against the copyright restrictions on sampling, along with the music industry in general. Through the prank of dropping our independently produced disc of "infringing material" directly into the bins of record stores across the planet, we hope to raise awareness of fair use issues in music, along with exposing some unsuspecting people to the wonderful world of audio collage and the art of the sample. Much more information, along with free downloads of the complete album in mp3 or full uncompressed format is available at the Droplift Project website : http://www.droplift.org Press release: WHAT IS THE DROPLIFT PROJECT? The idea came suddenly. Manufacture our own CDs, go into chain stores, and leave them in the appropriate bins. Down among the established pop hits and top 40 product, these CDs await those curious few who take them to the counter. Then what? Witness the confused faces of cashiers and customers alike when the CD does not show up in the inventory. But they'll most likely make the sale, and the CD known only as THE DROPLIFT PROJECT will go home with yet another customer. Mission accomplished. On the weekend of July 28th, 2000, all across the United States and Internationally, ordinary citizens will walk into record stores with copies of THE DROPLIFT PROJECT hidden on their person. They will proceed to leave them, well filed, in the stacks, and they will walk out. Why do this? Surely the artists know they won't get any MONEY from this puzzling act. Ah, but perhaps you are starting to understand already. The artists on THE DROPLIFT PROJECT make and find recordings of the stuff we all hear on radio, TV, in the news, on other CDs and tapes, and from everywhere around us. Then we cut it all up and rearrange it to make new art, social commentary, parody, and contemporary criticism. It's nothing new. Artists have been making collages for the last hundred years. The world of Fine Art has long recognized the artist's right to use found objects in a new context to make a comment. The world of music has been a little behind. Record companies reject our works outright, wishing to avoid unpleasant lawsuits. CD Plants, acting on an RIAA mandate to curb piracy, are often not willing to press material that might contain recognizable samples. Even free music venues on the Internet refuse to allow sample-based works. Is it illegal? Depends on who you ask. We know we are protected by the First Amendment and the Fair Use clause of the Copyright Act. Apparently, the music industry has other ideas. Because most of us do not posess the resources to defend our artistic rights in a court of law, we are often silenced by cease-and-desist letters and other legal threats. These tactics amount to censorship of an entire artform. This oppressive resistance to the creative reuse of material has really got us in a bind. Our only recourse was to manufacture and distribute this free public domain "copyright infringement compilation" that calls attention to this issue of sampling in music. So here it is! Listen to it! We're not doing this for our health. This is a deliberate attempt not only for our talents to be heard, but to encourage some discussion about artists' use of sound samples in their work. If you like the disc, spread the word! Write an article, play it on your radio show, make tapes for friends, and help us get it out there! You can also visit us on the internet at http://www.droplift.org ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: darkstep-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: darkstep-help@hyperreal.org From darkstep-return-536-archive-darkstep=hyperreal.org@hyperreal.org Wed Aug 02 10:15:10 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: archive-darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 28778 invoked by uid 250); 2 Aug 2000 10:15:09 -0000 Mailing-List: contact darkstep-help@hyperreal.org; run by ezmlm Precedence: bulk X-No-Archive: yes list-help: list-unsubscribe: list-post: Delivered-To: mailing list darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 28767 invoked from network); 2 Aug 2000 10:15:08 -0000 Message-ID: <20000802101439.81696.qmail@hotmail.com> X-Originating-IP: [213.1.11.162] From: "Re:Leaf \(DnB Producer\)" To: Date: Wed, 2 Aug 2000 11:11:34 +0100 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0032_01BFFC72.6B2632C0" X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2615.200 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2615.200 Subject: [darkstep] =?iso-8859-1?Q?Fw:_Messiah_Rising_=28dark=ACDNB@175bmp=29_B-side?= ------=_NextPart_000_0032_01BFFC72.6B2632C0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable I'm going to use this track 'fear and hate' as the b-side. Don't let what I'm about to say change your mind because I've been told by all the experts that if you do change your mind based on what I'm about to say, George W. Bush might win the election and I certainly couldn't live with myself if that connoisseur of pharmaceuticals (the kind you snort up your nose or the kind you inject on death row) won, in part, because of a letter I spit out over the Internet. So let's review -- you like Gore, you vote for Gore. He's a decent guy. I met him last year at some benefit, he came up to me, big hug -- whoa, this veep is no stiff, I thought -- and thanked me for this and that. He even quoted lines from "The Awful Truth" - whoa, scary, I thought, what's he doing watching cable channels above 40 on the box...not much to do on this veep gig, eh? I told him I admired what he did when he came home to America as a Vietnam Vet and spoke out against the war. That took a lot of courage, I said (his dad lost his Senate seat for being an early opponent of the war). So, if Al Gore is your man, go for it. In fact, I insist on it, even if you are just throwing your vote away. What I am about to say, though, is not intended for any Al Gore (or George W.) voters. If you are one, please click off now. To Whom It May Concern: I address this letter to the largest political party in the United States - the 55% of you in the voting public who are so disillusioned with politics and politicians, so sick and tired of all the broken promises, so disgusted with all the b.s. that you have absolutely no intention of voting in November. You know who you are. AND YOU ARE THE MAJORITY! You rule. You are the Non-Voters, all 100 million of you! Until now, you have been the subject of scorn and ridicule. You've been called apathetic, lazy, ignorant. Your actions have been viewed as unAmerican (I mean, what kind of citizen in the World's Greatest Democracy would not exercise his or her most important and cherished right - the right to freely choose your leader!). Well, may I be the first to tell you that, not only are you NOT stupid and apathetic, I believe you are smarter than all the rest of us combined. YOU figured it out. YOU uncovered the scam. And YOU had the guts to no longer participate in a lie. Way to go! In 1996, you helped set the all-time American record for lowest turnout ever at a presidential election. The reason you, the majority, no longer vote in America is because you, the majority, realize there is no real choice on the ballot. The "two" parties both do the bidding of the wealthy and agree with each other on 90% of the issues. They take 90% of their money from people who make over a hundred-grand a year, and then enact over 90% of the laws those contributors want passed. On the ballot this November, you already know there is no contest. The independent Cook Political Report in D.C. last week announced that, out of 435 House seats up for election in November, there are only 47 seats where there is a "true race" between opponents - and, of those, only 14 seats have a race that is even "close" between the two candidates. 14 out of 435! "Ninety-seven to ninety-nine percent of incumbents running for re-election will be returned to Congress in November," according to the Cook Report. The Non-Voters already understand this. And they are not going to waste one iota of their day on November 7 driving to some smelly elementary school gymnasium to participate in a Soviet-style election with no friggin' choice on the ballot. So, to you brave voter-resisters, I say congratulations on your act of civic disobedience! I joined you this primary season and refused to go along with this charade of "choice." Nearly 80% of those of us of voting age - over 160 million Americans - staged a sit-in on our living room couches during this year's primaries. THAT is the great untold story of this election year. How much longer will the punditocracy be able to get away with dismissing this massive no-show as "a sign Americans are content with the booming economy?" Now that we have made our presence known (you all don't mind me speaking for us, do you? Good. In fact, I'll just assume the currently-vacant mantle of this majority party and serve as your leader until you say otherwise...), it is time to find a way that says, loudly and clearly, just how mad as hell we are and how we are not going to take it anymore. We need to find a way where our vote screams "None of the Above!" A chance to act, like that Chinese guy in Tieneman Square, standing in front of a moving tank and stopping it in its path. In November, we should find a way to follow in the footsteps of those intelligent Minnesotans who, even thought they could care less about professional wrestling (and even less, I'm sure, for Jesse "The Body"), proved to the world that they not only have a sense of humor, but they know how to stick it to the whole bloody system. Think of just how high their level of anger must have been against the One-Party-With-Two-Heads monopoly! I mean, state government is no joke - somebody's gotta build the roads, run the schools, catch the criminals. You don't want to turn the asylum over to the chief lunatic but, damn it, that's what the people of Minnesota did - just to send a message! Wow. That took some guts. So, for those of you who weren't going to vote anyway, well...what if you actually did? What if you drove down to that stinky gym where the little shell game behind the pretend curtains is taking place ("Pay no attention to the voters behind the curtains!"), walk in, sign in, take the ballot they hand you, and toss yourselves inside the booth like a political molotov cocktail. Boom! "You wanna tell me there's a choice here between two guys who both support NAFTA, WTO, the death penalty, the Cuban embargo, increased Pentagon spending, sleazy HMOs, greedy hospital chains, 250 million guns in our homes, more bombing of Iraq, the rich getting richer and the rest of us declaring bankruptcy?" Boom! Not me. Boom! I'm voting for Ralph Nader. KAAAABOOM! Friends, we are losing our democratic control over our country. We may have already lost it. I hope not. But in the last 20 years of the Reagan administration, Corporate America has merged and morphed itself to such an extent that just a handful of companies now call all the shots. They own Congress. They own us. In order to work for them, we have to take urine tests and lie detectors and wear bar codes on chains around our necks. In order to keep our jobs we have had to give up decent health care, the 8-hour day (and time with our kids), the security that we'll even have a job next year, and any unwillingness we may have to compete with a 14-year old Indonesian girl who gets a dollar a day. And how frightening (and great) is it that the last place we can freely try to inform and communicate with each other is on this very Web? Six companies run by six men control the majority of the news we now get from newspapers, television, radio and the Internet. One out of every two books is bought at a bookstore owned by one of only two companies. Is it safe in a "free society" to have the sources of our information and mass communication in the hands of just a few wealthy men who have a VESTED interest in keeping us as stupid as possible - or at least in keeping us thinking like them so that we vote for THEIR candidates? I fear the cement on this new oligarchy of power is quickly drying, and when it is finished hardening, we are finished. The democracy, the one that's supposed to be of, by, and for the people, will cease to exist. We must not let this happen, no matter how cynical and disgusted we've become at the whole electoral process. Ralph Nader, to me, represents a chance for us to at least temporarily stop the cement from drying. We need him in there kicking things up, stirring the pot and forcing a real debate about the issues. Whether it's Ralph as Candidate or Ralph as President, he may represent our last hope to get our country back from the clutches of the powerful few. I am not writing these words lightly. I am hoping to sound a siren and rally the majority who, for good reason, have given up - but might just have it in them to find the will for one last fight against the bastards. Can Ralph win? Well, stranger things have happened in the past decade. C'mon, think about it, not a single one of us ever thought we'd see the Berlin Wall come down or Nelson Mandela as President of South Africa. After those two things happened, I joined a new school of thought that said ANYTHING was possible. Jesse Ventura started with 3% in the polls and won. Ross Perot in '92 started with 6% and, after proving to everyone that he was certifiably insane, still got nearly 20% of the vote. Ralph already has between 7% and 10% in the polls - before he's done any serious campaigning. He's gone from 3% to 8% in my home state of Michigan. These are amazing numbers and the pundits and lobbyists and Republicrats are running scared. Hey, you like to watch scared Republicrats running? Tell a pollster you're voting for Ralph. Now, look, before you all send me a lot of mail about how weird Ralph is 'cause he doesn't own a car or is a "sell-out" 'cause he's got a few million dollars, let me say this: I used to work out of his office, and Ralph is definitely one of a kind. In a future letter I will write of those experiences but, for now, let's just agree that Ralph is at least half as crazy as Jesse Ventura - and about a hundred times as smart. I'd say he's also saved about a million or so lives, thanks to the consumer and environmental legislation he has devoted his life to. And between Gore, Bush, and himself, he's the only person running who would guarantee universal health care for all, the only candidate who would raise the minimum wage to a decent level, the only one who would get up each morning asking himself the question, "What can I do today to serve all the people of this country?" The list goes on and on. You can read more about what Ralph stands for by going to his website (http://www.votenader.org). You'll agree, I'm sure, there's lots of common sense there, regardless of what political stripe you are. But remember. If you are even THINKING of voting for Al Gore, vote for Al Gore. Ralph Nader does not need a single Gore vote. There are a hundred million of us out there who are uncommitted and currently not voting. Right now, Gore and Bush are each hoping to win by getting only 40 million votes. If you are in the Non-Voting majority and want to let 'em all have it, if you want to get our country back in our hands...well, if even half of you show up and vote November 7 then you won't be held responsible for Bush winning the White House. In fact, you won't be held responsible for putting Gore in the White House, either. Rather, you will have made history by putting a true American hero at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. And you will have given every company, every boss who's done ya wrong, the worst nightmare of their lives. November 7. Payback Time. The revenge of the Non-Voters! So sayeth their unappointed leader, yours truly, Michael Moore mmflint@aol.com http://www.theawfultruth.com http://www.michaelmoore.com PS. Come to think of it, Democrats should be on their knees thanking Ralph for running. Rather than taking votes from Gore, Ralph's going to be the one responsible for turning the House back over to the Democrats. When millions of these Non-Voters enter that booth to vote for Ralph, and they come across their local race for Congress, they will find no Green Party candidate in most of the 435 Congressional districts. So who do you think Ralph's army of Non-Voters will plunk down for Congress? The Republican? I don't think so. The Democrats are only six seats short of regaining control of the House. Ralph Nader will be the reason the Democrats get the House back for the first time since Newt's Contract on America in 1994. Democrats should send their checks to Nader 2000, P.O. Box 18002, Washington, DC 20035. (Or, better yet, let's try to elect enough Greens to Congress -- a dozen or so -- and they'll hold the deciding votes because neither the Democrats nor the Republicans will have the majority. It'll be a friggin' Knesset!) PPS. If you're still worried this letter might convince a weak-kneed Gore voter to flip over to Nader - and thus lead to President George W. stacking the Supreme Court to make abortion illegal, well, it's all a bunch of hooey. Please read my latest grassroots.com column entitled, "I Ain't Fallin for That One Again" at: http://www.michaelmoore.com/aint.html PPPS. Tonight, Wednesday July 19, on "The Awful Truth" (Bravo, 10 p.m. ET/PT), Crackers the Corporate Crime Fighting Chicken makes a surprise return visit. Don't miss it! PLEASE PASS THIS LETTER ON TO YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY. PERMISSION IS GRANTED TO REPRINT ANYWHERE. >Ain't Fallin' For That One Again >Michael Moore >Release: Tuesday, July 18, 2000 > >I think the first time I remember hearing this political urban >myth was in the 1976 presidential election. Somebody told >me the reason I had to vote for Jimmy Carter was because >if Gerald Ford was elected, women would lose their right >to chose to have an abortion. Abortion had been legal for >only three years at that point. It was considered a great victory, one we all wanted to support. > >So, I voted for Jimmy Carter -- and guess what? One of the things he did was to stop all abortions provided for women or wives in the armed services! He also stopped any further funding to birth control groups overseas that offered abortion as an alternative. And he ended all Medicaid payments for poor women in need of an abortion. > >I felt a bit abused. I mean, Gerry Ford had been pro-choice. His wife was an ardent supporter of women's rights. And it was a Nixon appointee to the Supreme Court -- Justice Blackmun -- that wrote the majority opinion making >abortion legal. What was I thinking? (Other than that the Nixon Nightmare years had to come to an end! That, I correctly rationalized, was worth the vote for Carter.) > >Four years later, Democrats and liberals were going nuts over the possibility that Ronald Reagan might unseat Carter. Dire warnings were issued to all: If Reagan gets in, abortion will be illegal, period. > >Well, I didn't vote for Reagan OR Carter, Reagan got in, and then something >strange happened: Abortion remained legal! Sure, Reagan built on Carter's >abortion restrictions, but Roe v. Wade was still the law of the land when the >Gipper rode off into the sunset eight years later. > >Yet Reagan had appointed plenty of wingnuts to the Supreme Court, so when the >doomsayers in 1988 warned that George Bush would CERTAINLY send women >back to the alleys to have illegal abortions, another bizarre thing happened -- Bush >got elected, and ... four years later ... ABORTION WAS STILL LEGAL! > >But Bush did leave us with Clarence Thomas, so when the Democrats came to >scare the bejeepers out of me with what Bush would do to a woman's right to >choose if he got a second term, I decided to vote for Bill Clinton. > >So what's happened under our first feminist-man president? > >Perhaps Clinton misunderstood his mission: he was supposed to support a >woman's right to choose, not his right to choose women. Roe v. Wade is still on >the books (mainly because of the consistent and unwavering support from the Reagan-appointed Justice O'Connor, the Ford-appointed Justice Stevens, and the Bush-appointed Justice Souter! They have voted to uphold abortion rights every single time). But it is now twice as hard for a woman in America to obtain an abortion as it was when Clinton took office. The anti-abortion terrorists have been so successful in their campaign of violence against abortion clinics and doctors and hospitals who perform abortions that a woman can now get an abortion in only 14% of the counties in the United States. That's right Terrorism has scored its first victory on U.S. soil by assassinating enough doctors and firebombing enough clinics so that no one wants to perform an abortion. So if you live in one of the 86% of counties where not a single doctor will do an abortion, let me ask you this: what good is a "right" to an abortion if you can't get one? > >The stunning thing about this virtual elimination of abortion in America is that it has >occurred at a time when nearly 70% of the country supports some form of legal >abortion. The terrorists have literally gotten away with murder -- with a pro-choice attorney general sitting in Washington, D.C., doing damn little about it. About the only reason I voted for these clowns was because of this issue -- and where the hell have they been? > >Which brings us to Ralph Nader. Vice President Al Gore, on Meet the Press this week, told Tim Russert WHAT WOULD HAPPEN if George W. were elected >president. Women would lose their right to have an abortion, Gore >bellowed, with no equivocation and no hint of shame for what has happened on the Clinton/Gore watch. > >All the pundits -- and the Democrats -- tell us that a vote for Nader is a >vote for Bush because all Ralph will end up doing is siphoning off votes that would have gone to Gore. This is their mantra: > >"IF BUSH IS ELECTED, HE WILL APPOINT JUSTICES TO THE >SUPREME COURT AND THEY WILL DECLARE ABORTION ILLEGAL!" > >Well, I've fallen for this before and I ain't fallin' for it again. In fact, I will go so far as to say that George W. Bush, if for some reason he is magically elected, will NEVER do ANYTHING to make abortion illegal. > >Here's my proof: > >1. To recap what I have already stated: Roe v. Wade was written by a Republican, and upheld for 27 years by Republicans. No Republican president has made abortion illegal, and none will this time around. > >2. George W. is, first and only, a politician. For crying out loud, if 70% >of the country favors legal abortion, trust me, that party boy is NEVER going to cook hisgoose on this issue. He is already moving to the center on abortion and has been doing so since the primaries. He wants to win. He already has the majority of women supporting him in the polls, in part because a lot of women are confident he will not upset this apple cart. > >3. The New York Times two weeks ago did a study of Bush's court appointees in >Texas and found that he did NOT appoint right-wing crazies, but rather >moderates or moderate conservatives who have upheld legal abortion in Texas and struck down some cases that tried to put restrictions on a woman's right to choose. > >4. Sometimes even conservatives end up accepting that the tide has turned against them. The most stunning example of this came last month when >ultra-conservative Chief Justice William Rehnquist insisted on writing the MAJORITY opinion for the court upholding the Miranda ruling that requires the police to inform an arrestee of his or her constitutional rights. Now, you know a guy like Rehnquist personally just hates forcing the police to read someone their rights. But in his decision keeping Miranda the law of the land, Rehnquist wrote that the Miranda rights are now "part of the American culture" and therefore should not be done away with. Even pro-Miranda liberals had never heard that line used by the Supreme Court in backing a decision, but it was, in essence, the truth. Reading someone their rights is now like apple pie -- and so is a woman's right to chose what to do if she should become pregnant. The overwhelming majority of Americans believe it a decision best left with a woman, her doctor, her God -- and it's nobody else's dang >business. That, too, is part of the American culture. It's called privacy, and it's been >around for over 200 years. Nobody, regardless of their political stripe, wants the >politicians or the justices in their bedroom. > >So, this year, I'm not going to let the fearmongers scare me into voting against my >conscience. And I'm not going to let the Democratic candidate for president >cynically use this issue when he himself has served in D.C. for 8 years >allowing the right to get an abortion to be whittled away to near nothing. > >Plus, I believe the true Nader constituency out there is among the 100 million nonvoters who have given up, thinking they no longer have a say in what really goes on in Washington. Gore shouldn't worry about Ralph taking votes from him. Rather he should think about what his administration with Bill Clinton has taken away from the women of this nation. > >Come November 7, I plan to enter the voting booth and vote not from fear, but from a desire to see this country returned to the people. > More by > Michael Moore > > 07/18/00 ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: darkstep-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: darkstep-help@hyperreal.org From darkstep-return-547-archive-darkstep=hyperreal.org@hyperreal.org Sun Aug 06 04:35:49 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: archive-darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 29744 invoked by uid 250); 6 Aug 2000 04:35:49 -0000 Mailing-List: contact darkstep-help@hyperreal.org; run by ezmlm Precedence: bulk X-No-Archive: yes list-help: list-unsubscribe: list-post: Delivered-To: mailing list darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 29733 invoked from network); 6 Aug 2000 04:35:48 -0000 From: BreakNoize@aol.com Message-ID: <90.7f47d31.26be4505@aol.com> Date: Sun, 6 Aug 2000 00:35:17 EDT To: darkstep@hyperreal.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 5.0 for Windows sub 119 Subject: [darkstep] paging ako hey ako e-mail me when you get the chance. i'm gonna send you out a copy of my new tape. -baseck --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: darkstep-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: darkstep-help@hyperreal.org From darkstep-return-548-archive-darkstep=hyperreal.org@hyperreal.org Sun Aug 06 05:59:33 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: archive-darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 18438 invoked by uid 250); 6 Aug 2000 05:59:28 -0000 Mailing-List: contact darkstep-help@hyperreal.org; run by ezmlm Precedence: bulk X-No-Archive: yes list-help: list-unsubscribe: list-post: Delivered-To: mailing list darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 18405 invoked from network); 6 Aug 2000 05:59:24 -0000 X-Originating-IP: [216.225.23.69] From: "D.J. Maybe some stupid phrase like "Insanity was fucking Insane"... Or as the banner at the party said, "Fucking Hardcore & Hardcore Fucking"!! The life of 'Skinner' is a miserable one. Its rare I enjoy myself even when doing the things I like. Many times I hold in my emotions, as I have no need to express myself. Well this party actually made me smile a few times, because it was fun as hell. There where Great people and Unbelievable music. This party was all around wonderful. So its Friday afternoon and I meet Bombardier in NYC to grab a good lunch and then head on over to the airport to catch our plan. After a long flight to Winnipeg, only made enjoyable by Bombardier and I creating the CLA (Canadian liberation army's) plot to over take our airplane, out loud to freak out the people sitting near us. So we get to customs, and they decide to give me an Anal Fist fuck to get into the country. After having to pay some absurd Fee (which I got back from the promoters) I got into Canada after 1.5 hours of Bullshit. So we head on over to this local club Opium, and Fishead is in their tearing shit up. I went on a few minutes after him and threw down a few toons. After this we got some food and I got to experience the Winnipeg Post Nightlife. Then off to fisheads to sleep and watch fight club (great movie!) The next day and its off to the party. Nice location. So while the sound is being set up, the Blowup sheep and doll were brought out. Let the fun begin! So the night starts off. First few sets were good, I didn't hear to much as I was getting situated with the place, the people and all. Zyklon-D, even though speedcore is not my thing, played a great set, as did one of the Party's Promoters MonkeyMan! Then some Local went on with a D&B Set that didn't impress me one bit. The first few tracks he started with where some nice dark rollers, but after that he lost me, so I went to the "VIP" like room and talked to the cannucks. Fanny was on, and he played some very interesting and creative music. He started with this evil like booty house to get the kids dancing then it just mutated into sick broken beat terra. Fanny is not new to the world; those of you who were into punk will know him as one of the guitarists from Exploited. Now it was time for Bombardier to go on. All I can say is FUCKING AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a lot of his toons, but his live PA blew me away. Mixing the songs together to make the set nonstop, using tons of effects to create a new feeling of the music and to make the mixes even more energetic. He was definitely my favorite set of the night. I was bopping my head the whole time, and even let out a nice little grin. Especially when some of the glow stick ravers ran away! Then Fishead came on. Once again going nuts on the records. Fishead is one DJ that should be booked 10X more then he is. One of the best hardcore DJ's out there. Why? Because he can mix, and he is not boring. Beat juggling to absurd random fucking tracks, EQ Tricks the whole shebang. His skills do make me jealous sometimes. Then Mr. AbelCain was up to do his show. This is another producer who out does himself. One of the best Darkstep/Breakcore/Abstract producers out there. Every toon was intense, dark, intelligent, and aggressive. I only got to hear 50% of his performance, as I wanted to hide to rest my ears before I went on. But for the 30 minutes I was there. I didn't want to leave, I was just pumping my fist and letting out a grin, because it was the 5th hour in a row I am hearing top quality dark sick music! Then I cam on, Playing some of my usually shit. Mixture of Doomcore and Noisey Darkstep. I don't have much to comment on this, as I couldn't hear my own set, so for those who went, I would love to read some reviews. After me can Venations Snares. This kid has made some of the best songs I have heart in a while. But his MP3's can't even compare. The performances of his music live, and being mixed was 10X better then the cds and music he has sent me in the past. He rocks Live. Winnipeg is lucky to have him, because I wouldn't have a problem hearing him out every week. Tons of new and old tracks, mixed real-time and really good. Another performer who should get more credit for what he does. So after the party I spent a few hours hanging out at Fanny's house talking, and checking out his gear. Then it was time to get on the plane. Got home and went to sleep. My only complaint was the few groupie chicks there went after the others; they were scared of the 6'7" militantly dressed skinner :(. Even the jailbait girl who jumped from one DJ to the other was scared of me. Hehe, the joys of being 'skinner' Over all I had fun, great music, die hard fans. Honest and straight forward promoters, great friends. The promoters didn't make any money, since hardcore is hard to find support for these days, so myself and all the other headliners told them to not pay us other then any fees or costs that it took us to get there. So we spun just for travel and airfare. I had too much fun to care, and they were way cool that I didn't want to take there $. Shout outs to the American crew that drove up from Fargo and places to check everyone out, you people are truly hardcore! Respect to all the lovely and nice Canadians I got to chat with while up there. It was defiantly a pleasure to visit. -- Skinner http://skinner.org http://gabber.org mailto:skinner@skinner.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: darkstep-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: darkstep-help@hyperreal.org From darkstep-return-554-archive-darkstep=hyperreal.org@hyperreal.org Tue Aug 08 02:05:16 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: archive-darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 17948 invoked by uid 250); 8 Aug 2000 02:05:13 -0000 Mailing-List: contact darkstep-help@hyperreal.org; run by ezmlm Precedence: bulk X-No-Archive: yes list-help: list-unsubscribe: list-post: Delivered-To: mailing list darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 17906 invoked from network); 8 Aug 2000 02:05:11 -0000 Message-ID: <398F3D51.A0BDFCDD@mail.execpc.com> Date: Mon, 07 Aug 2000 17:50:57 -0500 From: Nicholas Christ X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.7 [en] (Win98; U) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: mw-raves@hyperreal.org, darkstep@hyperreal.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: [darkstep] Fuck Big Raves [Sept 23rd, 2000] Typed up from the flyer... Just because a label is putting out records left and right doesn't make it any good. Formation stuff really doesn't run with my usual tastes, though, so I'm biased. I really didn't like either of the two big EPs that just came out. It seems like the both of them really only had two good tracks IMO. Jigsaw had Jigsaw & Camoflauge, Konflict had Celestial and the Beckoning rmx (which really isnt all that good imo). but the stuff sells so hey - maybe it'll grow on me as I hear it played out by every Jungle dj and his kid sister. This week I picked up a bunch of older stuff along with a few new ones.. ---Jonny L - Cut Off/Move Upon Cut Off is my favorite on this one. Both were a little ahead of their time, I think. --Various - Unicron EP (Architecture) This shit was pretty dope as well. I think my favorite track is Syndicate Zone. It's got a dope electro vibe that reminds me of Rymetime's Teknoid. I'm really digging this "new" sound in jungle. --Outfit - Serum/New York I don't even have to give an opinion on this. --Alpha Omega - Jah Step/Realism 2000 Dope dope dope dope dope. Realism rmx with the raw old school hardcore 1992 cheezy synths, Jah Step with the skrate funk. Well worth the flow. --Absolute Zero+The Subphonics - Fugitive/The Code Fugitive fucking sucks. --cause 4 concern - Show U Something/4 Ever Not nearly as tech as the last few, this is still pretty fly. Steel drums and congos put it on the chill tip. Definitely reminiscent of Kemal - Submerge or exocet - freestyle. What else is everyone out there picking up? I'm curious to see what the rest of the darksteppas are filling their crates with. I picked up 1kohm (quoit v. su8m3rg3d) a little while back. I'm wondering what you all think of it and how it comapres to 2kohm, as i have yet to pick it up. ez RDC [ninthwonder soundsystem/sourmp3/fljm] +---------------------------------------------------------+ +Robert Capasso + + + +Programming/Technical Services Assistant + + + +The Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies + +Florida State University + +2035 E. here are my recent fave licks on the street (stuff thats not promo or dub or whatever):

"void" / (and the other tune) - phantom audio - timeless
"lust" - total science - renegade hardware
total science lp (for the "champion sound" rmx and "nine numbers") on CIA recs
"ease up "/ "3 step" - abstract - green
unicron ep (for "lime") - architecture
mealstrom ep (for "celestial") - konflict - renegade hardware? it think thats correct

not necessarily dark but i like these.

NB 003 - ??? white label - im assuming this is on the NX beat label. its got 2 nice thumping toons, once with very nice echoed ravey sounds. a great dancefloor toon, no more, no less. pieter k - pendulum - higher education - well, i love pieter's stuff, so im biased. but this toon is rough as fuck. and the digital and spirit remix is badass also. this label is pretty consistant as far as putting out original sounding stuff. kosheen - catch/demonstrate - moksha white label - damn, i love kosheen. the catch "floor mix" is a little minimal roller, while the flip has got quite a dope intro. total science - facts of life/lust - hardleaders - a little more dancefloor oriented than their most recent releases, this 12" rocks hard. theyre some dancefloor toons i wouldnt feel toolish for playing. omni trio - nubirth/breakbeat etiquitte - movin shadow - some fairly typical (but not in a bad way) omni trio toons, both with little female vocal parts. very nice and relaxing summer music. dj abstract - ease up/3 step - green label - i thought i was getting kind of sick of the san fran sound, seeing as it hasnt progressed quite like i thought it would. the a side of this one is kind of typical san fran fare, with the distinctive bass tone and rough breaks. but the flip is very very dope. nice chopped up breaks, a good bounce, and a distinctive beat make it a fucking quality dancefloor toon. v/a - kila bites part 2 - movin shadow - another triple pack meant to push some of the lesser known names on the shadow roster. the obvious toons on here are rymetyme's judgement day and dom and roland's thunder remix. the other toons are all by relatively unknown (at least to me) people. theres some good toons, and some weak toons, but all are aimed at the dancefloor with minimal cheesiness. its worth the $$$, definitely. dara - posession/duplicity (klute remix) - breakbeat science - this one is all about the klute remix. i like it alot, its very clean, and not too bassy. it definitely doesnt sound like your typical drum and bass toon. but its not really far out there like some klute stuff can be. i dunno why, but i really dig it. now, on to the hardcore...... stuntrock - this is stuntrock volume one 'in memory of bob segar' - self released - if you know about stuntrock, then you will be down. if you dont know, then get to know. this cd is really fucked up. youve gotta love this man. its got the richard pryor track from addict 2 on it and the satan track from addict 4, in addition to 14 other songs with offensive titles. this is music that kids scare their parents with. i love this cd. all hail stuntrock. V/A - kaen bin CD - suburban trash industries - this is a very fucking good cd. i dont even know how to classify it musically. tracks range from grating ambience to mashed breaks, to a but up hiphop track. just buy it. i still wanna get the 12" version since there are all different tracks on it. dj scud - kill or be killed - full watts 7" - oh my. this is the toon of the fucking year as far as im concerned. a fucking dancehall 45 that has got some good dark atmospherics, rudebwoy and bumbaclaat samples, and a fucking HARD HARD HARD dancehall groove with some more rudey chat overtop. then it breaks down, and comes back in with the torn up amens. i fucking got 2 copies of this record. just go fucking buy it!!!!!!!! enzym - megaabgefahrenespacesonds ep 12" - suburban trash industries - once again, i dont really know how to clssify this. its mainly some bleepy breaks, with a bit of a harshness to them. its not exactly hardcore, but i guess it fits in there somehow. i dont know, but i love it. i really need to check out all the other STI stuff. im in love with this label. 13th hour/bombardier - possess, sxe/ sickness, unchosen - dyslexic response - 13th hour is bombardier and abelcain/davros together, and they make some nice noisey stuff with some cut up beats on the first track, and some howling noise on the second track. then on the flip, bombardier fucks shit up with his harsh grinding breakbeat hardcore. fuck yeah. if you like these guys, youll like this 12". V/A - addict 003 - addict - some stuff on here by people i dont actually know. EULB's track is very good, as is the pressboard track. tracks by doormouse and stuntrock make this a must own, and then theres some weird tracks by "j-slim". huh. just buy it. fanny - stimulant jungle sweet - opus 1 - self released CDR - some crazy shit on here from a former member of the exploited. some porn samples rule the disc, with all sorts of broken beats. some definitely sick shit. more stuff to make mom and dad angry by listening to. abelcain - dont know the name, its a CDR he gave me - just wonderful stuff. the midwest really rules hardcore IMO, and abelcain is a master of what he does. venetian snares - shiver in eternal darkness CD - more stuff from the man like venetian snares. not only is he a great producer, but hes a good guy. this is all good stuff on here, dark, warped, cut up beats. JUST GO BUY IT, OKAY!!?!?!?!?!?!?!??! youre a dork if you read all the way down this far.... tmo -- "They're housewives and they're hackers," Hedgepath said. "I don't care if they have kids. MERZBOW
Merzbox=20
XLTD003BX (50 X CD Box Set)=20

Thirty reissues from LP, CD and Tape.  = Twenty=20 previously unreleased albums.=20

* MERZDISCS - Fifty CDs providing as many hours = of=20 MERZBOW Noise
music.  The = collection spans=20 from 1979 to 1997, 18 years of sonic
decomposition.  Many of the titles were only = available as=20 cassettes and
have long since been = deleted. =20 Five LPs and a CD, which were originally
released=20 in limited numbers and have since been deleted, are now reissued=20
in the MERZBOX.  Also included are 20 = releases that=20 have previously never
been = released.  All=20 CDs have four colour CD labels, featuring new MERZBOW
artwork.  All CDs are exclusive to the = MERZBOX.=20

* MERZBOOK - Music author Brett Woodward has = written the=20 biography of
MERZBOW and how Masami = Akita came to=20 do what he does and why he continues
to = explore=20 the realms of Noise music with such vigour.  Various = musicians=20
and devotees of MERZBOW, Achim Wollscheid, Jim = O'Rourke=20 and Damion Romero,
have written about = their=20 favourite noise musician.  Techno-theorist Eugene
Thacker provides a text on the relationship between = MERZBOW=20 and
eroticism.  Jonathan Walker = contributes=20 to the book with a written piece
once = included=20 with the "Collaborative LP".  Each album in the MERZBOX is =
reviewed by writer Brett Woodward and Masami Akita = provides=20 explanatory
liner notes.  All of = this in a=20 full colour book with over 100 pages and
illustrations.=20

* MERZROM - An interactive multimedia CD-ROM = designed by=20 Troy Innocent.  It
includes = additional=20 images, music and video footage that provide a kinetic
document of MERZBOW.  The MERZROM is both a = document and a=20 chaotic device
that provides a parallel = to the=20 music of MERZBOW.  The CD-ROM is both MAC
and PC compatible.=20

* MERZDALLION - Jeweller Marcus Davidson = reinterprets=20 primitive MERZBOW
collage artwork on = this=20 commemorative medallion.  The bronze medallion is
two-sided and cryovac packed.=20

* MERZSHIRT - A T-shirt  featuring the = artwork that=20 MERZBOW has become
infamous for.  = The black=20 T-shirt is large, long sleeve and made from 100%
cotton.=20

* MERZCARDS - A series of postcards that = capture the mail=20 art aesthetic
that was critical to the = early=20 years of MERZBOW.=20

* MERZSTICKERS - Two stickers with all new = MERZBOW full=20 colour artwork.=20

* MERZPOSTER - A large gloss poster that gives = meaning to=20 the term "lowest
arts".=20

* MERZCASE - A 'fetish-rubber' case = manufactured=20 specifically to contain
all of the CDs, = MERZROM,=20 MERZDALLION, MERZCARDS and MERZSTICKERS.  The
MERZCASE allows for complete portability of the = CDs.=20

* MERZPACK - A custom designed hand made box to = house all=20 of the
collection.  It is complete = with a=20 photo etched metal name plate on the
spine of the=20 box.=20

The attention to detail and design that is = inherent with=20 the MERZBOX can be
attributed to the = outstanding=20 work of Extreme's own Art Director, Doriana
Corda.  It is something that needs to be = experienced as much=20 as listened to.=20

If he has been using the name longer and is going to release stuff and all that, then of course he is going to want to be the only one, and I kinda understand where he's coming from. Then again, there are tons of DJs out there with the same name that are doing just fine.. for example.. there are like three DJs named Ruckus in Toronto........ Of course his point is also negated that neither me nor anyone else seems to have ever heard of him =). Plus he probably spins like two-step or something and you're far different from that. Just tell him to go spend the money on a copyright instead of spending the time on that email. =) vancouver massif! iLL-eShA ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: darkstep-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: darkstep-help@hyperreal.org From darkstep-return-589-archive-darkstep=hyperreal.org@hyperreal.org Mon Aug 28 07:34:45 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: archive-darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 23133 invoked by uid 250); 28 Aug 2000 07:34:45 -0000 Mailing-List: contact darkstep-help@hyperreal.org; run by ezmlm Precedence: bulk X-No-Archive: yes list-help: list-unsubscribe: list-post: Delivered-To: mailing list darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 23123 invoked from network); 28 Aug 2000 07:34:44 -0000 Message-ID: <39AA1689.20BE923F@andythepooh.com> Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 03:36:41 -0400 From: "Thomas D. Natural Mystic - "Cyberdub" - Function (yes, its getting a little old. can i get enough of it? no. ) 9. TeeBee - "Human Reptile" - Subtitles (a straight up dancefloor toon for the dog days of summer. ) 8. J. Davis - "Your Name (Parallax Remix)" - Cosmic Flux (nice jazzy cutup break. good feelings all around. ) 7. ?????? - "Sketches (Nuclear Fusion Dub Mix)" - Bear Necessities (smooth male r+b vocal over the old school break and subbass. laying down some summertime vibes.... ) 6. Poseidon - "Tensions of the Sea" - Looking Good (awesome epic sounding toon, with all the feeling of a hurricane. and for hurricane season, nothing can match it's fury. ) 5. Divine Styler - "Directrix (Optical Remix)" - Mo' Wax (Optical is really at the top of his game on this remix. a little bit of the original vocal in the intro, and warm big bass throughout. sweet. ) 4. John B. - "Imagine (Remix)" - Beta (this might be cheesy to some, but i think theyre stupid. this is a fantastic journey into the music, with a full vocal. ) 3. Roni Size - "Breaks" (i think) - Full Cycle (Some melody in the bassline along with the typical Full Cycle spacey-ness. a summertime roller of the highest calibre. ) 2. Psyne - "Sly Detector" - Earth (another epic atmospheric toon, capturing the feeling of summer's escaping beauty. ) 1. Omni Trio - "Nu Birth" - Moving Shadow (i listen to this record about 5 times a day. this is a PERFECT summertime song. a hint of some jazzyness in the intro, along with some forlorn synth washes leads into a beautiful melodic bassline with a female vocal loop. very sublime. ) tom -- "Getting in trouble is all relative to your own expectations." - Me --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: darkstep-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: darkstep-help@hyperreal.org From darkstep-return-590-archive-darkstep=hyperreal.org@hyperreal.org Mon Aug 28 15:37:15 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: archive-darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 13888 invoked by uid 250); 28 Aug 2000 15:37:14 -0000 Mailing-List: contact darkstep-help@hyperreal.org; run by ezmlm Precedence: bulk X-No-Archive: yes list-help: list-unsubscribe: list-post: Delivered-To: mailing list darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 13878 invoked from network); 28 Aug 2000 15:37:12 -0000 Message-ID: <8BADBC1AFA8AD311ABAC00508B44DF5B02BF11DA@icast02.icast.com> From: "Davis, John" To: "'darkstep@hyperreal.org'" Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 11:37:10 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2650.21) Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Subject: [darkstep] Aphrodite Hi, I just subscribed to hte list to let you know that my company www.icast.com is featuring a live webcast of Aphrodite live from Londons Nottinghill Carnival tonight @ 7pm EST We are giving away lots of prizes during the day in our electronic music chatroom including.... It's simple, yet brutal with some sinister mechanzied drums and hi-hats kicking in at about 32 beats in making it sound wonderfully chaotic Karl K - Synpase (Konflict rmx) -Killer bass on this one, I happen to like the new 'clubby' sound that some of the techstep has been growing into lately.. Mad Max - Skatterbrained -Oh my gosh! SanFran sounding synth work with a kickass amen breakdown in the middle. Loxy & Ink - Quasimodo -The vampire killa. Nuff Said. )EIB( & Trace - Flashback -It's fashionable to hate BC now, but this track is bomb shit. Got pulled on this one and even saw some lighters. The piano intro is ill shit. Dom & Roland - Thunder (rmx) -I don't like this as much as the original, but the break in the middle is nice and worked as a cooldown. The synthline in this is great. Quoit v. Su8m3rg3d - Everything You Do Is Wrong -Nasty rolling bass, crunchy breaks and children screaming. Why haven't you picked up a copy yet? Future Cut - Whiplash -Played out to all hell. The last time someone played it up here was when Dara came like 6 months ago. The devil made me to do it. Genotype - Square Waves -Mad old, but still twice as rugged as most of the garbage that the current crop of artists have been putting out. Distorted Minds - Snuff Baby -I love the congo drums and the nasty distorted synths. Serious bizness from these guys. Slither was awesome as well. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on these two.. Usual Suspects - Spawn/Holepunch (Konflict rmx) -Filthy, dirty and nasty shit. Lots of fun to mix with. B.L.I.M. - Filterzon -Another old track that just never got as much play as I thought it should have. It breaks at the end into some candy-sounding trancey synth work. It was a nice dichotomy with the next track. Absolute Zero+The Subphonics - The Code (Usual Suspects rmx) -Massive amen biz. This track will be in my playlist for a while to come. Decoder - Tag -I think my record was mislabeled. Even though the sticker says this tune is called "Turnover" I could swear the vocal sample says "Tag, tag" Either way it's some more yummy amen biz. Dom & Roland - Sky Spirits -Awesome chilled out tune here. Love the atmospherics and the vocal samples. Kemal - Submerged -I've got a thing for congo drums. This track is one of the illest I own. Another one that will be on my playlist for a long time to come. I've got a few records on order at the store this week so I'll have some more detailed reviews probably by Saturday afternoon. Got the Suspects EP, Technical Itch EP, and the two new Teebee tracks on the way. ez RDC[ninthwonder soundsystem/sourmp3/fljm] --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: darkstep-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: darkstep-help@hyperreal.org From darkstep-return-592-archive-darkstep=hyperreal.org@hyperreal.org Tue Aug 29 17:40:10 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: archive-darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 12013 invoked by uid 250); 29 Aug 2000 17:40:09 -0000 Mailing-List: contact darkstep-help@hyperreal.org; run by ezmlm Precedence: bulk X-No-Archive: yes list-help: list-unsubscribe: list-post: Delivered-To: mailing list darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 11975 invoked from network); 29 Aug 2000 17:40:08 -0000 Message-ID: <20000829174007.17284.qmail@web2901.mail.yahoo.com> Date: Tue, 29 Aug 2000 10:40:07 -0700 (PDT) From: rando To: junglist@us-jungle.com, darkstep@hyperreal.com MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Subject: [darkstep] rando [elements.PhuturisticBluez] :: 08|29|00 :: top ten 10:: Blue Sonix * this feeling * PhBluez 5 dub (avail on promo!) 09:: Miguel Q * regret * PhBluez 6 dub 08:: Total Science * concussion * PhBluez 7 dub 07:: Perfect Combination * let the mother roll * dub 06:: Photek * ? * photek promo 05:: Ryme Tyme * ? * ? promo 04:: Philter * beautiful lies rmx * dub 03:: Special Forces * inta warriors * prototype 02:: UFO * blackmail choon (konflict rmx) * skunkrock promo 01:: Paradox * paradigm * partisan dj mixtapes,booking offers,and music production demos are still welcomed. It was done using... http://www.audiomulch.com and the 5 piece drum kit they provided. No other samples used, and Cakewalk was the cutting board... ANYWAY! I made it with the intention of DJ's using it, and not really consumers just sitting there with it on the CD player. So what you get is a long track! Of course, if you like to sit and listen to it GREAT! It was done this way so there was plenty of room to do crazy mixing, dancehall crashing and fader slapping... Blah Blah Blah! USE YOUR HEADPHONES! This is an odd track. Real noizy/ambient hardkore... It's my first posted track ever. I haven't been programming for very long, and this is one of my first solo attempts (without any help from computer geek buddies). All comments welcome!
