V/A - kaen bin - suburban trash industries - a 12" id thought id never see, randomly in with some bad gabber records at some trance store. dont ask. panacea - "tron/torture" - position chrome - damn, i could have bought about 10 more of the old PC stuff i dont have, but i had limited funds. i couldnt put this one down though, too classic and i didnt have it. teebee - "the execution/suspended animation" - thermal recordings - really nice toons by teebee on this san fran label. also with really nice artwork on the cover. juju - "koka" - thermal recordings - this is a really fucking nice track. its got a mixture of the konflictish techno sounds, and some warmishness in the bass, all thrown together with some bongos. fucking running toon, and with an etching on the flip side by the same artist who did the cover art of the teebee record. go buy it. flux + rinse - "killa" - one sided, no label - this tune fucking crushes. its got the chopped up amens, rave stabs, and ragga samples that are all the rage in today's drum and bass, and they do it with class. i imagine ill be playing this one for some time to come. buy it on sight if you can find it, i hear its a very limited run. bulletproof - "???????" - subtronix - more deep technoish sounds from bulletproof, this time on a new zealand label. ive got the white label, so i dont have the track names. i really like the a side, but its a quality 12" overall. file under "konflictish" a-sides - "bustin up styles" EP - east side - i only bought the second disc of this double pack since it was an option. the a+b sides were bland. c+d rock though. c is "rocksteady" which has the seemingly required pitched down amens, rave stabs, and chick singing samples. d is "wake up 2000 (a-sides vs. peshay mix)" which comes with some jazzy shite. good diverse 12". felony (??) - "??????" - breakbeat culture white label - i have no idea about who this is, or what the tracks are called. one side has got some nice atmospherics in the beginning, and some samples of which i could only discern the words "rodger" and "gravity". so i have no idea what the fuck they were talking about. i think jungle toons should start sampling george carlin and richard pryor instead of sci-fi shit. sci-fi is so 1996. anyway, that side runs into some rude bass and rolls out from there. the flip has some nice sliced up sounds in the intro that make for fun mixing, and then in comes the oh-so typical sounding bass pattern made famous by the usual suspects and badco long ago. all in all a solid dancefloor 12", nothing new, but excellent on the danefloor, id imagine. especially with the sci- fi samples. you know how those kids like the sci-fi samples. spirit - "underpass/prologue" - genetic stress - it seems like everyone and their mother (and even my mother) had this record for like months on promo before i picked it up when it got a real release. anyway, its all about the b-side on this one. its minimal, a little funky, and its got some cool fucking synth sounds right before the breakdown near the end of the record. its the kind of track you have to let develop itself. the flip is the more dancefloor track, with the hollow sounding bass that spirit is semi-famous for. skynet + stakka - "knight lore/global report" - underfire - you know, im starting to really love these guys. they make tracks that sound dark so unlike how other tracks sound dark. they use all kinds of eerie epic synth sounds, and dark but not too dirty basslines. and one of the tracks even has a sci-fi sample! how original! naw, seriously, this is good but, dare i say, typical of these guys. thats not a bad thing, though. nucleus and paradox (i think, by the sound of the breaks) - "?????" - reinforced (rivet 153) - if this 12" had nothing to do with paradox, you can revoke my jungle deejay license. the breaks are so distinctive sounding, it has to be him. just rude live sounding breaks on one side, and some more typically programmed but still rough sounding breaks on the flip. i love this sound of breaks, id play it no matter what. danny breaks - music for martians LP - true playaz - i thought true playaz was not allowed tpo release any more good music, but i guess i was wrong. this double pack is outstanding for its hiphop and its drum and bass. all of it is good, but the standout toon is "aquatica". this might be one of the more original sounding toons ive heard since that krust toon with the violins. living up to its name, it has all kinds of sounds and efx that put you deep into an underwater city. the clanging breaks sound like a stuttering submarine engine, and the bass comes in like a warm undercurrent. you can buy this double pack for this toon and not feel disappointed. stretch - "4 real/massive" - reinforced - fuck, this label now makes up like 1/2 my record box. they should start giving me dubplates and promos. if anyone out there has the connections, fwd my sentiments on this issue to them, maybe theyll give em to me ; ) anyway, this is really reto sounding, to the point that the songs are actually slow, maybe 165-170 bpm. "massive" has a break ripped straight from some anthemic track but i cannot remember which one. if anyone remembers, let me know, its been killing me. other than that break which sounds soooooooooo good, its got atmospherics, female vocal snippets, and an emcee sample of a raggaish guy saying "massive" (who woulda thunk it?!?). absolutely beautiful toon, with so many elements that you wont be getting bored with it anytime soon. the flip, "4 real", has got the more modern sounding breaks, but aqlso has an emcee sample, a little bit of the ravey stabs, some drumrolls(!!!!!!!!!!!!), and some jump-up bass. this record could have been released in 95 and not sounded too out of place. a little more mashed up drum programming could have made this my 12" of the year, but how much can i really ask for? i REALLY want more toons that feel this good to come out. kemal + rob data - "the mummy/bleed" - negative - these toons have been played out to everyone. theyre still pretty fucking good though. hard, dark, etc. buy it if youre not sick of it already. calibre - "mystic/feelin" - creative source - wow. this is a candidate for record of the year, no doubt. AFAIK, this is only calibre's second release (the first being that one on green records... if he has any more that i missed, someone let me know!!). this 12" is absolutely beautiful. its got some disco, some jazz, some funk, some vocals, and some goddamn drum and bass. i had almost totally forgotten about this guy, and now i crave his LP like nobody's business. BUY THIS RECORD. dont be a sucker who gets caught with his/her pants down. john b - "hold it down/the way i feel" - creative source - everyone seems so concerned these days with the way they feel. maybe these producers are into counseling or something? i dunno. but these toons will probably be totally overlooked just like john's other stuff that is in a similar vein as this, mainly his stuff that came out recently on shoebox. also i imagine it will be overshadowed by the calibre which came out on the same label on the same week. but these are still very good toons. female vocals are the main course, and they are delicious. he lays em over top of the deep bass and progressive sounding synth lines. i go nuts for this stuff, most "soldiers" i imagine will think its weak. krust - "kloakin device (vocal mix)" - full cycle - does one little vocal snippet make a song good enough to warrant buying it again? i certainly thought so. the sample really makes this anthem 100 times better. to tell you the truth, i didnt even listen to the flip when i bought it, and i still havent. its all about the sample. "use your cloaking device. hahahahaha. i didnt think so". brutal. splash - babylon (dillinja remix) - juice - more jump up stylee, and im actually glad to see this sound coming back in a not-so- cheesy way. there is one major drawback of this toon, the "babylon...........remix" thing during the second breakdown makes me wanna rip out dillinja's vocal cords. so just mix out of this before the second breakdown, and you wont be ridiculed by your friends. also for an added bonus, you get a full side pressing of the original on the flip. teebee vs brandy - "you dont know me" - white label - even more jump-uppish records. coooooooool. i like brandy's music anyway, so this one is naturally awesome to me. teebee rocks a bassline that works with the vocal nicely. teebee's breaks are quite funky, and have a warm feeling overall. not a smashing toon, but i imagine it will fit nicely on the dancefloor. the flip is the instrumental of the track, which i found useless, since i like the vocal. V/A - aftermath LP - renegade hardware - a number of these songs are already anthems, and have been apparently played to death by everyone. but since i never go out, this was the first time i ever heard konflict's "messiah", which is a good toon. overall its got that typical dark RH vibe going on, so ill just review my favs. digital's "rock steady" is solid dub-raveyness. future cut's "horns 2000" is a fantastic song, with droning horns that sound to me very much like bagpipes. "moonwalk" by marcus intallex + st files is the standout on the LP IMO. its got a male r+b vocal, plus some funky warm breaks that dont really fit in with the vibe of the rest of the album. then it breaks down with a repeated vocal loop that says something like "gangsta hop" (i wonder if they got it from a sci-fi film?). and in drops the warm bass, marcus intallex style. absolutely beautiful toon, i just dont understand why its on RH. somehow i dont feel like this album is quite as inspired as last year's "armageddon", but its still quite good. dj rolando aka the aztec mystic - "jaguar" - underground resistance - this is a repress of a detroit classic, and what a fucking toon it is. i slept on the original pressing, so i had to pick this up. this is the track that was made even more famous when sony hired some people to make a cover version. fuck that, UR won in the end. this track is so beautiful. go get it, while its still around. and guess whats even more insane? ill have reviews of about 18 new records on thursday to send to all of you! being broke must really kick ass, since i dont seem to mind spending all my cash on vinyl. tom ________________________________________________________________ andythepooh.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: darkstep-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: darkstep-help@hyperreal.org From darkstep-return-824-archive-darkstep=hyperreal.org@hyperreal.org Wed Nov 08 02:10:44 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: archive-darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 19612 invoked by uid 250); 8 Nov 2000 02:10:43 -0000 Mailing-List: contact darkstep-help@hyperreal.org; run by ezmlm Precedence: bulk X-No-Archive: yes list-help: list-unsubscribe: list-post: Delivered-To: mailing list darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 19588 invoked from network); 8 Nov 2000 02:10:42 -0000 Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 21:17:47 -0500 (EST) From: "Skinner -Oderint, dum metuant-" To: DarkStep Mailing List Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Subject: [darkstep] Shadows of Shadows Passing. (2) U.L.T.I.M.A.T.U.M. (2) Friday December 8, 2000 at the Killtime, Philly The next wave of electro brutality is upon us. A night to revel in the sounds of digital hardcore, broken beat, rhythmic noise, downtempo, ambient, experimental, tech step, drill n' bass, dark techno, and other harsh musical oddities. Headlining the 'Dance' area will be Shuai from Richmond, VA. Shuai's brand of digital noisecore defiance has been described as "dark, nasty, twisted - and absolutely beautiful. Refreshingly original, and both technically complex and precise" by DJ Times Magazine. With a new EP under his belt, this soldier is read to take Philly by storm. Other 'dance' area performers include Mind Corrosive (live PA, dark tech step), Liondragon (dj gabber/jungle from VA), Oblivion (dj, hardcore/dark techno), Nodal (dj, rhythmic noise/broken beat), and Kesserich (dj, harsh industrial). Headlining the 'Chill' upstairs area will Su8m3g3d (Ohm/Collision Substance Records) from D.C. Known more for their ripping drum n' bass, Su8m3g3d are bringing it on with a relaxed downtempo/drift set for the Philly heads. After the recent split 12" release with Mick Harris's Quoit this band is on the verge of taking over the electronic East Coast… Other 'chill' performers include Demonphonic Industries (live/dj, experimental), Duophone (live, experimental ambient techno) and Dj2bnl (dj, ambient noise). All this plus a Video Installation by Josh Kline!
