About the music program Reason Reason by Propellerhead Software. http://www.propellerheads.se/ The new Reason is a synth, sampler, and drum machine, ReCycle! based loop player, mixer, effects, and a pattern sequencer, with integration for Rebirth. It has the ability to work with both midi and external sequencers. You start with a virtual rack, which effectively simulates a real studio. Then you can add sections: the Mixer, the Sampler, Loop Player, VA synth, or a various collection of filters and effects. This is a fairly big program; it comes on 2 cds and requires 80-500 mb free to install, depending on if you want your sample banks on the HD or not. I highly recommend installing them to your machine; it's much easier and faster, and you don't have to put the damn cd in every time. Another recommendation I'd make is to install Reason to the root dir of your HD, so that when you want to go to the sample bank and get items you can simply go to /reason, as opposed to wading through other directories. My walk through of Reason began with a basic song. First I loaded up the mixer, which I found very simple and easy to use. It's a virtual version of your typical multi channel studio mixer. Next, I decided to load up the drum machine. Personally, I didn't fancy it too much. The sounds were very bland, and it was a step time drum machine, like a real 909/808. However, it will be a familiar experience for any Rebirth user. I did play with it in some of the demo songs, and it seemed to work well with minimal CPU usage, but as it wasn't as dynamic as I had hoped. Then, I decided to load up the sampler. I have used samplers for a long time and am accustomed to using something which functions in this manner. What is great about the sampler mod, is that it has various filters and effects mods, and lfo's you can assign to your samples, giving you an extreme amount of flexibility. So I loaded up a few of my drum kits and some of my nice white noise sounds, and started working on a song. To be honest it sounded pretty good; I didn't experience really too much latency. I wrote a simple drum pattern and a few synth patterns to get the idea of how it works. It was straightforward step time notation. Pleased, I wanted to get a bit more fancy, so I loaded up the synth. The stock synth sounds great, but it was not the easiest thing to program, so those without prior experience on a real VA or analog synth might have some trouble generating unique sounds. That aside, I wrote a basic bang of sounds and started to work on some patterns. The one thing I found limiting about the synths was that there wasn't a large collection of them to rack into Reason; I am sure they will create more mods to give users more options, but right now it is limited to the stock synth. The effects portion is great; one of the best features of Reason is its "virtual patch bay", which allows the user to patch synths and effects into the mixer as well as each other and gave me a highly dynamic setup for sound manipulation. Another feature of Reason, which I really liked, is its CPU monitor bar, which tells how many resources you are using as you add mods and sounds so that you don't get to bogged down. I found it hard to really push the program to its limit writing basic songs, but when I got into more complex sound structures I started to experience latency issues. To be honest for the majority of newbies, amateurs and semi-pros this latency issue will not become a concern. Of course this does depend on the system you run it on (this test was done on a PIII 667 with 128 MB RAM). MY main complaint with Reason is the latency issue - without a powerful computer and no real DSP, you can max out the resources on this program, however, if you are not that involved, it is a good option to consider. Another drawback I found is that its sequencer is not very robust. I found it better to use cubase and rewire to link it up, and do my patterns in there rather than with the stock sequencer. Once again, unless you have experience in other programs, starting with the one Reason offers will not offer you many problems. I regard the limitation of the synths offered as a minor drawback, as I am confident it will change with time. I definitely recommend Reason for the beginner and/or people who liked using out board samplers before. Since the setup and sample player portion of reason is great, esp. when integrated with an external midi KB, one can easily write a song with it. Reason is a good program that, like most software-based systems, has its limitations. If you want a good sample player with an option to add a synth or two, it is a great program to look at. It's also a great place for people who plan on expanding to outboard gear down the road to start, as the concepts are the same and the user will acquire a rudimentary understanding of how a gear-based studio works. -- Skinner http://djskinner.net http://gabber.org http://blackmonolith.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: darkstep-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: darkstep-help@hyperreal.org From darkstep-return-1031-archive-darkstep=hyperreal.org@hyperreal.org Tue Mar 06 15:49:47 2001 Return-Path: Delivered-To: archive-darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 12923 invoked by uid 250); 6 Mar 2001 15:49:46 -0000 Mailing-List: contact darkstep-help@hyperreal.org; run by ezmlm Precedence: bulk X-No-Archive: yes list-help: list-unsubscribe: list-post: Delivered-To: mailing list darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 12900 invoked from network); 6 Mar 2001 15:49:45 -0000 User-Agent: Microsoft-Outlook-Express-Macintosh-Edition/5.02.2022 Date: Tue, 06 Mar 2001 10:46:22 -0800 From: jesper To: Message-ID: Mime-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Subject: [darkstep] got mix? Timeblind damages NYC and Brooklyn with his live and dj sets regularly, and on top of all this he has designed and implented some very groundbreaking software interfaces for music and will be showcasing his live laptop manipulations as well as dj'ing skills on the Aqualounge stage. He is the broken hip hop beat master, do not miss this rare chance to catch him in Philly..... more info on Timblind can be found at:www.crucial-systems.com In addition, Slipstate will be presenting another rare performance: the square off between Dev79 and Instruction Shuttle. Both of these acts represent Zenapolae Records and will be collaborating on a set together in a one time only, improvisational fashion. Instruction Shuttle will lay down textures of dark ambience while Dev79 brings the ill hop flow. more info on these artists can be found at:www.zenapolae.com Slipstate resident, Charlie Brownski, will also be on hand to make sure that the ruckus element of trippyness is not forgotten. The bad news is that HTML is still (and will continue for the foreseeable future to be) absolutely forbidden on this list for security and bandwidth reasons. The good news is that, if you have Microsoft Office installed, you can finally set AOL to send plain text messages, which will once again allow you to post to NE-Raves. Instructions, gathered from another list, follow: If you use AOL, and you open Outlook Express, there will be a heading across the top that says,"Outlook Express provided by America OnLine." If this is so, then click on: Tools/Options/Send There are two boxes there, one for HTML and one for Plain Text. Check the Plain Text box, and then click on the "Settings" next to it. Select "Mime" and and encode using "none." Save the new settings. This will turn off the HTML in AOL messages and everything will be sent in plain text. If the user has more than one ISP, and he has downloaded their version, each will overwrite the previous one. Any upgrade always reverts back to the OE default settings. *respect to fkflippin the orginal auth. I was going to submit this for the DSL cd, but I didn't get it finished in time. It's a darker style (not super dark though) track with sorta an eerrie sci-fi vibe, a big bassline, and even a little retro hardcore action. The working title is "incite". I haven't mastered it yet because I was hoping for some feedback on it before I do, because once I master it, its done, and feedback doesn't do me much good then. It still sounds pretty good for not bring mastered though :) The URL is: http://www.mijunglist.com/~komplex/incite-premaster.mp3 as a high quality mp3. There's a smaller and lower quality mp3 at: http://www.mijunglist.com/~komplex/incite-premaster-LQ.mp3 The server its hosted on is pretty fast, so I recommend going for the high quality one unless you're stuck on a slow modem or something. Things have been quiet as of late, but that's about to change. I've recently uploaded a new piece, entitled 'Scar Tissue,' without going into the specifics of the title, I'd rather just give a short description, and say it's an uneasy piece of ambiance being overcome by harsh aggression. I'll also send out another mail in a few days, as such I'm waiting on mp3.com to approve another piece I uploaded, should be about 2 days or so. So in the meantime, check this new one out: Scar Tissue: http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/1405/1405432.html Feel free to drop me a line and let me know how you like it, as ambient DNB isn't my forte, but you'll see I added my own style to it. Even if you aren't a fan of ambient, the likelyhood is you enjoy this, as it doesn't completely stay ambient, a little journey of experimental sound, if you will, and gets into some decent beatwork after some time. Enjoy. Also quickly, I'd like to drop my thanks to dnbscene.com for a wonderful review and their kind words recently, here's a link: http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/1405/1405432.html Give a read, and a download... The track is 'The Center (Incarnadine remix),' and the original is from Jonny Global AKA Penetrator, to which I owe thanks as well. piece for now... I'll drop a line again in a few days. This release is done by Unusual Incident and features two tracks: "1066" is a solid tech-step track with some 909-ish sounds, dark atmospheric sounds and a nice analogue bassline which is introduced slowly but surely as the track progresses. "Static Implant" is the track that really does it for me though: very nice layering of beats and sounds leading, inevitably, to juno-oldschool-mayhem brought together by a nice vocal sample. One of the big sid guys coined the term. Cosine Zero bought a >kick ass HardSid card that he needs to get off his ass and write a >review for!!!! Once the Sid VST is in my hands I will be writting a >review of that. -->Review... oh yes. My HardSID Quattro came last week, and I love it. This card has the ability to use up to 4 of the same SID chips found in the popular C64 or in the SIDStation synthbox. The sound is what you'd expect from the C64, but so so so much more. The HardSID MIDI drivers just came out in December, but take the SID further than ever before. It's really amazing how far you can stretch 12 voices... and the mono-bass patches are replacing some of my bass patches from the JP8000 in a number of my tracks. It can be 16-part multitimbral (!!) if you set up the voice allocation efficiently, and layering, detuning all 12 voices into one bassline is simply sinister. If you're really irreverant, add a stereo chorus for gravy. Solo patches are very sad and lonely, which is just the way I like 'em. The filter is anything but smooth... very nice and grungy... and with the newer MOS8580 SID's you can really get a very techno-friendly sound, the warmer MOS6581's make for lovely pads. It's not nearly as noisy as the SIDStation is rumoured to be, and it's a hell of a lot phatter than I remember the SIDs to be... Plus, a major MAJOR advantage over the SIDStation is the ability to use the MOS8580 SID's (found in later C64C's and C128's). Very nice addition to my studio, I will probably use it in every one of my future tracks. There are a few minor problems I've seen with it... they are as follows: 1. No midi volume response. You have to mix the SIDs manually, or adjust the volume envelopes to get the volume you desire. It's not been a huge problem, especially if you have an outboard mixer, but it means certain planning needs to go into complex fades. 2. Midi controller routings were thought up by a C64 SID programmer, not a "studio musician". Things that you can mod are nearly useless to me, and things that you can't mod are sometimes very important to me (for instance, you can't route velocity to portamento time...) 3. Noise. While it is not very noisy, after you have sent notes to it, some of the oscillators hang making tiny bits of noise. It's dealable (prolly around -50db) but a noise gate would really be worthwhile. To put it in perspective, it makes about the same amount of noise that my Roland JX8P makes when it's chorus is turned on but no notes are playing. However, the Roland JX8P's remaining usefulness in my studio is drawing to a close... the HardSID has much better sound, more timbrality, and is easier to program... so as soon as I have found a suitable replacement for it's large keyboard, I will be selling myJX8P. On the upside, 1. Basses are not just phat, they have a very sinister, dirty quality that I have tried to find elsewhere but couldn't. This has freed up both my morpheus and my JP8000 to do more worthwhile tasks. 2. The voice allocation methods in the midi driver are very different and in some ways restrictive but they allow for massive layering if you plan things out ahead of time. You can route each midi channel to an independant OSC and still route the remaining 4 channels to control ALL the OSC's. You can make a patch that uses all the OSC's slightly detuned, or modulating each other, or so on... to get some outstanding pads or basses. As stated before, solo leads sound on-par with my JP8000 (which is IMHO the standard by which solo leads should be judged) except for the portamento issue where you can't route realtime control to portamento time. 3. The pulse-width envelope, and PWM abilities, are simply STAGGERING. Many of my pulse-patches don't even dump into the filter, they are that well controlled with the PW controls. If you like PWM, and controlled pulse waves, the HardSID really shines. 4. Let's not forget what makes the SID the SID - weird sounds. While I'm not really used to programming these sort of sounds, other SID programmers out there are writing lots and lots of ideas for weirdness. The HardSID patches have a "Table" like on the SIDStation - which is, in effect, a parameter sequencer. You can sequence waveform changes, filter cutoff values, pulse width values, all sorts of stuff, right from this table. Makes for some crazy wavetable-cycling and stuff. Plus, with 8(!!) LFO's per patch, and env's where you need 'em, you can make all sorts of weirdness happen over time. 5. For those of you remembering your C64 and asking "Why would I want that sound? It was cheesy!" ... the HardSID sounds incredible in a studio environment. Most people remembering the C64 recall the sound from their tiny television speakers... however the SID was a very capable synth that could create sub-bass floors and bright highs. 6. For a company that is basically just a couple of guys building these boards for something to do ... the HardSID is built like a tank, the drivers installed with no problems, installing the SIDs and configuring the card to handle the MOS8580 SID took no time at all... Very professional, and very reliable, and I highly recommend dealing with them. 7. YOU CANNOT SAY A DAMN THING ABOUT THE PRICE. For $80USD you get the 1 SID card. For $150, you get the Quattro (4 SID) version. (both prices are with no SID's included, you'd supply the SID's from your favorite C64(it's worth it!)) ... that's $150 for a 12 voice vintage/retro synth that can be used for up to 16 part multitimbrality. Can you beat that? I put up a quick sample of the sound at briefcase.yahoo.com/cosinezero ... the MP3 called "phatsid" has an example of a mono bass patch I wrote in just a few minutes on the hardsid. Nothing else is SID in that mp3 but *I* think it the bass sound speaks for itself. I will be posting more demos as soon as they are finished... ...and for more info, www.hardsid.com is the place. If you're a synthgeek like I, you might want to reach for the lotion first... because this is the stuff that I'd only fantasized about for years... Later... cosinezero --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: darkstep-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: darkstep-help@hyperreal.org From darkstep-return-1069-archive-darkstep=hyperreal.org@hyperreal.org Fri Mar 30 21:09:40 2001 Return-Path: Delivered-To: archive-darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 13142 invoked by uid 250); 30 Mar 2001 21:09:28 -0000 Mailing-List: contact darkstep-help@hyperreal.org; run by ezmlm Precedence: bulk X-No-Archive: yes list-help: list-unsubscribe: list-post: Delivered-To: mailing list darkstep@hyperreal.org Received: (qmail 13005 invoked from network); 30 Mar 2001 21:09:23 -0000 From: OsmosisProdDC@aol.com Message-ID: Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2001 16:08:49 EST To: 313@hyperreal.org, ambient@hyperreal.org, amenbreakz@yahoogroups.com, a-raves@yahoogroups.com, boston-raves@ravedata.com, darkstep@hyperreal.org, draves@yahoogroups.com, EMUSIC-L@AUVM.BITNET, gabber@hyperreal.org, hardheadz@yahoogroups.com, idm@hyperreal.org, lowlands@hyperreal.org, mw-raves@hyperreal.org, nw-raves@hyperreal.org, nyc-raves@hyperreal.org, okraves@yahoogroups.com, pb-cle-raves@hyperreal.org, sacraves@hyperreal.org, saudadesdobrasil@lists.princeton.edu, sfl-8up@yahoogroups.com, sfraves@hyperreal.org, stl-raves@yahoogroups.com, te-ch-no@egroups.fr, txraves@onramp.net, uk-dance-digest@uk-dance.org CC: M3music@aol.com MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="part1_b7.caf6b7c.27f64fe1_boundary" Content-Disposition: Inline X-Mailer: AOL 6.0 for Windows US sub 10520 Subject: [darkstep] *Come Dance With Me* Saturday March 31 in Washington DC --part1_b7.caf6b7c.27f64fe1_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="ISO-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Come Dance With Me.=20 SATURDAY MARCH 31st, 2001=20 M3 Music - Washington DC - http://www.mth= re3.com/=A0 ((((( WHAT ABOUT "SPRING FWD"??? =A0OUR TIME SLOTS WILL NOT CHANGE))))=20 WE WILL CONTINUE OUR NIGHT LIKE THE TIMES NEVER CHANGED!!!!=20 PASS IT ON.=20 line up:=20 GENE FARRIS.=20 Farris Wheel Records.
