Jeez, here I am at midnight of the second, NZDT, just starting work. :-/
Working at a university, the worst fault we've had in 24 hours has been
someone who had some automatically generating files that are now coming
through from the year "2099".

But, hey, that still justifies having 2 of us here on the helpdesk 24 hours a
day I'm sure. :-)

Subject: (atom) Review: "Dropshadow Disease" (lengthy)

The first time i listened to this release it made my mind tired. Now it
simply intrigues it. The amount of detail and subtlety to be found here is
amazing, in a melodic as well as percussive way. Atom Heart takes a
traditional form of musical structure and jaggedly reassembles it into
synthetic parodies of itself, but that are often more beautiful than the
original. Infused with a great deal of playful happiness, "Dropshadow
Disease" is emotionally childish while being technically over-learned. I find
it's possible to view this music with the careful, discerning attention of the
ADULT and also enjoy it in a purely superficial manner like a child playing
with blocks (i experience this with much of Atom Heart's music).

     Anyway...

     Dropshadow Disease - - - "drop!shadow disease"...burbling and scratchy
percussion opens the disc, setting a playful mood. a quick, bobbing rhythm is
combined with textural sweeps and the track evolves quite quickly. at this
point the most notable culprit of this album makes its appearance: vocals
The music continues to squirm and start along while a singing voice (who could
it be? :) works with a minimal keyboard melody. And here the first of the
album's many many stuttering drum breaks serves as an interlude. These drums
sound like a collage, a fluttering and ticking pattern that is manic but
quiet, almost tickling the listener, daring you to follow the rhythm. The
track quickly begins to deassemble itself and is led out into a minimal
section by the vocal stylings :) The atonal bubbly sweeps and tracking rhythm
are almost ambient in nature, clicking along like wallpaper patterns.

Ping Pong (True Type) - - - a quick look at the very core of the theory
behind the structure of this music. A set of ping-pong samples is reversed,
distorted, cut up, thrown together and shuffled into line. Just a sketch, an
explanation or a demonstration almost...

Farbe/Beispiel/Einrasten - - - Here the emphasis is much more on
percussion. An advancing progression of scattered "Farbe" drums form a couple
short "Beispiel" interludes into the main body of the track "Einrasten". Here
the melodies are very minimal and abstract and take a while to make themselves
known, as fluttering, soft drill 'n' bass makes a soft but intense texture
with some padded bass. This is for the most part an abstract look at drum and
bass, but a bending tonal solo and emtional keys convince us that it's
something more. Active keyboard work (Courtesy of Lisa Carbon) winds down
into a shallow well of a drum solo, dancing with one another for a while.
this leads into a royal-sounding interlude of snagging beats, and after a
moment, switches directly back to the original theme and fades out gracefully.

Duplex (Kurve, Night Modus) - - - One of Atom Heart's production elements
is a simple melodic repetition that exists in the background of all the
frenzy, and which never fails to add depth and cohesion to it. Here is a
perfect example of this as snapping percussion (which sounds very 2D) is
underlaid by a periodic single note which resonates, adding depth to the
otherwise flat and mechanical clicks of rhythm. This is much less melodic and
begins to minimize itself into a simpler format, and eventually finds a
robotic grouping of abstract noise to fade out it....

Bouncing Initials - - - a jazzy, miniature little intro ushers in a full,
reggae-ish rhythm and is immediately joined by a multitude of instruments,
synthetically pounding and waiting, with keyboards and vocals woven into the
cut up threads of percussion. After a time this artificial island symphony is
suddenly interrupted by another stuttering drum solo which then exactingly
works its way back into the introduction's jazzy piano, which ends out in an
odd solo.

Fototienda - - - latin jazz combines with vocals again, forming a repeat
on the "live synthetics" of the last track. Forefront male/female vocals and
keyboards form the main front of an almost TV-commercial-sounding dance,
continues in a jungly, partyish fashion and fairly soon the vocals sign off
and only the instrumental is left, which builds slowly, intstrument upon
instrument, through levels of carnival-style revel into a circus-like ensemble
and ends in a humorous spirit. Perhaps Atom Heart here was inspired by
Nintendo? This track seems to borrow stylistic influences from both Donkey
Kong and Super Mario Kart :)

    KPT v. 1.0 - - - In this slow and young-spirited track, hyper-synthetic
textures and a tiny bass guitar are a contrast to warm melodies and organic-
sounding percussion. An extremely deep and soulful sound is produced here,
this being the most melancholy part of the album for me. the ending is filled
with steel drums and a screeching Photoshop file texture, and a final keyboard
semi-solo which is reminiscent of Machine Paisley.

KPT v. 1.1 - - -the most ambient track is a short look at the clip-art
influenced style of this record. Photoshop files are translated into digital
static, a highly textural sound and spine-scratching! Abstract noise is
painful but fun.

Cut 'N' Paste - - - Playful christmas-light melodies open this track. Al
kinds of rhythmical rules begin to disintegrate as the percussion begins to
establish itself. Here Atom Heart seems to be almost mocking the traditional
concept of rhythm as the beats skip this way and that, heedless of any kind of
direction, this is x/4 rhythm.

Dingbats - - - Muted and carpety bass work together with treble guitar and
simple percussion to make music that sounds like a jazzy children's birthday
party. This is an ode to the Dingbats font.."so cute and tiny". 2D coloring
book elements are underlaid with moments of depth and then resolve into a
surprising loop which begins to fade out as soon as you realize it's the
end...

Push the Little Daisies - - - This works well as an ending track, being
uplifting, optimistic and quirky but serious, leaving a definite impression.
tight and dry percussion and droning bass build with tension and then burst
out into a vocal-driven chorus, like the bridge on the soundtrack theme of a
saturday morning cartoon, or commercial. A Mac voice adds its own verse over
the detailed ensemble, which winds down into the final drum and keyboard
wrapup...

*lots of scattered presents at the end*

>
> talk to me:)

i think what happened is basically that those parts of musical compositions
which are repeating within one piece got shorter and shorter throughout the
history of (western) music. in a classical bach/beethove/mozart/etc... piece
there were maybe 2-3 segments which were repeated within a 30 minute piece in
slightly altered form. 100 ago, johann strauss or debussy are good examples
for the *shrinking* of the musical piece itself. strauss' *blue danube* with
it's 7 minutes (i guess) was the first pop *hit* in history. from there on
pieces got shorter and shorter and especially in popular music the basic
elements of a piece got fewer down to the classic *song*

structure we have right now which works with basically 2-3 main elements. the
*song* as we know it had its historical peak with the beatles. i doubt that
everybody ever wrote a song after them. for this reason *satisfaction* may not
be such a good example. this song is much more an exception because at the
same time many, many other bands/composers (such as lennon/mc cartney) were
composing relatively complex yet catchy songs. *satisfaction* in a way,
anticipated the end 70's *punk* movement, which discarted the classical *song*
and reduced it to even fewer elements. until the 70's, even in *classical* pop
music (disco), complexity was still an important

topic (bee gees!!!). the fact that things were looping although slowly became
obvious. the loopy character more and more got developed but human

slopyness (session musicians) still covered this fact. even a loopy 70's disco
song from the 70s sounds irregular and *complex* because it is played and not
programmed. the introduccion of machines in the late 70s in

popular music plus the misinterpretation of kraftwerk by early *techno*/
*house* producers lead to a music where the *patterns* which the architecture
of the machine is offering you (a tool) suddenly became the only timespan
composers where able to think in. i distinct though thouse composers which
really compose a piece (like kraftwerk for example) and those which *just*
make *tracks* (the entire chicago school for example). kraftwerk always made
classical *songs* in its most purist form, but simply using different
arrangements. *house*, a completely unacademic movement, got it upside down
and thought that the minimalism itself is the *key*...it wasn't. we ended up
in 4/4 timeframes which roland and others implemented for the sake of
easyness. at the same time though i think that we really lost the ability, not
only in music, to think in long, complex structures. i mean, look at the power
of the machines we use... theoretically we could do the most complex music
ever made...and we are looping over and over 4 bars...to come to a conclusion,
i think that the entire socilogical/systemical development is moving towards
becoming more and more simple and music is reflecting that (unconsciously).

> **** SO can I challenge you to write a 30+minute composition? Not like

>
> talk to you soon,
> gilly

hehe...i am thinking about this now for quite some time, actually doing a 60
minute piece of extreme complexity. the concept is cooking if you know what i
mean. i am still missing the aesthetical framework though...just making a
complex 60 minute piece is not enough to start with. also i am into short
complex pieces right now and suppose to expand the duration of my songs, after
writting nice popsongs for the next 5 years, around 2005 :)

This last bit really heartens me, to hear that AH writes stuff with more

Hopefully that makes sense. Expansion on request. :)

Did anyone else reply to this? Perhaps privately...
Anyway, I don't have much time today, but my response is:

A) I basically like it and would never consider getting rid of it.

But...

B) It has never made a huge impression on me and is not particularly
   memorable.

C) Except the cover photograph, which is very cool "phuturelounge"-ish.

If you've heard other Lisa Carbon, this is no radical departure or change.
This is perhaps more chilled and relaxed than the others.

One of the latter tracks has a very nice guitar solo by Pete Namlook, in a
supposedly live recording (there is audience clapping -- is it live or
Memorex?).

I need to listen to it again soon!

I'm not really a fan of the vocals. Part of what drew me to techno &
ambient & electronic music in the first place was wanting to get away from
lyrics and trad song stylings. Also, the great respect you might
otherwise have for an instrumental-based musician can be undermined by
lyrics that you can't get behind. This hasn't happened with Uwe, but it's
a risk. I like the musician to be a blank slate that I don't really know
too much about.

I agree with Brad. In fact I would even say that there are very few
vocalists that have ever interested me, I do like Don Van Vliet though.
Sometimes I would love to have versions of all sorts of music without the
singing, at times it feels like graffiti.

The great thing about current technology, is that material can be
realised by a composer as they originally intended. Singers tend to bring
a lot of personal baggage that many people enjoy. I tend to prefer
instrumental music, though I sometimes enjoy vocals in a language I don't
understand.

A purely instrumental version of Render would be great.

There's a Render Audible Remixes album with 303-tweaked instrumentals
available. No vocals on any of the tracks, except the occasional spoken
sample ("Sit...good dog" heheh).

Very good listen if you dig Render. And although I love the remix too, i
think the half-sung vocals in the original "Polaire" are great!

The puzzling thing is that the disc's title is "Render Audible U.S.
Remixes" and yet the disc was made in Austria for Kk in Belgium.

okay, let me start off by saying that i have no intentions of selling
this, nor am i trying to drive up the price so that i CAN sell it. i'm
just genuinely curious as to how rare it is.

anyhow, i've got a Lassigue Bendthaus Render Tour '94 poster. it's white
on black, with some vague thingy graphic on it not dissimilar to the cover
of Pretty Hate Machine. There is small text on the bottom advertising
both the regular "Render" release as well as the "Audible: US remixes".
it's "poster size," about 2x3 feet.

the craziest thing is that i found it at a funky poster/collectible store
here in Austin several years ago, along with a cool sqarish UFOrb poster
(essentially the album cover art). this, mind you, was a store full of
Queen and Mott the Hoople rarites. i think i was charged about 15 bucks
for both!

soooo. . . has anybody else ever seen this thing? i know i've never seen
another before or since. it really looks like something that you'd see
pasted up on some gray concrete wall in a Bruges roadway along with 20 or
so redundant copies.
