Earlier this month, you posted some helpful info including a fax number for
ordering RI releases directly. Would you happen to have any other contact
info, such as a phone number, e-mail, or (heaven forfend!) surface-mail
address? If "H.A.T" is *REALLY* out, I must find a way to get my hands on
a copy as soon as humanly possible... and of course, sooner would be fine
too : )

Haruomi Hosono, Atom Heart, Tetsu Inoue.Hat
Rather Interesting
CD
Those with a running interest in the recent work of Atom Heart's Uwe
Schmidt have no doubt been aware of the growing relevance of
Schmidt's contribution to the growing fusion of experimental
compositional styles characteristic of the last 20 odd years of
electronic music. With increasing vigor--and increasing success--
Schmidt has forged a digital aesthetic that he can truly lay claim to
as his own, weaving fragments of the last few decades of the
experimental avant-garde into a stylistic web as complex as it is
intricate, drawing together ambient, techno, electro, musique
concrete, psychedelia, jazz, lounge miscellany, and any number of
others in sweeping compositions that never seem simply reducible to
the sums of their parts. Through earlier solo albums such as
_Render_ and _Morphogenetic Fields_, collaborations with European
techno experimenteurs such as Victor Sol, Nicko Heyduck, Lisa Carbon,
and Pete Namlook, and his more recent solo work on his own label,
Rather Interesting, Schmidt has steadily brought that vision to a
head of creativity seemingly without limit. The flip side, of
course, has been that Schmidt has also increasingly run the risk of
innovating himself off a cliff, with each successive release pushing
the envelope of his own preoccupations to distances of accomplishment
that seem to belie some eventual grand failure.
Thankfully, that hasn't happened here. With _Hat_, Schmidt takes a
(probably much-needed) breather from playing Ruthless Post-Techno
Deity by collaborating with a pair of electronic music innovators who
could just as easily lay claim to that title: Haruomi Hosono and
Tetsu Inoue. Tetsu has, of course, collaborated with Schmidt in the
past--most notably on the Masters Of Psychedelic Ambiance album _Mu_
and, their first together on Rather Interesting, the Datacide title
_Flowerhead_. Hosono may prove less recognizable to American ears,
but his groundbreaking work as a member of Japanese avant-pop group
Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) has given him a high-profile in the
world of emusic since the 1970s. A Pacific Rim complement to the
equally innovative work of Kraftwerk and, later, electro-pop
fusioneers like Tangerine Dream, David Bowie, and New Order, Yellow
Magic Orchestra were a pivotal force in developing a new musical
language incorporating elements of rock, pop, experimental
electronic, and avant-garde and contemporary compositional styles,
earning a solid place in the guidebook of 20th century music and
influencing scores of musicians the world over in the process. Not
least of which, Tetsu Inoue and Uwe Schmidt.
_Hat_ is therefore significant on a number of levels; although Hosono
has been extremely musically active following YMO's breakup in the
early '80s, releasing albums with his Friends Of Earth band, scoring
for television, film, and video games (!), and releasing many solo
works, beyond his recent contributions to a pair of Bill Laswell-
related projects (and an album of remixes featuring the Orb and Bomb
The Bass), Hosono's had little contact with the younger generation of
electronic composers. _Hat_ brings him together with a pair of
artists who've picked up from where his groundbreaking work has left
off, drawing inspiration and input from Hosono's continuing legacy
while bringing to it elements that could only have developed outside
of it. An anagrammatic reference to its three contributors, _Hat_,
as its name suggests, fuses seamlessly the compositional styles of
Tetsu, Hosono, and Schmidt. Fans of Atom Heart's many recent solo
albums will recognize many of the same quirks, snaps, and
idiosyncrasies as have constituted those, but will also note the
degree to which his often ruthless (some might say self-indulgent)
experimentalism has shifted latterly to a more relaxed, measured
tone, leaving gaps and spaces to be filled by the shifting lattice of
his collaborators. Tetsu's contributions are similar in their
subtlety, lying mostly in the attention to texture and mood he so
successfully brings to his solo work. Hosono is, not surprisingly,
most recognizable in his uncompromised pursuit of fucked-up sounds, a
point all the more interesting sitting in the mix with Uwe's own
sonic tweaks. But while the individual styles or thematic concerns
of Tetsu, Uwe, and Hosono may find play on this or that track to such
and such an extent, the triumph of _Hat_ is, finally, that it is
truly a collaboration, tying together the finest moments of three of
experimental electronic music's most forward-looking figures, and
blending their unique contributions into a coherent sound that is
itself singular and complete.

According to Uwe, this show was unbelievable! He thought the venue was
particularly cool and the best he's played in a long while. He mentioned
spending a few days in the Andes, just chillin' out. Wish I was there, too
busy in NYC to fly to Chile. ;-) About the bootlegs, I vaguely remember
something about Uwe mentioning he used a DAT to tape his show in Syndey.

Unless there is to be an album of the same name, "Overflow" is a single and
was released last year. It was on Kk, I think, and certainly copies were
available in the USA.
Only the Mark Bell (LFO) remixes made it worthwhile, in my opinion. The
sonic detail and structural complexity present in earlier LB material was
not there.
Or is "Overflow" also going to be the title of the pop cover album that he
has talked about making?

Also, you may check Restless Records as they have licenced a number of

This is new, it appeared on the release list in the UK for this week (June
3rd). I take it that the track by I is Uwe. He has recorded under this
name before on POD.
It is called '49/69 Glamour', which looks like something to do with the FAX
number for Germany. I have never heard of this label 'Higlamm
Phonographics' before, and it looks from the cat no. as this is the 1st
release.
Is there anyone on this list from Germany who may have some info on the

I'm not exactly sure, but maybe someone else on this list can fill us
in (Hal?). Pink Elln seems to be almost as much of a mystery as [who is]
Lisa Carbon. In fact Will-E <will@panix.com> said of his discussion with
Uwe during his recent trip to England:
> No he wouldn't tell me about Lisa Carbon or Pink Elln but he did tell me

Ok... (?)
What I do know is that he's one of Uwe's main cohorts in LASSIGUE
BENDTHAUS, also lending quite a bit of remix work on the first few albums
and singles. He is apparently also in SIEG UBER DIE SONNE, PHOBIA, and
MAZZO - I haven't heard any of these unfortunately, but any comments are
welcome (especially from you LB lurkers). I guess he's a MACOS geek as
well. ;}
He did a record with Uwe on Rising High called "Electronique" by ATOM
HEART with PINK ELLN - there's also supposedly a test-pressing-only second
12" for this called "Electronikkka". If you look on the DANDY JACK cd,
you'll notice that he is credited with engineering work. Also, there is a
remix he did on the "One" single by BIGOD 20 which is very very Schmidtish
(one of the better mixes in fact).
One main thing that does confuse me about him though, is that on the
"Progressive Hardcore" compilation (on Rising High) he is credited along
with Caspar Pound and Peter Smith, as being one of the three responsible
for the WHITE HOUSE track... only, Elln (listed as `Eln' (sic)) is
identified as being ATOM HEART. Even more confusingly, I can't tell if
this song is called "White House" by ATOM HEART, or "Atom Heart" by
WHITEHOUSE. Anyone?
Oooops. I guess I raised more questions than answered...

thanks to a friend of mine on this list (thanks andrea!) i recently had
cause to reconsider this rather interesting album (in both senses) after
months of discount. i passed on it when it first came out, finding it
either too dancey or too unfocused (what the hell was i [not] hearing?!),
but in reconsideration--minus the first two songs (DAMN that four-on-the-
floor...)--i find it to be an amazingly rich and occasionally quite
brilliant disc. "namloop" and "compuserf," particularly, i number among
uwe's finest work, and easily the best of his more ambient-electro-leaning
stuff (as on _bass_ and about half of _vsvn_). the transition between his
earlier ri styles (_flextone_ and _interactive_ music and their simpler,
less layerd feel) and his current freakout-overdrive is also pretty
apparent, so the album's also fascinating from a piece-o-the-puzzle
standpoint... i was lucky enough to find an unopened copy (for $12 even!)
at a local rekkid shoppe... check it out if you slept like me...
also, it's not atom heart, but fans of his downbeat, lo-key electro stuff
(like _nature_, _bass_, and some of _silver sound_) and who also have a
turntable i direct toward a recent 12-inch on the dodge imprint titled
"l'aventure," by impulse dodge 004). it's not as layered and complex as
much ah, but the ep's focus on quirky breakbeats, elastic basslines, well-
tuned synth blurps, and offbeat sound manipulation is just as satisfying...
and even (dare i say) quite a bit more funky in spots. also, if anybody
knows anything about dodge and/or impulse or can direct me toward further
recordings of this sort i would much apprec...

ELECTRONICAL STATE OF MIND
Lassigue Bendthaus Talks!
by Lizard
Rising high above the smog of the techno/ambient doodlers shines one
man crusade Lassigue Bendthaus. Lizard donned his silver space suit and
glittery pac-a-mac and chatted to this workaholic dance phenomenon...
To the outsider, Lassigue Bendthaus or Atom Heart or an array of
others, is just another in the long line of technology obsessed bright
young things. To the technohead this is just a facade for one of music's
chameleons...
"Lassigue Bendthaus is my main project", he says matter of factly,
"but I put out at least between eight and ten albums a year with about ten
12"s also."
He's not exactly The Stone Roses is he? No, but what would he class
himself as?
"Basically, I'm just into electronic music, whether it be ambient or
hardcore. I'm just into making music."
Fair enough then. But what are his songs about? Listen to the fine
`Render' album and you will find a ditty simply entitled `JKTV / Otaku (How
Many Angels Can Dance On The Head Of A Modem?)'. Explain yourself Mr.
Bendthaus...
"It's about a way of life coming from Japan, where people are hooked
on one thing, usually collecting. Like people are hooked on collecting
video tapes and that sort of stuff - dedicating their lives to one cause.
It's very interesting to me, JKTV stands for Japanese Kable Television. I
was watching this and I began to collect audio sounds onto tape, the whole
song is a reflection on this lifestyle and the lyrics are quotations taken
from the people of the Otaku cult."
`Render' is chock a block with quotes ranging all the way from
Japanese Kable to William S. Burroughs. Lassigue Bendthaus certainly know
how to be diverse with their range of material...
"I'm very interested in the leading cultures and Japan is so obsessed
with technology, I was collecting audio tapes and reading a lot about the
Japanese culture because I'm interested in what makes it work, all this
collecting and using of quotations is basically to try and find out what's
behind this phenomena. I'm also interested in the technology side of
America as well because those two societies (Japan as well) have the
leading edge in the world."
Using samples or "quotations" is all well and good but as a whole,
most artists will tell you they can get you into trouble. Did Lassigue
Bendthaus have any trouble?
"I'm really hoping no-one will recognise any of the quotations and end
up suing me. There was about three hours of tape full of samples and it
was just too much to ask permission to use them all. I couldn't honestly
remember where they had all come from! Too much information. When I
listen to other dance artists, I usually just sample as I listen..."
Lassigue Bendthaus are/is a member of the Musicians Guild Against
Copyright, a friend of his in Barcelona hit upon the idea of setting up
something to make sampling totally legal. Jive Bunny would [this part is
obscured by a sloppy paste-up job] of relief...
In these days of spiraling technology surely Mr Bendthaus would be
hooked on things like E-mail and other internet computer systems?
"Basically I'm very interested in that. But I don't know enough
people in Germany who have the system. Technology is going too fast, we
don't really appreciate what we're doing or indeed know what we're doing -
it's too complex."

:) i think he means Baudrillard (transcription's a bitch)... that's funny
he's into baudrillard, though. just before i got this message i was
chatting with a graduate student from sweden about various different
musicians/genres/etc. that are interesting from a contemporary
philosophical standpoint (part. that of gilles deleuze, one of
Baudrillard's collegues before his death last year) and i included atom
heart (along with scanner, oval, plug/squarepusher, naked city, david shea,
etc.) in the list...

industrial metal in the vein of (but nowhere near as good as) skin chamber,
pitch shifter, head of david, etc. i don't think shreikback had anything to
do with this, but i could be wrong... (note: like many, there are parts of

The Swamp T's are, IMO, as far removed from the likes of Skin Chamber,
Pitch Shifter, and the like as it gets. Older material (on Machinery) was
in a more "industrial" vein; the last several albums are a sampler's
nightmare, beats and breaks mixing with mutilated guitars... imagine
"Cloned" meets "JKTV" versus Slayer... but much better than that
description! I tend to avoid all things guitar-oriented, but given what
the Swamp Terrorists do to them it's a shame not to make an exception. The
disc mentioned above also includes a disc of pure hardcore "tekkno" for
those interested...
"Get O." is indeed amazing, with the Swamps deconstructing several tracks
and good ol' Uwe massacring the title track itself two times over. Like
most LB/AH material, it must be heard to be believed. :)
Besides, they're MACOS members.

Can't argue for the DM Band, but I would say that the Swamp Terrorists bear
distinct similarities (both musical and conceptual) to Reich and Glass.
Depends on what material you're referencing. I'm not trying to make you
out to be a fool; my point was simply that the Swamp Terrorists will
probably appeal to a lot of people who normally hate things like Skin
Chamber, Pitch Shifter and "industrial metal" in general. People who like
those bands may think they're neat, too.
I hate generalizations. Once you say, "They're this kind of band", half
the people who might be interested will never go out and give them a
chance, because they think they'll sound like Head Of David...??

based upon the strength of other lassigue bendthaus releases i had heard at
the time (including cloned), i got this via mail order without quite
knowing what it was. it didn't do much for me as a direct listen, even
when shuffle played, when i at first made the mistake of considering it to
be a normal music cd, as the text i would later read warned against.
it definitely does make me think a bit more about the construction of the
material on cloned and lots of electronic music in general. now i use it
occasionally as a mixing tool during radio work.

I have been meaning to get that to incorporate into my own music. Are
there individual samples of instruments, or is it just bits and pieces of
the songs? I sure could use some patented Uwe (tm) drums in my work...

I sampled all that stuff one weekend about the time it came out. Just for
kicks I decided to flex my mixing skills and create another Re-Clone (which
I was finally able to send to him a couple weeks ago...only a few years
later). At any rate, it was a cheap excuse to digitally mangle the drum
line from "When the Levee Breaks" beyond recognition.
As for the voice, distortion, a little delay, and EQ effects go a long way.
For the Re-Clone, I put the faster vocals into an Amiga computer, pitched
them down, then into a compressor, gate, and exciter. Maybe some simulated
plate reverb mixed in, don't recall exactly.
I must have used a couple of the kicks and snares by now but damned if I
can remember where.

Huh? That's so absurd.
I think I'm missing the point though... why would the `labelling' of a
compact disc be required? What is the specific problem?
Furthermore, what kind of 'label' are you going to put on these
anyway? I mean, won't that defeat the artistic principle of the release?

there is a cd single (don't know about vinyl) release from this called

also 3 other songs: as she left, opacity, slow motion (totally unlike the

The album it came from, Morphogenetic Fields, is on Rough Trade which is a
pretty big label, no? I should think both are still available. Try EAR/
Rational or the usual places to order from. I have the Milagro 12" which
has no label to indicate the tracks, titles or anything for that matter. A

I can get you a copy. It may take a while, but I do a lot of freelance
album-finding. I subscribe to all the huge record clubs, and the online CD
catalouges. EAR/Rational was pretty lame on selection basis...
I myself have a copy, and it's excellent. Not quite as varied as Matter,
not quite as static as Cloned. If you would like, I'll order you a copy and
you can send me a check. I won't cash it until I ship you the album. I
would probably use Mohawk Music this time.. They're pretty reliable.

Walk away, have a smoke or sleep a while and it sounds groovy again.
As for cover songs in general -- I wouldn't know where to start, and once
started I wouldn't know when to stop. There are so many great songs out
there. Covers seem mostly pointless except if one can improve on the
original in some way or another, or make it truly your own. Lately I've
had an urge to cover a couple Comsat Angels tracks like "High Tide" or
"After the Rain".
I'm looking forward to hearing his cover of "The Future" by Prince. If
forced at gunpoint to pick a Prince song to cover, I'd have to take "If I
Was Your Girlfriend" from _Sign O the Times_ or a track called "Crystal
Ball" that's on a couple of boots. The thing with the latter is it's a
great track that just isn't polished, and is therefore an almost ideal
candidate.

atom heart does elektro.
Its bouncy, it chugs along in wonderful mono,
It has graffitti on the cover,
Its definately good to wake up and smell the earl grey with it playing in
the background,
It isnt just elektro,
it gets really weird and breaks down into those little soundbytes that we

the tracks are as follows...

The problem the customs have is that they need to see the country of origin
displayed on the cd in some form or other. The western world really has a
preoccupation with boundaries and keeping undesirables (including cds) out
of their country.

Man. You know what you guys did? Because of your post, I popped in
the "Milagro" cd single, set it on `repeat', and then accidentally fell
asleep. So there I am, foetus-curled on my pit set, all the lights on, for
hours and hours, with Uwe's housey acid electronica bleeping and blooping
its way into my REM-induced brain... Carmen Miranda kept popping up in my
dreams (or maybe it was Lisa Carbon) whispering over and over again:
"es Milagro ... es Milagro". :}
Too bad my turntable doesn't have auto repeat... otherwise I'd have
one of my MIKE McCOY's stacked on there for hours to no end. Maybe a CD-R
is on the menu for upcoming `things-to-do'? Gotta get motivated.

Atom Heart is going off the deep end with this blast from the past sounds
of 808s and 606's all over the place. It reminds me of early rap sounding
rhythms and tempos mixed in with an array of old Tommy Boy and Sugar Hill
Gang influences. Way out there. It's not credited to him but Charlie

Also, I'm selling off my entire personal Fax collection. I don't have a

Hey.
I just got back from a trip to Gainesville (Florida) this weekend and
a local shop up there had two copies of the "Snap Your Fingers, Break Your
Back" cd single as well as one of the "Who's Fist Is This Anyway?" U.S. cd
single (both) by PRONG. These two releases both feature the ATOM HEART
remix of: "Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck (harder than hardcore)".
If anyone wants any of these, I will have a friend pick them up for me
and send them out to you (wherever). The discs are all used at around $4
apiece, so with postage it really won't be much. Just let me know.

i've been wanting to ask this question for awhile: how did uwe hook up with
prong? did they call him? is somebody close to the band familiar with his
work? or, dare say, is _prong_ familiar with his work? i wish this sort
of thing happened more often...
also, while i'm asking obsessive-compulsive atom heart questions, what are
those little numerical voice sythesizer bits at the end of _silver sound_,
_bass_, and _machine paisley_ all about, and why have the dissappeared from
subsequent releases (well, just _hat_; haven't heard _monotm_ yet)? at
first i thought they were some sort of numerical index of macos releases,
or maybe the number of albums uwe himself has put out...but then it's not
on _hat_...maybe just solo albums?...what's the scoop?

NOT AH related (but still "rather interesting")!
This Flexitone is a couple of Detroit artists working together for Planet
E. It's a picture disc (http://www.submerge.com/WaxPages/Flexitone.html)
which shares the AH love of progressive avante-electro. I just have the
whitelabel at the moment but I would compare it to the early LCT work
without the Uwe signature solos. One track here (the one that spins inside
out) is simply a vocal track of a guy saying words in a phrase reversed and
backwards. Something about "another dimension". I believe the artists in
charge here are associated with the stellar "interdimensional transmission"
label also from Detroit.

yes - many of the CDs are recorded like this. Take BASS for example and
listen to only one ear, then the other and then both combined. Brilliant!
Speaking of, I was visiting Tetsu last week and he played me a track for
the upcoming Datacide CD on Rather Interesting called Holy Microwave. The
stereo imaging is very impressive - one side was recorded in New York, the
other side in Frankfurt. Simply amazing music not to mention very funny.
Tetsu's wife Ingred plays a small role playing a trumpet like instrument
that you can't help but laugh at. You'll realize what I mean when you hear
it... except the album is not yet finished and RI is going on summer
vacation so we won't get any new releases until late August.
I'll update the RI web site within the next couple of weeks.
Thanks

brilliant, i agree. i have been listening this way more often recently.
in fact i got a splitter cable and within seconds i can run either the left
or right channel of the cd into both amplifier channels to get a nice big
mono sound field. 3 cds for the price of 1!
who's gonna be the first to do a channel specific review? ;-)

Having a $3,500 pre-amplifier in my system, I can do this automatically...
but NOT change the level of Bass/Treble. I guess you get what you pay for!

Where in Canada are you? If Toronto, you can check out Republic Records
(Spadina/Queen) or Transatlantic (Adelaide/Spadina). I've seen AH in Tower
Records in the states, so try the Tower at Yonge/Queen. Worst case, you
can always resort to mail order. I believe Brendan from Digital
Underground is on this list. Bug him for a catalog. He's got it all.

much of a selection. I will check out Tranceatlantic tho. Also, I am

ATOM HEART'S _MONO TM_. It AH's version of electro. Cover art even has the
graffiti wall to go with it. First track, _Welcome to Planet Knowledge_ is
full of 808 beats, old scholl scratches, and has a wonderful sample saying
"welcome to planet knowledge" which brings back memories of Newcleus's _Jam

During my first three listens I often found myself thinking "oh that sounds
like _____[insert amazing atom heart track name from RInnn]". As if these
cuts were the mono channel outtakes from previous works. Perhaps I
*should* listen to BASS one channel at a time....anyhow, adding height to
that high jump, the grooves fragment and self destruct. I'll continue my
attempts to get into it but "the early reports were all wrong".1
HAT on the other hand is like sitting in on a delightful electronic jam-
alama. Always an exciting listen. I think (hope) BROWN takes it to a new
level because if not, I'll have to test for Kirksons Disease. Anyways...
