Have you tried Republic Records in Toronto? Better yet, try ordering
online which should be cheaper. These are some good stores that should be
ordering direct from FAX USA:

Sorry I haven't had a chance to update the Rather Interesting site. I've
been rather busy but this weekend I hope to have the scans and information
up on the web site. Additionally, there seems to be a problem with
hyperreal loading the text only version instead of the full HTML version.
Please make sure to have the index.html at the end of the URL for now.

Not true, my copy of Brown does have the usual information on the spine,
the back cover and track listing inside under the CD itself.

Here are the catalog numbers for the latest releases:
RI036 Brown
RI037 H.A.T.
RI038 Mono Trademark

I believe that Charlie is talking about the shipment that was meant
directly for him at FAX USA. I'm sure that other distributors such as
Watts have imported copies of Brown themselves and at a more expensive
price. Since there wouldn't be as many copies of Brown in their shipment
and it would be coming with a whole bunch of other CDs, customs probably
wouldn't have a problem with those shipments. It is also possible that
they just chose this specific shipment at random and decided not to like it
for obvious reasons.

I hope this makes more sense.

Ok. The point of me digging waaaay back into the archives is that I
finally appreciate "B2". I really really have not given it more than two
chances before tonight/this morning (to be honest). But now I'm listing
to it and digging it.

I started the evening off s.m.o.k.-in' with my buddy Chris, listening
to Roky Erickson and then it just kind of mutated into me putting on "B2"
and drawing a picture of Uwe (based on the album's front picture sleeve)
in my sketchbook. Inspiration.

Anyway as an aside, are there any other pictures [around] with Uwe
Schmidt in them? I only have ever seen this and the one on the "Second
Nature" disc - I need something a bit less obscured. Point me please.

No dreammachine for me unfortunately. Just the humming of my air
conditioner and some good dope. And a vegetarian burrito with a glass of
guava juice. Very very loud though (at 12:07am in my house). Markers in
my hand. Inspirational.

Which is funny, considering how it was that I had originally felt

I have. My friend Howie picked it up for me last month in the used
bins for four bucks. I really really dig it. The B-side, "2005", is a
super-infectious trancey epic riddled with nonsensical female vocalings.
The song, "Mother", is more of an instrumental/dub of "2005" with loads of
flange-ing (sp?) drifting in and out. It's got some nice organ-ish
samples throughout as well. Pretty.

What I want to know is what's with all of the PINK FLOYD references?
Like ATOM HEART is most likely derived from "Atom Heart Mother" - as well
as `mother'. And then there's `Pink Elln'. Anything else to add?

Regardless, it makes me happy to know that at least the namesake of
this list is a good record.

Hiya. I talked to Todd Boozer (on the phone) a couple of days ago,
and he told be a bit about yours and his HYPNOTISM conversation. There is
one particular release on that label which I would be very interested in
getting (ALMOST DIGITAL), so you can definitely count me as one of the
interested.

In fact, I am sure there are others. If you are wondering how many
people would in fact be interested in HYPNOTISM stuff, I could probably
get a few of the AH-listmembers to contact you (because of the two ATOM
HEART releases on the label).

So, if you'd like to post something concerning this, please let me
know and I'll forward it to the AH list for you... or just let me know
what you want to say and I'll write it myself. I'll even post it to the
Ambient List, IDM, alt.music.techno, rec.music.industrial, and
alt.music.ambient.

This is all coming purely from an ATOM HEART-perspective, so I'm sure
there are plenty of others who would be into the other HYPNOTISM stuff as
well (Victor Sol, Lagowski, etc.).

My idiot-friend Howie has the following R.I. and FAX cds which he does

ATOM HEART - "Live at Sel i/s/c"
DATACIDE - "Flowerhead"
DOTS - "Elevator Music"

Anyway, here's his want list... he'll make a straight swap for any of
these (on cd is preferable, if the release is available in that format).

BORGHESIA "Love Is Colder Than Death"
THE NEON JUDGEMENT "TV Treated" (cassette)
PANKOW "God's Denube"
REMA REMA "Rema Rema"
SIGLO XX "Dubbed"
SIGLO XX "Antler Tracks 2"
SIGLO XX "1980-1986"
THIS HEAT anything other than "Repeat"

THE WOLFGANG PRESS "The Burden Of Mules"
THE WOLFGANG PRESS "Stand Up Straight"

good news about Modern Music carrying Hypnotism releases. Incidently,
earlier this week my copies of Atom Heart's CDs this label arrived.

I ordered them from cdeurope.com as recommended on this list. It took
about a month or more and cost too much money but I finally have these!
The Bitniks - Halograms (ht01) is great and Almost Digital (ht03) is even
better! They're both beat oriented intelligent trance worthy of being on
the Rather Interesting label. Almost Digital is probably a bit more upbeat
while Halograms is more spaced out and slower paced.

Can anyone comment on the other Hypnotism releases such as the one by
Victor Sol (how does it compare to Sophax on FAX) and another by Lagowski?
When I spoke with Uwe in London he exlained that there won't be any more
contributions by him on this label just so you folks know.

Thanks for the info Christopher!

Well, it all depends on where you would draw the line I suppose. For
instance, some would argue that LASSIGUE BENDTHAUS is indeed Uwe's baby,
but Pink Elln and Olaf Finkbeiner have a lot of input in this project as
well. Also, MACHINE PAISLEY is pretty much all-Uwe, but after studying the
liner-notes it seems more like an Uwe album with `contributions' from all
of his buddies.

I would imagine though that it's a safe bet to consider ATOM HEART as
all-Uwe (every project I've heard, except for maybe the "Whitehouse"
single). The liner notes in most of the AH-related releases are pretty
sparse (so it's hard to tell), but I think these are also Uwe-only
projects:

A.D., ATOMU' SHINZO, BASS, BROWN, COUER ATOMIQUE, DOTS,
ee SURREAL, FLEXTONE, i, INTERACTIVE MUSIC, MIKE McCOY, MONO TM,
ONGAKU, SEMIACOUSTIC NATURE, SILVER SOUND (minus "Congo"), SLOT,
SOFTCORE, SUPERFICIAL DEPTH, VSVN, WEIRD SHIT

If anyone can disprove any of these, I would like to know as well. I
have a feeling that maybe ONGAKU, SLOT and WEIRD SHIT are Uwe with someone
else, but I really have no idea.

Whew.

I just finished a complete overhaul of the pre-existing ATOM HEART/
LASSIGUE BENDTHAUS discography that was originally compiled by Ashur and
Will-E (quite a while back). Anyway, what I did was basically just move
stuff around, make some additions and corrections, and condensed it even
further. Thanks for the skeleton guys.

The way I've set it up is in the form of an easy-to-read `grocery-
list'. Basically, the idea behind this is that you would print the
discography out and bring it along with you to all of your favorite record
shops. I guarantee you that no one will have anything on this mega-list,
but at least you can act like you know more than those dorks behind the
counter. In order to get everything on the list though, you would probably
need a couple of thousand dollars. ;}

The next message you get from me will be the list of ALL Uwe Schmidt
releases. It's a lot of information to take in in one reading, so don't
strain your brain. A list of split-singles, AH samplers, compilation
appearances, and remixes will follow later on this week.

The only thing I couldn't fit into each entry was the call-numbers for
each release. I intentionally left out the track listings as well as any
notes in order to save space. A more detail-oriented and ultra-complete AH
discography will be ready by the end of this month. If anyone has any
suggestions on how to condense this further, please let me know (I've got
it set up to be only 74 characters wide for each line).

Please e-mail me directly with any additions/corrections/etc.

good job! here's my trainspotter's analysis:

this was also on CD single. I thought Rough Trade was a British label?

this was on the sublabel not the main label

I believe these are the same release except one is on CD and the other is
on 2x12" (not 12" ep) so you might want to list them together not
seperately to save space.

> 1 flextone 2xlp/ ger r.i. schmidt 1994
> test 2xlp/cd

did a test pressing of this ever really come out? I was under the
impression that since the artwork was in B&W and the record labels are
'relatively' blank that people thought it was a test pressing when it
wasn't. (?)

> hyper active cd jap daisy world schmidt/inoue 1996

> 2 12" jap daisy world schmidt/inoue 1996

should the 12" be listed seperately? Isn't it just the 2x12" vinyl version
of the CD as in Flextone and Dandy Jack listed above?

> 1 jet chamber cd ger fax sublabel schmidt/namlook 1995
> 2 jet chamber 2 cd ger fax sublabel schmidt/namlook 1996

these were both on the main FAX (PK) label not the sublabel. Hint!
Namlook collaborating with a German artist goes on the main label,
collaborations with artists outside of Germany go on the World sublabel
(PW) and if Namlook is not involved, it goes on the sublabel (PS).

Electronikkaa is not another 12" but the other side to Electronique.

> 1 secretary 12"/cds ger fax records schmidt/namlook 1993

I don't think FAX ever put out a CD single.

> The only thing I couldn't fit into each entry was the call-numbers

If this is to be a shopping list, I think the catalog numbers are more
important than say listing the composers. Accuracy in finding the correct
release is very important, especially for someone as obscure & hard to find
as Uwe :)

> (I've got it set up to be only 74 characters wide for each line).

80 characters is the standard length so I think you can safely increase the
columns up to 79 characters.

that's all for now...

I have only seen cosmic trousers on CD and a single 4 track 12" containing
tracks from the CD version. So it looks like the CD didnt get a full
release on vinyl and the 12" is taster for the CD. Someone will have to
confirm if they ever saw a cosmic trousers 2x12" set!!!

I too think the cat no's would be most valuable, epsecially when trying to
track stuff down in catalouges and stores databases.

It's on the German Rough Trade.

While there could be a double-LP for all I know, there definitely is a 12"
EP with a few tracks from the CD.

I have a copy w/o artwork and white labels (maybe with side #s). This is
what I'm trying to sell for $18 or so. Email me if interested.

Yep, I have it :)

I don't know what Rough Trade Germany had to do with Rough Trade UK in the
past. But UK went into bankruptcy a few years ago, while in Germany Rough
Trade was and still is one of the biggest independent distributor (they
distribute for example 4AD, WARP, R&S and Factory in Germany) with some own
labels (like OurChoice, on wich the above EP was released on)...

This was my first excursion into the world of Uwe (thanx for the rec
Brendan at DigUnd). Lots of rhythms, most of them danceable (some more
than others). Once again, as I am noticing about most Uwe material I
hear, the rhythms are what pulls me in. The different parts play off
each other and create a very dense field of ever changing patterns.
Matter, to me, is more of a straightforward electro piece than others I
have heard by Uwe, but well worth the price of a used copy. In fact, if
any of you are near or in Auburn, AL, I know there is a used copy in
Imaginary Records. Been there for over a year too.

I really have no idea if it's out yet... or the Japanese cd for that
matter. Too bad the Zappo-List is down right now, because we could ask
there.

Anyway, as far as what they are, I am the information I am basing
these entries on is from a post Hal Vx2 <halvx2@io.org> made at the
beginning of June:

Oh, and actually the release should read HIGHLY ACTIVE TEXTURE, and
not what I had previously written. I was thinking though that the acronym
for HAT might actually stand for Hosono Atom Tetsu. Why not?

Now I remember... ONGAKU is a collaboration between Uwe, Dj Ata, and
Heiko (of M/S/O). I wish they'd get together again and do some more stuff
- "Mihon" is a great record.

Has anyone heard either the SLOT or WEIRD SHIT records? These are
pretty much Uwe's first two aliases outside of LB (back in 1991), and I am
just curious to hear what he was doing back then that was different than
PORNOTANZ and LB.

Just a follow-up on this... the `Atom Heart' contribution to this
compilation is an excerpt of a track by JET CHAMBER off of [the second]

Speaking of compilations, has anyone seen or heard the ATOM HEART

MONO TM
Mono Trademark
Rather Interesting
CD
_________________________________________________________________

the perhaps allowable criticsm has been levied that _mono tradmeark_
is a somewhat, well, monochromatic recapitulation of many of atom
heart's most well-worn compositional concerns, offering little by way
of novelty and development. perhaps (and that's a _big_ perhaps),
but from where i'm standing it's good to see uwe homing in for a
meditation on one of the most important (and hardly well-understood,
if popular comment is to be believed) aspects of his compositional
palette; electro. while bandied about as if a listen or two to _the
man machine_ and a couple of egyptian lover tracks were sufficient to
pass comment, in fact electro represents something of the cornerstone
of a wide range of contemporary experimental electronic ("club")
music, from autechre to higher intelligence agency, spacetime
continuum to alec empire. it also represents a good 30-40 percent of
the influence to be gleaned from atom heart's oevre, and one whose
centrality has become more and more obvious with every release.
_mono trademark_, from the grafitti cover art to the opening speech
synthetics of _greetings from planet knowledge_ (and continuing on
through just about every track) is involved with exploring that
influence...in depth. it's to be heard not so much in the programming
or the arrangements (this ain't no boogie-down bootie shake electro),
but in the range of sounds involved: the telltale electronic breaks,
the sprangy 808 cowbells, the sharp q-tip attacks, the (faux?)
scratching, the thick basslines and goofy melodies, the stiff, split-
time hi-hat rhythms, and, of course, the hand-claps...oh, those
glorious handclaps, best expressed in the final moments of the last
track, "'e' is for electro"--"and you are stupid if you have not
sampled this clap"...that uwe felt compelled to pay tribute to a
style as influential on his own as electro has been is admirable.
and that that tribute is this enjoyable is only to be expected.

its quite hard, it builds and builds (4 to the floor beat building and

Now that I'm hitting other people up for reviews, I thought I'd post a few
of my own. These are things that I've just gotten, not necessarily the
latest things out.

H.A.T. "Tokyo, Frankfurt, New York" Rather Interesting RI037

If you liked earlier Rather Intersting releases, you will definately like
this one. Why? Because it sounds just about the same as about the last 3
or 4. Can you guess I'm starting to saturate on the Atom Heart cyber-
techno-jazzadelica sound? While there are planety of excellent moments,
even Tetsu Inoue and Haruomi Hosono can't drown out Atom Hearts influence
on this, who definately dominates the sound as producer, recording
engineering, and final mixdown engineer. Tetsu does put in some fine
ambient tweakiness and Hosono lays down the Y.M.O. trancey techno with his
patented bass lines, a lot of this is pretty similar to the last few RI
Atom Heart releases. A.H. might want to push these collaborations more, or
rerelease classics like "VSVN" or "Flextone". Don't get me wrong, I'm not
panning this. If you're new to the Rather Interesting label, I would say
this should be a must-have, since the production is top-notch, but I found
much of it a rehash of his previous stuff.

Oh well, that's all we have time for tonight.

Yeah... actually I am starting to notice this too. Even on the more
recent MONO TM cd (which I really really like) there are quite a few
`recycled' ideas - one of the tracks even reminds me of old LB. Then
again, it's probably just because he puts out at least one cd per month.
Compare this time two years ago with what's out now.

Maybe Uwe just needs to collaborate with new people who don't really
fit into the same electronica-bleep-bloop genre he does. I hate to say it,
but the whole SCHMIDT/SOL/INOUE/NAMLOOK clique has about reached full-
circle. Thank god for Lisa Carbon. An influx of new faces would be only
appropriate. But who?

Personally, I'd like to hear Uwe vs. Jack Dangers. Uwe vs. Mark Van
Hoen. Uwe vs. Richard James. Uwe vs. Chris Jeffs. Uwe vs. Michael Wells.
Uwe vs. Luke Vibert. Hell, some people we have NEVER even heard of before.

Kill the stagnation. More noise please.

None of them have a picture sleeve far as I know.
The vinyl is a little crackly in that test-pressing sort of way.

These have been played once to tape them, and I've since found them on CD.

Ok, I'm going to include the call-numbers in my final revision. I
think though that the composers being listed is also important in its own
way. I know there are quite a few people on this list who buy *only* the
Uwe Schmidt solo stuff, since there is so much out there. They'd probably
like to be able to scan the list and highlight only those projects as
`wants'. Also, it's good to know the collaborators because in looking for,
let's say "Plane" by +N, it might be filed under VICTOR SOL instead of ATOM
HEART in the record store. Yeah right - as if a record shop would
*actually* have either of those sections in the first place.

In my Pine, it only allows 74 characters on a line before it bumps the
rest down to the next line. I think quite a few other people also have
this problem. I'll figure something out...

...speaking of, I'll have the corrected grocery-list by the end of
this week. What a task!

Yay.

I've finally finished adding all of the coinciding call-numbers to the
`grocery list'. Also, I just got the newest version of Pine and I went in and
changed my screen length to 79 character across (instead of the previous 74).
So now there's a whole bunch more info on each line... it's a bit crowded at
times, but I'm sure it'll be just fine.

There are still a few missing entries here and there (call-numbers, etc),
so any additions or corrections would be greatly appreciated. In particular,
maybe some of you FAX-heads could verify the call-numbers for those releases,
and you LASSIGUE BENDTHAUS collectors could browse through the LB section with
a keen eye. Anything else?

If anyone wants to put this listing on one of their pages, or wishes to
include it in an article (or something) then that's fine. I'll be posting
additions to the `grocery list' a little later during August, such as remixes,
compilations, and whatever else is left over.

Oh, and don't get too depressed knowing how much AH there is out there...
just remember that all of this material has been done within the past five
years. Imagine if you got into AH/LB a couple of years from now. Geez.
