Wow.
I'm not sure exactly how I ended up on their mailing-list, but some
place called SYNAPTIC RECORDS just e-mailed me their latest `New Arrivals'
list. Upon reading through it, I about fell on my ass seeing the amount of
POD stuff they carry. Anyway, I've forwarded their post below (edited to
the relevant parts) - their e-mail/web addresses are also in the message if

"at the first sight, _mono trademark_, rather interesting's newest cd
release, seems to be a generic electro album, but after a few seconds
of listening you will find that it's more than that. in a highly
complex and abstract manner, electro, jazz, ambient, and other
undefined styles are merged into an astonishing image of rhythms,
harmonices, and space. starting with a quote "greetings from planet
knowledge" turns out to be more than a homage to the electro-
aesthetic and morphs into freestyle jazz, followed by "tag layer,"
"cruel change," "or the serious "e stands for electro," which are all
highly rhythmical, multilayered futuristic neo-electro tracks.
titles like "urbanative" or "inflatable rasta wig" perfectly balance
the album with mellow, smooth programming. _mono trademark_ is a

wise relating to either fax or RI. Pod is an absolute balistic power-acid
journey into sound. Listening to Datacide 1 on Pod compared to the RI and
Fax realeases of Datacide leaves one wondering if they are even the same

experimental often demandig frequent readjustment of bass and other

Hello one and all --
I just scored a copy of Tinned Music by I, from Modern Music. I think
their email address is something obvious like modernmusic@earthlink.net,
but don't quote me as I'm still half-asleep and in the middle of breakfast.
I've been lost in maniacal musical activity the last several days polishing
off the s/t for a video installation and have done nothing else, so a
review will be forthcoming. _Repetitive Digital Noise_ by I is possibly my
favorite AH release, so of course I'm quite looking forward to hearing this
one.
So this leaves my AH collection with 3 full-length holes (please don't get
me started on the 12" singles...): Datacide on FAX, Coeure Atomique on FAX,
and the elusive EE Surreal. And Brown. What burns me up is the FAX discs
trade hands for $60 and up among a group of FAX fanatics, some of whom even
hate Atom Heart's music but hoard the discs anyway. Any chance of a
repress of those?

Maybe I was lucky, I picked up Couer Atomique a few of months back no
problem, cheap too, and even better I managed to pick up Datacide a few of
months earlier, still at normal CD prices. The funny thing about the
Datacide CD was that it was always in this shop I used to go to while at
University a couple of years back. I was back up there early this year, and
visited the shop, and it the CD was STILL there, but this time I snapped it
up.

Yep, this is a sad situation. Datacide will only get repressed if the
demand is great, i.e. FAX is going to sell around 500 copies of the CD.
All the best,

While the FAX hounds do drive the prices up somewhat, I recently won
_Coeur_ _Atomique_ in Dave EAR/Rational's auction for $60, and I can assure
you that it was for the love of the artist, not the label. I saved up for
a while when I saw that auction coming, too. (And I'm lucky too, because I
wasn't willing to go any higher than that.)
What do you expect for a limited-to-500-worldwide out-of-print-for-years
CD? But I've managed to score _Orange_ for what I consider to be very
reasonable $25, and you can still get _Live_At_sel_i/s/c_ and _Softcore_
(and the two Jet Chambers) for around $20. Now if only I could find a
_Datacide_... that one will be ridiculous because it has Tetsu Inoue on it.
*sigh* Maybe some kind soul will tape it for me.
What's up with _Brown_ anyways? I thought the whole customs thing was over
with...?

While we're on the subject of full-length holes, anyone know if the Atomu

passed it up as there was no track-list and I'd blown a load on other stuff

Subject: (mother) I, Tinned Music
The _Tinned Music_ CD is similar to the previous _Repetetive Digital
Noise_. Overall _Tinned Music_ sounds like it could be the tracks that
didn't make it onto the first -I- disc. The approach is a bit like VSVN
-- tracks assembled from short, repeating fragments -- but more trance-like
and minimal. When it really works, the results can be stunning, as on most
of the 1st CD, and the 1st 4 tracks of this one. However the CD contains
10 tracks, and most of the rest are a bit paint-by-numbers by comparison.
In music this minimal and beat-oriented, much of the appeal comes from the
momentum of the individual lines, reinforced by the way they interlock and
intertwine. The tracks after the 4th just don't gel quite as nicely.
_Repetetive Digital Noise_ also features more timbral tweaking, which
contibutes to the disc's strength. As such, _Tinned Music_ by comparison
is also a bit monochromatic.
5/10 on the relative scale, which rates a release compared to other work by
the same artist. Thus a 5 by Atom Heart might be a 7 for someone else.
BTW, I'd rank Silver Sound, VSVN and Repetetive Digital Noise at 9/10,
possibly even 10/10 in a couple years. I just don't want to be too
critical without saying anything positive to give balance.

New Release on Fax out this week..... available from fax label usa see the
emc home page at www.sirius.com/~faxlabel/emc.html
Electronic Music Center
(Pete Namlook)
The Electronic Music Center is a new organization founded by Pete Namlook
in order to share knowledge, methods and secrets in electronic music. Our
aim is to enhance the global electronic music movement by instructing,
training and helping interested musicians on their way to become
professional artists. Not only is musical knowledge part of our program but
also answering basic questions like how to release your first record on
your own without help from any third party. Guest lectureres will be David
Moufang (Source Records, KM20), Atom Heart (Rather Interesting) and others.
For more information on EMC, get in contact with Christian Thier (DJ Criss)
FAX/Phone +49-6039-45406 or visit the EMC home page. Enrollment for the new
season begins soon.
The different titles of the tracks are self-explanatory, i.e. the task on
Vocal Atoms was to construct a rhythmic piece from 95% self constructed
vocal samples (Tetsu Inoue talking) or to transfer a Baroque piece to
electronic instruments by using the original score (Ur-text) without
losing the emotional impact and the balance of the original instrumentation
(church organ). The Subharmonic Passage is a short piece by P.N. which
shows the different harmonic structure of the subharmonic chords that
consist of natural tones only as opposed to the purely mathematical
interpolated and constructed "well tempered" tones of the western world.
The only musician who uses this harmonic structure to its perfection is
Oskar Sala who is 86 years old - My Fascinating Instrument on FAX and
Subharmonische Mixturen (release date: Fall 1996).
New courses at EMC start the first week in March, June and September and
last either from Monday to Thursday or Friday to Sunday. There will be a
release of the result from the different workgroups. Income of the CD will
be shared and information about the participants will be provided.

Rather interesting presents +N - Built
The CD >built< from the meanwhile well established project >+N< is
presented as Rather Interestings release RI039. On more than 70 minutes
>+N< offers us a thrilling yet humourous travel into their vision of sound
as we already know it from their two previous releases on Geometrik and Fax
records. Re-inventing as well as absorbing and denying the term
>krautrock<, this CD could be seen as a statement of the new German
avantgarde; beautiful atmospheric tracks like >watson< or >lo db< are
confronted with programmings such as the jungelish >wook danube< or the
cold >elektron<. Produced by Atom Heart and Victor Sol from Barcelona
(known from his various releases on Fax, Hypnotism, Geometrik and others)
>built< steps into a new, digital aera of electronic sound that does not
accept the established parameters of todays music.

...review to follow (yeah, yeah), but those who've recently docked uwe for
repeating himself should be excited to hear new ground is once again being
explored with this disc. not entirely new techniques, mind you, and uwe's
sound is entirely intact, but _built_ finds those techniques refined and
put to use in more subtle, entirely novel ways, combining, alternately,
with extended passages of burbling white noise, quirky blasts of electronic
weirdness, and frenetic explosions of rhythm and percussion on the whole
much more measured and varied than recent and past releases such as _mono
tm_ and _machine paisley_. often, themes appear and disappear in the space
of 30 seconds or so, never to be revisited, while other tracks stretch
compositions out to more substantial lengths, refusing, still, to linger
too long on any one compositional idea. the metaphor at work in the
tracklisting appears to be that of ascending the staircase of an apartment
building, with the quirks and idiosyncrasies of the building's various
inhabitants determining the character and flair of the experience, and the
concept holds very well in the music...something like the weird, nomadic
digital fuzz of _masters of psychedelic ambience_ combined with an even
freakier free-jazz/electrojungle vibe similar to his more recent solo work.
the most "out" experimental ambient/jazz i've heard from him in ages,
leading me to believe he should work with victor more often...
uh, get it (teep)...

All you need is a master tape, a couple or three thousand dollars, work
your ass off to promote your recording, deal with distributors and stores
who won't pay you... Releasing a record is easy -- making people aware of
it, getting distribution, getting paid for copies that sell...that's the
trick.
I've been through this with a cassette a few years ago...
