Modern Music in Baltimore has it for $10.99. I'm glad I bought the 12" as
the remixes by Ian Pooley and Lisa Carbon are quite nice too. Is the
_shellglove_ album out yet? Anyone see or hear it yet?

P.S - Datacide's _Ondas_ is wonderful BTW.
Will no doubt be on my favorites for '96.

I'll second those and put in a strong recommendation for the new Haujobb cd
called _Solutions for a Small Planet_. it's very good intelligent electro-
industrial. that's saying something considering that i'd rarely put
intelligent and electro-industrial in the same sentence. and besides their
obvious Lassigue Bendthaus influence, they list a few other interesting
influences like cevin cey, Coil, Photek, Locust, Metalheadz, etc... check
it out if you like electro-industrial kind of stuff. hopefully this isn't
too off topic. they have been known to sample some of Uwe's sounds after
all.

I'll third this. I never buy EBM/industrial dance of any kind these days
(except FLA now and then to scratch that nostalgia itch), but I am VERY
impressed by "Solutions for a Small Planet". I think it's fair to say that
even if you aren't in the least bit interested in the industrial scene
you'll find a lot to be happy about on this one - it stays away from most
of the genre's cliches and, in fact, is very original in most respects.

So.

The following was on the Ambient list over the weekend. Even though
I'm not at all well-versed in the world of Tetsu, I find it interesting
reading about the opinions of the `other' musicians involved in an AH-

Spoke to Tetsu Inoue last week; he was in town recording with Atom Heart
and Hosono again. Good news for all who liked HAT; more lounge-mondo-jazz-
ambience due soon. Being a fan of his Ambient-Otaku/Organic Cloud/Shades
Of Orion/Zenith phase, it was interesting to hear Tetsu describe those as
highly emotional works, in contrast to what he's doing now, the lounge
stuff, which he described as being absent of emotion -- he couldn't really
form what he wanted to say, but that was the gist of it. So Organic Cloud
fans will have to sit tight until he's gotten the lounge bug out of his
system, I guess.

Also interesting to note that when I praised his work with Namlook on 2350
Broadway 3 , he couldn't remember the passage I was referring to -- he
claims not to have listened to the piece since he recorded it!!!! He also
said that he really has no idea which of his works is most loved -- I
suggested "Organic Cloud", but he said that personally, he's most pleased
with "World Receiver".

Ciao,

GIO

yeah, on two seperate occasions he told me he thought "organic cloud" was
"alright, not great," recorded too quickly and sat on by namlook for more
than a year. he was very surprised that anyone could think it his best
work (same goes for "2350 broadway 1"). this was just following the release
of "slow and low," which he went on to say he thought came closest to what
he was trying to achieve (although what he was trying to achieve with that
album was quite different than with others), and since he's now claiming
"world receiver" as his best work, i think it's safe to say he's on the
whole a pretty restless artist (a boon, imho, for those willing to follow
him where he goes)...oh, he did also say he thought th masters of
psychedelic ambiance cd was among his best (and this was over a year after
it was released), so i guess there's the exception etc.

gio, did he happen to mention when "instant replay" (his album with jonah
sharp on emi) would be released? also, since he was over their with uwe to
help promote "hat," has the daisy world reissue been released? and, perhaps
more importantly, is there vinyl?

Tetsu just returned from Japan and we spoke last night. I asked him about
Time^2 and he hasn't heard this yet either. He said he was also working
with Atom Heart at the time finishing up Datacide - Ondas on Rather
Interesting. This album has been in the works for the better part of this
year. I remember hearing an early version of it many months ago.

Knowing that Namlook prefers to record spontaneously, I figured that partly
explains why he hasn't heard these albums. Tetsu seems to normally be very
meticulous about his work. He strives for perfection which doesn't mean
there's anything wrong with spontinaeity. I'm sure he sees the beauty in
it and obviously he's managed to contribute to some masterpieces. Besides,
he doesn't really listen to music as he largely prefers to spend his time
making it.

Heh.

I haven't heard a song this wonderful in such a long while. Tetsu and
Uwe (presumeably) approach their deity, chant the words `Holy Microwave',
insert the sacrifice, close the door, the venting of radioactive perticles
begins... and seven seconds later you have:

Frozen Beef (?), in the microwave.
Fried Chicken, in the microwave.
(blah blah) (?), in the microwave.
Pasta, in the microwave.

And then you hear all of the little chirping birds and other little
fuzzy warm animals (leftovers from "Second Nature") that have been/will be
nuked and consumed. Ritualistic machine-worship is where it's at (yeah,
baby). Either that, or this is a soundtrack for some twisted Mark Pauline
movie.

So who's doin' the singing? I'd say Uwe. If so, it's been a
loooooooong time since "Render". Good to hear him again. ;}

Thankfully Atom Heart gets some control of the decks this time, as this
recording is an immense improvement over last year's mediocre Jet Chamber.
Easily the best track on the disc, "Inner Rotation" allows Atom Heart to
slather on layers of dark, bleepy, bass heavy percussion while Namlook
compliments the beats with his trademark dark and spooky melody. The music
evolves and grows; an incredible piece of electronic work oozing with
intelligent sequencing and slick production. Then enter "Calm Box,"
lengthy chillout session providing the listener with a chance to regain
consciousness before the second bombardment of Atom Heart's trademark
percussion in "Outer Rotation." This time the beats are harder, faster,
quirkier and more spontaneous then before. In all, "Jet Chamber" is a well
crafted piece of electronic music, and worthy of repeated listenings.

(I ripped this from my web page; posted on IDM when it JC2 came out)

Split Wide is a simply wonderful 30 minute track on Jet Chamber 1 that
makes the disc worth purchasing for this track alone. Both Jet Chambers
are pretty necessary. :)

It's a nice track, and very pretty I should add... the format is very
different from Jet Chamber 2, and I prefer the sequel... Jet Chamber 1 is
just too vague-sounding; it's hard to put a finger on it...

inside the unit while turning the microwave on for about 7 seconds.

but after mike & rich, _das ist eine groovybeat, ja?_, and now that insipid
gary moscheles record, it would seem the world is nearing packed-to-the-
gills with not-very-interesting takes on lounge-jazz-electro. so, instead
of moaning about how this or that record sucks, or how this or that record
is sub-par, i'll offer a more constructive (at least, for the end user)
form of criticism by way of a list of alternate records in a similar vein
that i think just bury the likes of the above. consider it a collection of
tracks for those who agree to disagree:

1. the last three or four cheap 12"s ("showroom recordings #2," sokol's
"mean clown welcome," "gerard deluxe" by gerard potuznik, etc.).
rhythmically complex, with vibes, double-bass, traps, etc. seamlessly
fused with dense, often quite musical percussion arrangments similar to
plug, vert, etc., but with not nearly the cheese and tons of breaks,
diversions, and out-and-out bizarre tangents. some of the tracks on
these records even *sound* like their being played in real-time by a
band, and offer a glimpse of what will likely become the future
integration of live instruments and electronics on the most outbound of
combinations...

2. atom heart. duh. i'll name _ondas_--uwe's second record with tetsu inoue
as datacide--for more straight-ahead electro-jazz (they call it _future
lounge_ on the sleeve), as well as its predecessors _built_ (recorded
with victor sol under the name +n) and _brown_ (the long lost blank-
sleeve customs foiler!). these record are all over the place
stylistically, but wherever the go its usually with a clever smirk in
its pocket, with tracks bubbling up with rhumba and salsa rhythms, mid-
tempo claves, loads of latin percussion, etc. both are on rather
interesting, as well as being same.

3. mung's "places" ep (on blue planet, plan2). this ep could be a full-on
record for how satisfied you feel after listening to it. another style-
skipper, but everything is fitted together so perfect you never notice
you started at jungle, edged over downbeat breaks, and worked on through
supafunk electro-boogie, be-bop, and jazzy electronica. and that's just
the first track! (see also: the bowling green's "mettle" ep.)

innovative? i hear this word tossed around with impunity on this list, and
am continually dismayed to see it applied to so many records which lack
even the remotest justification for its use. and especially in the face of
so much good music being released that's never even mentioned here...

ok, my apologies for any bent egos. back to the regularly scheduled hero
worship...

Uh, "ondas" is there 4th full-length together isn't it? Datacide 1 was on
Pod, 2 on Fax, "Flowerhead" on RI/Asphodel.

I've never hear the Pod or Fax releases, so I don't know for sure if they

more electro-accoustic ambience...

On some parts of the song you can mess with the left and right
channels to where there's only the chirping/etc (ala "Second Nature") on
one side, while the music itself is on the other. Very strange effect when
played as a whole. My cats kept popping up on top and dodging underneath
the furniture looking for the phantom birds. Tweet tweet.

...instrument? Since when is an "Air-Trumpet" and instrument? It
sounds like someone's just making the noises with their mouth. Here,
listen: Brrrrmpt Brrrrmpt Brrrrmpt! See, I can do it too. ;}

Oh, and what's up with the Brian Wilson/Beach Boys references on the
album...

...at the very beginning of "Stereo Kiss", the speaker opens with:
"The time is now one a.m. - Brian is unable to snap his fingers.". Also,
track #5 is entitled "Onsurf (Hello Mr. Wilson!)". And of course there's
the guy surfing on the back sleeve, and the topless sunbather with sine
waves (I think) rolling across the contours of her backside.

I've just got to say that when I first heard this album, I didn't
really like it that much. Now I can't get it out of my cd player. Between
"Brown", "Built", and "Ondas" I don't know which one I like better.
Regardless, I have been very very impressed with each progressive R.I.

It was released on both vinyl and cd. I know this because a friend of mine
was selling both versions a couple of summers ago. What I'd like to know
is, how come everyone likes Flextone so much and why do some people think
it's the best RI release? I mean, it's okay, but releases like Datacide
"Flowerhead" are much better imo. Of course I never got around to buying
Flextone because I wasn't that impressed with it when i listened to it, so
maybe now I'm regretting my decision since everyone seems to love it so
much for whatever reason. Maybe i just needed to spend more time with it?

RI025 "VSVN" (Very Synthetic Virtual Noise, NASA hasn't complained yet)

is also a unique album itself. Starts out with quasi-minimal-trancey-
yet-sparse-house track and then goes into aliens communicating with
toddlers with left & right speaker separation to wierd layered lowride drum
sequence demonstration type stuff. All with discrete Atom Heart humor...

Another excellent higher-bmp dark trancey type RI release is B^2, which
only has 2 25-35 minute tracks on it.

Flextone is also one of my favorites. I love it because it's super funky
and not as complicated and over-intelligent as some of the later things
(although I love those too, but on a more clinical and technical level.)

This release on Metropolis (US) is a very big and imposing pile of
industrial techno. That doesn't say much to distinguish it from too many
other CDs, but I can compare it favorably with Lassigue Bendthaus' "Cloned"
and "Matter". It's a bit cleaner, more refined, less grungy and shifts
through a spectrum of industrial genres, always keeping the beat more
innovative than 75% of button pushers who release records, and sometimes
more than 90%. Others may certainly disagree.

Industrial jungle isn't as wack as I would expect, in their capable hands,
that is.

As with anything, listen first. You'd probably be checking out Metropolis
stuff already if you liked the above-mentioned Schmidtwerken. Alas, my
mouth fell open and I had to say something.

Take care.

Solutions for a Small planet has got to be one of the most interesting and
unique records to come out this year. It really breathes some life in the
dying carcass that is industrial. Lots of quick second edits, great breaks,
and the vocals even work in the context of the tracks. Definately an album
worht checking out. The closest comparision that I can come up with is
Lassique's Cloned or to a lesser degree THD's outside in.

T.H.D. is Total Harmonic Distortion, signed to Hard/Cleopatra Records. See
review in Sonic Boom at http://www.sonic-boom.com/review/thd-2.html (BTW,
Sonic Boom recently interviewed me as well which may also warrent a peek...

For all you Connections fans, Outside In (THD's latest album) is also a
registered MACOS product. MACOS, as you may know, was co-founded by Uwe
Schmidt.

THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) are a Pennsylvania duo who've recorded two
albums for Hard records. The second of these, _Outside In_, was strongly
influenced by Lassigue Bendthaus (although they manage to find their own
sound; it's not a rote copy). Highly recommended.

Went through the dust and came to the conclusion that these cds+ a few
vinyl were not being played. Why not find better homes. Most are imports
and some are ltd/out of print. The majority are experimental/Advant Garde/

knowledge? In the few cases, correct me if I'm way out there. Some are

Heya.

If you're on the IDM list, you're probably voting in the "Best Of
1996" polls. So, I thought it might be a good idea for everyone on mother
(who is also subscribed to IDM, or not) to cast votes for some of Uwe
Schmidt's albums. Hey, I mean he's released about nine full-length cds
this year alone (collaborations and/or solo), so it would be a shame not to
see him in at least the top three albums of the year, right?

Anyway, here would be the choices of AH/related albums released in
1996:
"Polyester" by THE LISA CARBON TRIO
"Jet Chamber 2" by JET CHAMBER
"Shellglove" by ATOM HEART
"Brown" by BROWN
"Mono Tm" by MONO TRADEMARK
"Dandy Jack & The Cosmic Trousers" by DANDY JACK
"Highly Active Texture" by HAT
"Machine Paisley" by MACHINE PAISLEY
"Built" by +N

So besides the re-issuances of "Second Nature" and "Flowerhead" (which
wouldn't really count for 1996), did I miss any?

Oh, and for the "Best Compilation" section I'm going to vote for "Real
Intelligence 2".

If nothing else, you ought to vote for Uwe Schmidt as putting out the
most consitent and best quality material for this year. And hey... why not
Rather Interesting as the best label?

Below is a copy of the form you would need to fill out. Send it to

} "Polyester" by THE LISA CARBON TRIO
} "Jet Chamber 2" by JET CHAMBER
} "Shellglove" by ATOM HEART
} "Brown" by BROWN
} "Mono Tm" by MONO TRADEMARK
} "Dandy Jack & The Cosmic Trousers" by DANDY JACK
} "Highly Active Texture" by HAT
} "Machine Paisley" by MACHINE PAISLEY
} "Built" by +N
}
} So besides the re-releases of "Second Nature" and "Flowerhead"
) (which wouldn't really count for 1996), did I miss any?

Damn. I voted for _Second Nature_ for the top ambient album of 1996. I
figured it came out in '96 since I came upon it only this year released on
SubMeta. When was the original release date? Maybe they'll let this one
slip through anyway.... poop.

} Oh, and for the "Best Compilation" section I'm going to vote for
} "Real Intelligence 2".

I just got this baby myself. I would have voted for it also, but it
seemed too new to get much of a representation in the polls. However, I
still think it is a really strong comp. Now I really want to pick up
_Brown_ (I loved the remark in the liner notes about U.S. customs taking
their job so seriously, by the way.) Instead, I went with the Warp
_Blechsdottir_ comp... don't hurt me.

} If nothing else, you ought to vote for Uwe Schmidt as putting out
) the most consitent and best quality material for this year. And hey...
) why not Rather Interesting as the best label?

Yep. I went with Uwe for consistent quality in '96. Uwe's our man! I
decided to be patriotic and vote for Astralwerks for best label, though --
Soul Oddity, Spacetime Continuum (full length and remixes), FSOL, Werks
Like a 12" comp, etc... Things are really improving over in that camp.
However, Rather Interesting and Skam are my other favorites.

} Come on guys! Let's totally flub this poll up with our entries.

Yeah, get your votes in by tomorrow before it's too late! Uwe shall
conquer Mike and Rich!!! Jeez, what's gotten into me? I haven't even had
any rum balls yet.

} Actually, maybe we oughta have our own poll as well...

I like that idea too. I'd like to see the more eclectic choices that we'd
come up with. Anyone up for creating one? Chris?

Has anyone located one of these yet?

I've seen the "Apart" 12", but passed on it in favor of the originally-
promised CDS (which I've yet to see).

Did he do some of the best material this year? Yeah.

Most consistent? Erm, no.

Consistent & prolific are damn-near impossible to do at the same time.

Hi all,

I just wanted to give an update on the MACOS site, and the update is....
still nothing. I'm waiting to receive some additional information from
some people to offered web space. Just to let you know, the MACOS site at
http://www.io.org/~macos will be deactivated after December 31. I will
post the new URL here first, once I get any further. Thanks for your
support throughout our troubles here.

Also, happy holidays and New Years. Wishing the best for everyone for the
new year.

Best regards,

Hal.

How does one get on the IDM list? Is it a "bulk" list or like this one?

Ok.

Well, Uwe didn't get enough nominations to be in the `Album Of The
Year' category (boo hoo... what about "Ondas?), or R.I. as even `Label Of
The Year' (it's all your fault Eric). But amazingly enough the "Real
Intelligence 2" release was nominated as one of the choices for
`Compilation Of The Year', *and* Uwe Schmidt does indeed appear in the
category for `Artist Of The Year'!

Anyway, as this is the final round of voting (the first was for
nominations only) I implore you all... vote for "Real Intelligence 2" and
"Uwe Schmidt". (Yeah Will, anyone can I would imagine - even if they're
not on IDM.) ;}

To do so, forward the message below to the following address with the
word "POLL" in the subject header. Just delete the entries you do not want
to vote on under each heading, and if you do not wish to vote on any of the
listed selections just leave the `no vote' choice. Oh, and everything
needs to be in by noon Pacific time on December 31st:

Chimp.

Here's a super-dated interview with uwe Schmidt from an obscure U.S.
industro-zine called _For Crying Out Loud The Electronic Beat Zine_. This
particular issue (it's actually the very first) is the one listed in the LB
discography which includes the one or two exclusive LB mixes.

The magazine itself is pretty much just a bunch of grainy photocopied
standard letter-sized sheets all stapled together. Inside are featured
quite a few interviews as well as some reviews and copies of press
releases, etc. Your typical zine I guess.

Anyway, the below interview was condcted around the time "Cloned" was
just about to be released, and right as Uwe had left Parade Amoureuse.
I've typed it up here for all to (re-)read... run-on sentences, bad
grammar, generic dialogue, and all. Dig it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

L A S S I G U E B E N D T H A U S I N T E R V I E W

FCOL: How did Lassigue Bendthaus start up?

LB: Since '85 I was a member of Frankfurt's band "Pornotanz", (a three
person project) but we split in '87. I found my music easier to be
done alone, so I started with Lassigue Bendthaus in '87, to music I
came through drumming, I'm originally a drummer but my interest in
machines and music computers lead me to my first rhythm-machine in
'85. That's been the start.

FCOL: Since you started in 1987, what direction have you taken in creating
your music now?

LB: Meanwhile I'm much more into collaborating and experimenting than in
the very first days. The equipment grew, also the musical
understanding. In '87 I only had an old rhythm-box recording at home
on a four track mostly alone. Now I'm pending between studios and
working with a lot of different people.

FCOL: Are there any bands that influenced or helped create the sounds of
your work?

LB: Almost everything I hear has an influence on me.

FCOL: On the release "Matter", did the album come from a single concept or
was it a compilation that was done over a period of time?

LB: "Matter" had a very strict concept, so every song has its position on
the album. But recording this album took us over a year so for some
ears it doesn't sound like a "concept" thing.

FCOL: When you recorded "Matter", did you anticipate that you would be
playing live?

LB: For sure I had the idea of playing live but at that time I didn't
have a record contract or anything like this, so thoughts like these
were far away. For that reason, I concentrated on the recording
itself although the complexity of "Matter" prevents it's presentation
on a stage (if you wanna "play live"!).

FCOL: For your live show, what would people who haven't seen Lassigue
expect? Any visuals?

LB: For Lassigue Bendthaus I'm right now working on a live concept.
Visuals are very important, movement, acceleration. I had the chance
to show a video, that will also be shown in the regular live show, on
a festival in Florence Italy, together with Clock DVA and Pankow, and
also in Geneva Switzerland. It was kind of test, checking the
audience. I was very satisfied.

FCOL: Tell us about your newest release "Cloned".

LB: Well, "Cloned" was inspired by a French sociologist called Jean
Baudrillard and his writings. "Cloning" is one of his main words.
It means duplicating in the field of biology/technological
information networks and society. These three aspects are reflected
on "Cloned". For that reason I was cloning the music too: cutting,
decomposing, composing using the same information again. This record
is a little bit like a fractal zoom in and you find the same image
that you come from.

FCOL: Are there any side projects that you're working on?

LB: I'm also very interested in house music and all its hybrids, so I'm
producing some stuff under different pseudonyms on different labels.
I'm also producer for some labels here in Frankfurt. Being in the
studio with different artists, producing. Another pseudonym of mine
is "Atom Heart" who is doing techno/house stuff, dance floor etc.

FCOL: How would you compare American electronic/industrial type bands to
those in Germany?

LB: First of all the influences from the metal-side are a lot bigger in
America, Europe is cleaner (when it's techno). Somehow American
techno is more like rock, it often has this "headbanging" attitude to
me.

FCOL: How about some background on the record label Parade Amoureuse?

LB: I left Parade Amoureuse this month, so there is no information about
this label from March on. I'm on Contempo Records in Italy.

FCOL: What do you see in the future for Lassigue Bendthaus?

LB: Now that I got more support from the label, I hope to do a tour soon,
maybe a U.S. tour too. Some collaborations with other bands are in
planning, etc. I hope everything is getting bigger. Also the next
album (for '93) is ready (in my head), so accelerating is the future.

LASSIGUE BENDTHAUS
MATTER
60 minutes

Don't ask who is Lassigue Bendthaus. Just imbed this name into your head
as one of the best electronic techno bands around. Characterized by its
highly complex sequence and rhythm structures. This one-man band from
Germany has created more of an electronic technoart with his music, as his
1991 release "Matter" is based upon a concept of having each track refer to
another intending "Matter" to be a hermetic reflection about the
relationship between perception, nature, science, technology and labour.
"Matter" reminds of bits of information reaching every person living in a
world where "voices of telecom pronounce how senses work". "Matter" does
not have one weak track on the 10 song album so if you're looking for
substance in your music that is the best around. Coming soon in a new
double LP/CD called "Cloned". Full release list is here.

This is yet another fine release from New Zone. Though this has been heard

style with female speech somewhat similar to Lords Of Acid but done with a
little more thought. more is likely to be heard from Pornotanz in the
future.

Actually, I have a few other interviews that I would be able to transcribe

for Zoth Ommog which has a very strict timeline, plus some production work
on another album, so I won't be able to transcribe it until sometime late
January (possibly February). There is also one catch... and that is....
the interviews are in Dutch. Anyone wanna translate them? I haven't been
able to fully understand them yet either. Oh well.

Whoops... I temporarly changed it to defeat some software time expiries and
forgot the change it back. Thanks. About Uwe, he's off vacationing for
the holidays. (I believe he said Australia) and will be back in the next
couple weeks.

Happy new years everyone! We should have a contest on guessing the total
number of releases Uwe will come out with for this year. Last I heard, he
actually lost count, but my guess for this upcoming year is 41 releases.
This includes all albums produced, remixes, and compilation inclusions,
etc. (basically the same as what you'd find on the infamous Atom Heart
release list). Any other guesses?

Hal.
