I heard from him a few weeks ago, at which time he said he'd be away in
Australia and New Zealand, back in February, and then moving to Santiago de
Chile perhaps a month later.

He says his current musical interests are mainly Latin, jazz, and other
mellow things he figures I probably wouldn't like. (But there's a big
difference between what I currently seek out and what I would like.)

Anyway, please post if you get a hold of _Shellglove_ or a CDS for "Apart".

how typical is this album (Recent Programmings/Semaphore 35137-422) of Atom
Heart's work. i'm a newcomer to AH, but this LP is just brilliant! AH joins
the ranks of RDJ and Ishii as an IDM artist who has a style which can't be
broken down into "x" meets "y" meets "z" by way of "a1".

but i can still try! :)

_Shellglove_ sounds like Black Dog Productions (in their heyday) with
Germ's knack for tasty f'ed-up breakbeat loops (in other words... tres
GPR!), Ninja Tunes' never-fail gift for deeply satisfying headz-y grooves
("Cabasa Lounge") ,and a draught of Bern'd Friedmann's Electro-spasm
noises. this album sounds like Nonplace Urban Field, actually. but
"Plastique" and "Nature Bypass Trilogy" are the sort of fluxed-up tonal
minimalism you'd expect from Basic Channel or Disko-B. 'Gary Moscheles'
will weep when he hears "Marimba Suave" and probably throw in the musical
towel for good. and "Splendour Trash" is just friggin' incredible!

_Shellglove_ has to be one of the best of '96 ... if it *is* a '96 release.

i'm hooked! which AH album(s) should i try next?

i know that AH is a regular topic of discussion here, but nobody hs
mentioned this record - or the "Apart" EP, with a ballistic Ian Pooley mix,
a Herbert mix which is just sublime, and a lounge-jazz mix from Lisa
Carbon.

are these CDs officially 'out' yet?

i got the two cds from Mark @ incoming! ... who got them from Bern'd
Friedmann who got them directly from Uwe ... who ate the cat that ate the
rat that ate the malt that lay in the house that Jack built. so i don't
know how that helps...

but i guess you've answered my question about whether or not they've been
officially released.

MEGO just started an online mail-order service for many small European
labels (Cheap, Profan, Pharma, Source, etc, etc) so maybe they can help.

this is potentially very good news for us stateside folks as dutch-east in
new york has a domestic distribution deal with mego (which means you
shouldn't be paying import prices for mego stuff!). at present i have no
idea if that deal extends to the various labels mentioned above
(ohpleaseohpleaseohplease), but if you want it to, i suggest emailing
dutch-east and requesting them to get on it. their address is:

what, are you joking? this is the atom heart list! you can't live without
_any_ of it!!!

seriously tho...my faves are:

semiacoustic nature (ri)
flowerhead (datacide) (ri)
mu (masters of psychedelic ambiance) (ri)
silver sound 60 (ri)
hat (ri)
mono tm (ri)
built (+n) (ri)
polyester (lisa carbon trio) (rephlex)
jet chamber 1 (fax)
amp (fax) (actually dandy jack, but what the hey...)

but if you want a really good overview, go for the two _real intelligence_
comps. they're a great road map through the vast rather interesting
territory, and since most releases have something like a common sound
throughout, you can get a sense of which you're apt to like best...

also, haven't heard _dandy jack and the plastic woman_ yet, but i have, er,
high hopes (and i hope he got the fotf out of his system on the last
one...). i would also recommend the recent elfish echo (_sato yumiko_,
km20) and bisk (_time_, sub rosa) releases for hardcore fans of atom heart.
polyrythmic electro-jazz madness...yeah, yeah, like a broken with those
two, i know...

now to track down that _shellglove_ (bdp, nuf, _and_ ishii?! man...)

Happy New Year to all!
----------------------

Just before Christmas Uwe Schmidt was in Australia as part of the Beauty
Forward tour along with Bernd Friedmann and Black Lung. They played in
Sydney at Kinselas, a popular nightclub on Taylor Square.

Uwe was meant to appear on Thursdat night to play alongside Friedmann and
Thrussel but couldn't make it apparently because of a throat complaint
which had to be operated on that night. Nevertheless the set the other two
played together ranging from atmosphere to robotic funk to jungle was quite
good. It was improved all the more by my being stoned :]

The Man made it the next night when they each played their own set
interspersed with DJing from the Sub Bass Snarl duo The DJs started the
night off with a jungle set which was nice for letting me hear a track off
the Quoite album (track4) played loud over a big system (even it had
trouble coping with Mick Harris' bass tones!) but I could've done with a
bit of change from fast breaks.

This was was followed by Drome. Bernd Friedmann began by announcing that
his set was going to be made of sounds from six CDs prepared for live
mixing (he also had a pedal of some sort): this honesty is a change from
"performers" who (so it seems) just whack on a DAT or two and pretend to be
playing live. IMO this was the most satisfying set of the night. Can
someone ID his d'n'b track for me please? It's quite recognisable. I think
I'll be looking into more of his stuff.

Afterwards came David Thrussel in Black Lung mode. His set started off with
some nice sound-scapes and there were some nice sounds and effects
throughout the set but I'm afraid he lost me with the acidic/industrial
Hardcore vibe (BTW 'Doof' or hard acid/goa techno is pretty much standard
fare at local underground events or 'doofs'; I'm tired of it). The crowd
loved it, however, and the dance-floor was packed and bouncing.

When Black Lung finished and the club emptied a little (the Gothic
contingent having retired for the night), Atom Heart eventually came on.
He played a set consisting of patches (I think) improvised on his Akai.
There were shades of HAT, Brown, Mono and some other stuff I didn't
recognise; in other words it veered from Electro-ish "doodles", some
House-y rhythms and some Latin motifs all embroidered with typical Schmidt
panache :) The set ended abrubtly after four pieces (which seemed to end
somewhat abruptly themselves) and he exited right away stage left. It
seemed to me that he wasn't too impressed with the proceedings, but my
friend who was standing much closer says that he appeared to be having
trouble with his Akai all through the set and that the end of the last
track seemed to come as a bit of a suprise to Uwe himself (with finger
poised over the keypad - !).

At the door I bought for A$10 a tape of Atom Heart's Live PA on his last
tour of Australia (contact: http://www.usyd.edu.au/~sfraser/cat/ for more
info). Also for sale in the shops is a Beauty Forward tour CD which
contains some exclusive remixes by Atom Heart and Bernd Friedmann (remixes
of their own material - I think I saw some Apart tracks) and some Black
Lung tracks from other releases.

Oh yeah - most definitely. You know though... the first time I ever
heard "Experimental Post Techno Swing" (aka "Stereococktail") I absolutely
hated it. Thought it was crap. Too bizarre for me.

I left it sitting in with the rest of my discs forever before I even
picked it up again to give it another try. In the meantime I was absorbing
the SILVER SOUND, BASS, and the newest LISA CARBON TRIO discs. I guess I
had to work backwards to appreciate the above album fully.

are lisa carbon projects. i do, however, recommend all of them

It's on Helix^2, a new Sydney label, which has also put a couple of Black
Lung releases. It is the tour CD for the Beauty Forward tour with Atom
Heart, Drome, and Black lung (as recently reviewed here recently by

Subject: (mother) RI compilation #1 and a good amplifier + loudspeakers =
unique !

By suggestion of Cristopher Miller I'll begin my "active participation"
with something I discovered on RI compilation vol.1

I can't seem to remember any record who has left such an impression in me.

I have a reasonably good hi-fi equipment. A Denon amplifier, and Castle
loudspeakers (UK), etc.

It's not the best thing in the world but it's far more better than your
regular Sony stereo. (And yes, I do have one :-)

The difference I get is in the frequency response, and in the purity/
clarity of the sound. A larger spectrum of frequencies can be played
without distortion and of course your ear can notice the most unnoticeable
sounds.

I think the mastering of the record is unbelieavable. The second track
(elevator music), when played at a "reasonable" volume in my equipment
literally eats all other frequencies. i.e. : If you try to speak you aren't
heard. The bass frequencies on the record destroy all other frequencies. I
had never bought a record such as this.

The sound isn't "that loud" :-) but everything in the room vibrates and the
bass frequencies can really disturb you. I've even felt a bit nauseous
once.

Any comments ?

Could anyone brief me on RI compilation vol. 2 ? Something simple and quick
would do. The record is "sold out" in my record shop.

Jet Chamber III
(Pete Namlook & Atom Heart)

Three of a perfect pair. Within three days, Atom Heart and P.N. finished
this CD. Mostly recorded live at Pete's Klanglabor, this record is
outstanding with its high "Drums & More" (FAX version of Drums & Bass)
impact. Pete played a lot of live guitar and octave bass while Atom Heart
went crazy with some beats. Funky Synths and jazzy E-Piano completed the
outstanding mixture of styles and sounds on this CD.

As on numerous others works, humour had its place: on the more Ambient
tracks "Ultra Koran" and "Beel", Pete created an artificial Muezzin. Atom
Heart said, "...I see him standing right in front of me..." Sometimes a
good machine enhances creativity and lets you do whatever you have in mind.
Pete is obviously obsessed by his "Nord Lead" Synthesizer. On "Quite My
Chords", it sounds like a jam session of an interactive man-machine drummer
with an "only human sentimental" guitar player. No such interactive
collaboration has been heard so far...

Just listening to "Amp" and wondering:

It's a 'PK' release, so logically, Dandy must be German, no? But, I thought
he was from don't-cry-for-me-Argenteeeeeeeenaaaaaah? What's up with that?
"Chica", indeed!

My quick review? Skitty-skat, bassie-bottomed and beat-a-rific.

He is originally from Santiago, Chile but lives in Germany. Rumor has it
that both Dandy and Atom Heart are moving to Santiago this year. Anyway,
check out his solo album on Rather Interesting called "Dandy Jack and the
Cosmic Trousers." Both Tetsu and I cannot recommend it enough. Actually
he's in NYC right now so I should see if I could grab him for an interview.
Anyway, his new album is also on Rather Interesting and it's called Dandy
Jack And The Plastic Woman. It should be out about now if not very soon.

he's a chilean born friend of atom heart's who moved to frankfurt a few
years ago. he also has a solo album out on rather interesting (_dandy jack
and the cosmic trousers_) and one slated for release in the coming weeks
(_dandy jack and the plastic woman_). a peak at jack-the-pimp-daddy can
also be stolen on datacide's recent _ondas_...check the technique on

He was certainly here a couple of months ago, did a rather good gig of him
vs Uwe Schmidt. If they`re both moving here things are definitely looking
up.

Flextone is the first CD which started with 023. The only other one that
started with this number was Paranoid and that was because it was a special
limited edition that wasn't part of the standard releases. The numbering
scheme has incremented from 023 normally which you can see on the RI
discography on hyperreal:

>- are the last four track titles names really Fle, |, |, and \ ?

good question. I've heard lots of different reasons such as those _are_
the song titles, Uwe couldn't think of anything better, the album wasn't
finished, he forgot to give those tracks real names... most of which I
don't believe. What's ironic is that I think the 12" vinyl version has
names for these. I can check when I get home if you remind me.

Yeah. I didn't even realize that this release was short on song
titles until after one of my friends pointed it out to me... anyway, here's
the complete track listing:

1 ALASKA
2 FLEXTONE B
3 AFTERWARDS, I FELT BETTER
4 RATHER ABSTRACT
5 SOUND
6 INSTANT REPLAY
7 FLEXTONE A
8 LIFESIZE
9 FLEXTONE B
10 FRINGE

Oh, and about that `why do the RI releases start with 023?'
question... I just thought I'd point out that the POD COMMUNICATIONS label
also seems to have done the same thing for both their cd and vinyl
releases.

Speaking of, is POD still in existence?

Hey there,

Over New Years I was in Chicago and finally spotted Autechre's Anti ep at a
store called Rocket 69 and picked up my copy for $11. I believe there are a
few more left up there. The also had some of the rising high (one of which
was an Air release) releases and some other fax material as well.

For anyone looking for VSVN on cd, a shop here in Charleston has one. Just
let me know if someone is interested.

A few others were a Rising High release of Air Liquide's "Nephology" and
some other RI releases.

Anyway, the purpose of this post it to help others find music they have
been looking for, not for a profit.

Well listened to RI2 on headphones today while biding time at the
hospital visting the ill relative in the family...

Here are my thoughts: listed in order that I listened

Datacide: Stereo Kiss
supercool, earthfeel (dubby) music intro up until the trippy spoken
conversation ('specially with the headphones!)...not sure if it meshed
well (both parts good, but one track?)

RI2: Natural Blur
smooth nice drone consistency, scratchiness...really like the 'sounds'
used. Ends too soon!

RI2: Crane Spotting
err...hurt my head...slow/fast at the same time...ungh! (in a cool way.)

RI2: Intel.Inside
gentle 'minimal' lull/sleep inducing...

Dandy Jack: Binal True
Does this involve A. Heart? pretty good. remember liking it on 1st
listen but not much noted.

Machine Paisley: Copacabana Palace
relaxing -- chilled -- redundant

Brown: Male Box
Heard many positive reviews of this project, however this doesn't do all
that much for me...

HAT: Organic Mango
soothing

Mono Trademark: "E" stands for Electro
liken' it more moving Really like this...fun!

+N: Wook Danube
2nd half lived up to the words "Rather Interesting" :)

Well those were my rather spacious notes... ordering RI1 next
month... The guy has too much out to search it all out, might just color
myself content with the RI 1 + 2 releases, but if you have any suggestions
based on this little info, feel free...

Later...

Subject: (mother) Re: (idm) Lassigue Bendthaus plus.....

Uwe Schmidt aka Atom Heart, the man behind Lassigue Bendthaus, has released
a proverbial ton of other material. Unfortunately a lot of it is very hard
to find -- on POD and FAX. _Repetitive Digital Noise_ by "I" is about as
crisp, digital and minimalistic as it comes (on POD, good luck). _Tinned
Music_ by "I" is easier to find, recently (re?-)issued in the UK, but it's
not as good IMO. Several tracks from _Render_ are recast as epic,
multilayered acid mixes on _Render: Audible_, also on Kk. It's a personal
favorite. If you find _VSVN_ just snap it up immediately.

The bulk of his material the last two years has been released on his own
Rather Interesting label (basically part of FAX). There, again, most of
the releases are out of print but some pop up now and again. Rhythms on
releases in the last year or so are mostly fragmented--polymetric,
quantized to 5:4, or 60% swing, etc. I think this works best on _Brown_
(which should still be available) -- think of Alec Empire's _Hypermodern
Jazz 2000.5_ but crisper and bordering on the academic. _Mono Trademark_
works almost as well, ranging from straight 4/4 electro rhythms to slow
percussion without any apparent rhythmic scheme (whether polymeter,
polyrhythm, two-tempo canon or anything else). I could tell you good
things about other releases as well, but they do not resemble what you say
you are trying to find.

You might also look for _Cloned_ by Lassigue Bendthaus, available in the
States from Metropolis. _Cloned_ is less synth-pop than _Render_, more
electro- industrial -- and, as such, probably more in the spirit of Clock
DVA.
