As far as the new album, this is what Uwe told me...
"Music is just happening briefly. Some remixes here and there, some
compilations and bits and pieces. Since my studio is already taken
apart my plan is to start working beginning of April in Santiago
again. On the top of the list is still >pop artificielle< which i
hope to complete pretty fast. let's see."
So from my experiences, if it is completed in May, expect a
September/October release.
Hal.
P.S. Uwe mentioned that he will be playing his last show this year in
Europe on March 14th weekend. Probably in Frankfurt. Anyone in the
area, sounds like a not-to-be-missed performance. Check it out if
you can.

Possibly the synth is the problem. Not even so much that, but this makes
me think of Morton Feldman's _Triadic Memories_ and a little of what he
wrote about it:
"What Western musical forms have become is a paraphrase of memory But
memory could operate otherwise as well. In 'Triadic Memories',
(..), there is a section of different types of chords where each
chord is slowly repeated. One chord might be repeated three times,
another, seven or eight -- depending on how long I felt it should go
on. Quite soon into a new chord I would forget the reiterated chord
before it. (....) This way of working was a conscious attempt at
formalizing a disorientation of memory. (....) In this regularity
there is a suggestion that what we hear is functional and
directional, but we soon realize that this is an illusion; a bit
like waling the streets of Berlin - where all the buildings look
alike, even if they are not."
The main problem for me with _Live at sel i/s/c_ is the tones don't have
the richness of a piano (which is tough-to-impossible anyway). Compare
that to some of Tetsu Inoue's work, or Atom Heart's track on _Deepnet_,
which have -texture-.
Have you heard "Doublevision" by Cabaret Voltaire? The loop doesn't really
change but it has a richness of texture that forces your brain to focus on
different aspects on each repetition.
(This is so imprecise. Language doesn't have the words to properly discuss
extremely minimal music.)

Hey, Atomheads. This review was in Vital Weekly. Eat more cheese.
ATOM HEART/EYEPHONE - MICROPOSSESSED (CD by Container)
The sleeve states "all sounds generated exclusively from acoustic feedback,
assembled and composed digitally" - well, if you say so lads. What we get
is four tracks of varying length and mood, all using the "Micro" prefix,
which is appropriate as this is a pleasingly restrained record. The disc
kicks off with the appropriately named "Microstart". Gently shifting
pulses phase and morph to good effect while subsurface activity is (almost)
apparent. Tape delay feedback appears before a gentle swell of distant
surf noise. At a 30 minutes this track shifts its mood gently enough to
lull the listner into a false sence of security before the second piece,
"Microcore", introduces tweeter-frazzling hi end frequencies over a bed of
bubbling sequenced tones. "Microcracks" picks up the pace a little as a
lo-fi electro/techno rhythm gradually forms. Here serious bass pulses are
accompanied by a whole array of bleeps, squeaks and belches. If I didn't
know better I'd say a budget beat box was being put through its paced, but
we must trust the ever-prolific Uwe and Eyephone to have confined
themselves to feedbacks. The last track ("Microcycled") employs rumbles
and buzzes to invoke submerged threat. A tiny rhythm finally appears, just
in time for the end. Overall, a most pleasing CD - low level stuff that
ranges between extremely quiet and quietly extreme. (RTH)

Hey. here's a review of a CD with an AH track on it. This is taken from
Vital Weekly #70. Some of my favorite artists are on this, also (Bruce
Gilbert, of Wire, Ralf Wehowsky, of P16.D4, John Duncan). Enjoy!
VARIOUS ARTISTS - ANTIPHONY (2CD on Ash International)
A whole bunch of remixes incorporating sounds sucked out of the lowest
reaches of the radio spectrum by Joe Banks, aka Disinformation. Currently
one of my favourite artists on Ash, Joe Banks has now three releases out on
this label, two on vinyl and another as a full-length CD. I am quite
smitten by the latter mostly because my body perceives it as dense
information which, if tuned right, I might be able to decode. Especially
good for those large-pupilled late nights and dream excursions. The
packaging echoes that of the earlier Mesmer and Fault In The Nothing
collections, and duplicates some of the information included with the
original Disinformation releases. Once again, it reads like surrealists on
ketamine.
It seems right from the start that many of the remixers who contributed to
this CD were taken by the weird glock-type melody included as part of the
last track on the R + D CD, which itself was sourced form an unidentified
HF broadcast.
Ralf Wehowsky opens this set with a mostly sedate track which closes with
disturbing banshee screams. Succint Bruce Gilbert contributes two brief
tracks - the first an angry robohornet, trapped and circling in a narrow
space. The second is a more granular excursion. Kapotte Muziek
manipulate existing work(as they always do) in a surprisingly brief track
which leapfrogs about but lurks mostly in the low. Big steel doors
thunder, they don't rattle. People Like Us stagger two sides of the same
thing in a rather pointless track and are followed by Chris & Cosey. Their
contribution, 'Stargate' sounds like slowly unfurling slipstreams of a
long-past event. They wind up then they wind down. Slow and soothing in
the midst of all this. Prolific German Atom Heart is subtle too. John
Duncan is not. And at last, my two favourites on Disc 1: LOSD provide a
track which develops into a long stretched out conversation between two or
three primordial subterraliens, which are often to be found hiding
somewhere in the music these guys produce. Last track on Disc 1 is by Mark
Van Hoen...and it may even be the weirdest of the lot. Strange
juxtapositions in Radio Land. Haunting, demanding, totally... Disc two
kicks off with a decent dark deep drone provided by SETI, gradually being
taken over by a more high end drone and likewise high peeps. Somebody who
wishes to remain anonymous provides us with an apply entitled 'Untitled'
piece in which the Sakahashi piece and truly ambient music beneath. There
is kitschy touch to this, but it stays on the good side. A short spoken
word piece is followed by Mr. Disinformation himself, followed by the
'soundcheck of Disobey performance' (is there an analogue thing to
Merzbow's track on 'A Fault In The Nothing', also recorded at a
soundcheck?). A noisy beast this one, and the question remains: how was
the concert itself? Karkowski and Lyon got their kicks out of sampling
kicks, a nice stereo spectrum opens up, but as more kicks and keyboards
drop in, they are lost in their piece. Far too long this piece. Marc
Behrens is doing his collage thing (whereas he could have been doing his
techno thing too). Slowly building, by carefully placing each new sound on
top of the other. Mark Poysden stretches the Disinformation sounds in his
sampler and the random filter play their piece.
Taking all the good tracks from both CD's would still deliver two CD's of
music, as the weak are in minority on this set. (MP + FdW)

background in techno, house, ambient and serious avant-garde music.
"Eyephone" is known for his releases "Reductive" (Cd album 1995),
"Evergreens" (CD album 1996) and "Greenhouse e.p." (12inch 1996) (all on
Hypnotism) and Atom Heart who released material under many diferent

"Morphogenetic Fields (CD 1994 on Rough Trade) and "Shellglove" (CD 1996
on Recent Programmings). Got together in the summer of 1995 to start
on their collaboration project entitled "micropossessed". The music was
layered in various sessions and completed one year later. In the summer
of 1996, the basic for sound generation consists of audio feedback made
by M. Behrens between 1990 and 1995. This material was then re-sampled
and digitally modified to enhance its specific microrhythmic qualities.
Those highly abstract audio textures were composed to create different
atmospheres ranging from reduced rhythmic ambient via elaborated
funkyness of the percussive "micropossessed" cracks to the cyclic
interferences of "microcycled" which is the coda to the entire
composition. The concept used in the processing of the audio material was
adapted for the manipulation of several video screenshots. Parts of
these low resolution image files were magnified and used as cover artwork
to reveal their microstructures. Both, the music and visuals cohere to
form this conceptual masterpiece."

I'm not overwhelmingly familiar with much of the material, but a good

the only one of this series still in print (careful, there are two
Technopolis series out there. This is the one that compiles Zoth Ommog,
Suck Me Plasma, and NewZone recordings.

I'm giving this the "play twice before listening" treatment.
Total time about an hour.
There's 4 tracks:
1. Microstart
2. Microcore
3. Microcracks
4. Microcycled
It's a little gatefold with plasma-wierdness graphics...
There's no text anywhere on the packaging, with the exception
of 2 stickers which thank 2 people both named Sven and
Staalplaat's address. Also, there's the following:
"All tracks produsced by Atom Heart and Eyephone.
Recorded at Sel i/s/c. All sounds generated
exclusively from acoustic feedbacks, assembled and
composed digitally."
Does anyone have more information about this release, other then
the write-up on Staalplaat's webpage?

Subject: (mother) review - "Shellglove" by ATOM HEART
Yup.
"Shellglove" is absolutely amazing.
The album starts off very harsh, as if Uwe were picking up where he
left off after the POD stuff (ie: "Act" by ATOMU' SHINZO, "Tinned Music" by
i, "Datacide" by DATACIDE, and even the COEUR ATOMIQUE disc on FAX). So,
I'm puffin' along to that thinking to myself, "Great, Uwe's going back to
his crunchy shit!", when the second song rolls right in...
...whoa. Nice, dark, and funky. Strange, but if it didn't say `ATOM
HEART' on this cd I wouldn't have ever known who it was. Or maybe
someone's lowrider' parked in my driveway... nope, no one there. Then it
starts getting quiet and click-y... and then back into another thudthud
grove with some underlayed Uwe-noodling. Then I realize that after
fourteen minutes of bobbing my head that I haven't heard any breaks between
the three tracks. Geez, this cd's been continuously mixed! Cooool. ;}
By this time, we've gotta pack some socks underneath the hallway doors
so they don't rattle so much (we don't wanna wake up Ilizibith, y'know...).
It's a good thing too, because right then the music gets real quiet. All I
hear is this shallow heartbeat with a bunch of science fiction ambience
floating around the living room... which of course gradually amplifies into
this SUBSUBbass outtake from BASS itself. There's no saving the doors now.
Or the windows. Or the air conditioner vents. Or the stove door. Or the
Star Wars figures that just vibrated themselves off of the table. I could
turn it down I suppose...
...but I'm falling asleeeeeepppp. Huh? Shit, the sonic thumps start
doubling up on themselves into this steadily increasing succession until
they eventually reach this near-"Ain't It Funky" tempo (weird background
out-of-sync subbeat/rhythm and everything). This eventually quiets down
into its basic layerings, and then speeds back up again into a succession
of rather repetitive trance-inducing songs. Not boring mind you, and most
definitely not in 4/4. Not stand-out pieces either, but nice all-the-same
(considering I haven't heard anything like his from Uwe since... oh, I'd
have to say the past 20 albums or so). ;}
^^
Anyway, they eventually fade out and are just as quickly mixed back
into a more recent RI-type sounding song (the familiarity in style is
relaxing and helps bring the whole album together). This slowly filters
down into a very nice MOPA-type outro... AND THEN back into yet another
harsh POD induced excursion. This one sounds like some industrial turbine
grinding away, on and on and on until finally it whiiiirs and cliiiicks
itself down into a very nice spacey lull. A great machine shutting off.
A nice ending to a wonderful album.
Here's the tracklisting, etc:
SHELLGLOVE : ATOM HEART (1996)
1 SHELL 6.53
2 CABASA LOUNGE 6.23
3 SAND 6.28
4 HELICON VALLEY 11.51

8 MARIMBA SUAVE 8.16
9 SPLENDOUR TRASH 11.50
GER (CD. RP 1814 / 35137-422) RECENT PROGRAMMINGS/SEMAPHORE
note: The GERMAN cd for "Shellglove" comes with no back picture sleeve, and
comes in a clear plastic disc holder (instead of the standard black
kind). A rectangular white [print] on red sleeve sticker is affixed,
which wraps around the back and top-front of the jewel case itself
(the track listing, and its production and layout information are
featured on this sleeve sticker).
What's with that call-number anyway? `RP 1814'? Being that this is
RECENT PROGRAMMINGS' first release (noted as a division of SEMAPHORE), I'd
have to say that it's gotta be a theme of some sort... kind of like
starting off with `RI 023' or `POD 023'. Possible numerology riddle here -
what's the reference to `1814'?
Oh, and the picture sleeve was layed out by none other than LINGER
DECOREE (Uwe's graphic design venture), with the main photo being credited
to good 'ol Arielle. A red rubber glove crumpled amidst a montage of
broken seashells - washed up on Playa Montezuma in Costa Rica no less. And
if you turn the jewel case at an angle (it's barely visible), you'll also
notice a small AH-logo surrounded by a series of eminating rings. Slick.
- - -
Hey, so I've actually had "Shellglove" since mid-February, but wasn't
in the mood to finally listen to it until Saturday night (ok, give me a
break - I'm weird that way). This album really impressed me in that it was
done as a continual mix with absolutely no breaks - something Uwe has only
previously done to his more ambient-oriented releases. Plus, the obvious
duality of each programed track makes it feel like there are actually twice
as many songs on this album than have been accounted for.
Also, for some strange reason all the music has been recorded/mastered
at a very low level. I had to turn it up to `11' to really get the full
feel of the subbass. This turned out to cause some very pleasant effects
however in that the bass flowed out real warm and rich, while the music
itself (which it seemed was recorded at an even higher level) stood out and
was very sharp sounding... almost tinny at times even. Very nice.
And, before anyone asks... the place/person I ended up getting this cd
from supposedly can't get anymore [he says]. I originally happened upon
acquiring it through pure chance - a guy contacted me after a post I made
on IDM about two months ago asking where I could get myself a copy. He
said he works for a distributor, so I think maybe it was a promo sent to
them or something. Anyway, that avenue's all dried up. :(
Believe me though when I say that I'll be sure to post any leads to
the mother-list when I come across them. Here's some label information
which is taken directly from the sleeve sticker:
RECENT PROGRAMMINGS
ANDERNACHER STRASSE 18
90411 NURNBERG
tel: 0911-952770
fax: 0911-9527750
In the meantime, anyone else have any ideas? Believe, me... you're
really missing out until you get it for yourself.

Recently got 'Built' due to accidental circumstances, but seeing as life is
short decided to keep and listen to it. Wow. Like it much better than any
other AHeart material I've previously heard. Like the experimental nature
with a beat. Was wondering two things:
A) is +n 'Plane' this good? (getting 'ex.s' in a day or two, since that is
what the store was originally supposed to send me, and is now sending).
Wondered if it'd be worthwhile to get the complete the series then.
B) Anyone follow the advice inside and buy Chris Watson's cd on Touch. Is
it equally good? I like the two tracks titled "Watson" that he worked
on so....(?)
thanks for any advice.

both _plane_ and _ex.s_ are very different from _built_. the closest things
to _built_ i've heard are probably _second nature_ on fax, and datacide's
_ondas_ and (unfortunately) _masters of psychedelic ambience_ on rather
interesting. the common link here is tetsu inoue, who brings a more
atmospheric, experimental element to his collaborations with ah, similar to
what i suspect victor sol's role ended up being on _built_. (note: _second
nature_ is the list schizo of these, so if that is a criterion you might
steer clear...).

beatless environmental ambient composed solely of (quite often treated)
field recordings from different parts of the world. nothing like atom heart

No. "Plane" is terrible, actually. It's problem is the that it falls into
that trap that plagues the worst AH albums, which is that he gets a loop
going, then noodles around the unchanging loop for 7 or 8 minutes, and
repeats that formula nine times and presses a CD of it. Pretty boring. You
should be much happier with "ex.s", which is incredibly varied and complex,
like "Built". By the way, I agree with you that "Built" is one of AH's best
releases. If you haven't heard Silver Sound "60" yet, it is also just as
good.

I think +N is quite good. I haven't really ever heard any *bad* AH although
I can't stomach the really hard stuff too well... it's way to irritating..
and not in a good way :) All of his "noodling" and ambient stuff is pretty
much all good. +N proves that an unchanging loop is sometimes a good
thing....
Some people also think Eno's ambient albums are boring <grin>

i never really thought of it that way, but listening to VSVN #1
shows how your description is sometimes, but not always (Jet
Chamber II, track 3) correct.
> +N proves that an unchanging loop is sometimes a good thing....
Ahh...i should hunt down ex.s
i think it's time. As far as looping being good things, one might
view something like AH's "live @ sel i/s/c" as a loop, but it
continues to change... in sound, in how much energy it conveys,
in it's own overall progression.

Yeah... coincidentally (pathetically?) enough I was thinking along
the same lines. I even posted something to the Ambient list about `the
significance of 1814', and did in fact get a few responses.
Both Hess Hodge <hess.hodge@Colorado.edu> and Matt Jarsky
<jarsky@cibcdc.com> replied to me directly saying that the letter `R' (as
in `Rhythm') is the eighteenth letter in the English alphabet, and `N' (as
in `Nation') is the fourteenth. This doesn't hold up when it comes to the
call-number in question though [RP 1814], because then it would have to be
1816 instead. Ugh.
^^
Anyway, I'd still like to know what it's significance is. Maybe I'll
