4 tracks, 61:02
1. Microstart 30:05
2. Microcore 9:09
3. Microcracks 14:08
4. Microcycled 7:36
This is an excellent ambient disc, quiet in most places but with a bunch
of interesting things happening as well, making it very worthwhile. It's
all one track when you listen to it; the segues are seamless. While I
enjoy quiet washes and soothing tones, the ambient recordings I like most
are the ones that take chances and mix things up a little and dare to throw
you off guard sometimes, and this is one of those recordings.
"Microstart," the longest of the set, is mostly undulating machine whooshes
and hums, onto which is etched an abstract set of unusual tones.
"Microcore" adds some electronic "chirping" (it really reminds me of
crickets) and feels slightly more urgent, building into "Microcracks,"
where the previously sparse percussion sounds become rather more prominent
and take over for a while. This track is very rhythmically busy, but
completely ambient at the same time; it's really amazing and I'm not
describing it very well, but it's a very, um, "invigorating" ambient track
at a subconscious level, if that makes any sense. Finally, it slows back
down and takes us to "Microcycled," the ominous quiet ending,
electronically evoking a big clock slowly, eternally, chiming its last
hour... wow.
Eight and a half out of ten.
This disc is available in many places. I got mine from David Hodgson at
Playing By Ear. (I think his address is "pbe@rt66.com".) It's available
in the US at domestic prices, being distributed by Soleilmoon (it's in
their catalog, too).

Recent Programmings/Semaphore 1814 (Germany)
9 tracks, 67:46
1. Shell 6:53
2. Cabasa Lounge 6:23
3. Sand 6:28
4. Helicon Valley 11:41
5. Mellow Sequence 6:37
6. Plastique 4:11
7. Nature Bypass Biology 5:10
8. Marimba Suave 8:16
9. Splendour Trash 11:51
This is a determined Atom Heart release. Much of it wouldn't sound out of
place on a Black Dog record. Cacophonous rhythms, melodious interludes,
off-kilter noises, occasional ambience, this is a very purposeful disc.
While the experimentation level here is not particularly high and the
"tools" are familiar, the result is rather admirable and likable anyways.
It's a nice change of pace from the "noodling" we've become accustomed to
in some of the recent RI releases, very precise and complex.
"Shell" is truly a kick-ass rhythm track. "Helicon Valley" is a well-
placed ambient space, very pretty. The shuffling "Mellow Sequence" is my
favorite, and it also happens to be the most RI-ish of the bunch (along
with "Marimba Suave"), mis-steppin' blippiness (plus a surprise
"traditional" instrument!). "Nautre Bypass Biology" is a droney workout,
hypnotic and sublime.
Definitely a solid entry in the AH library. Not spectacluar, but
deliberately engaging and complete.
Seven out of ten.
It appears to be difficult to acquire this CD. I got mine from CD Europe
(http://www.cdeurope.com). They're slow (it took a month for mine to get
here), expensive ($20.95 plus shipping for this baby), their catalog is a
bit of a mess (they often list the same disc for multiple prices) and they
often list things that are out of print and that they can't actually get.
On the other hand, you can do secure online ordering with a credit card,
you can keep track of your orders on the web, and they've never done badly
by me (I've ordered from them four or five times). Also, a lot of the
things that you think are out of print, sometimes they surprise you and
come up with one. They have a couple of old Atom Heart 12"s listed
("Milagro," "Whitehouse," "Cluster Edit" and "Live at the Casino Montre")
and the "Milagro" CD-single; it couldn't hurt to try 'em. (A tip: make
separate orders for easy-to-find stuff and hard-to-find stuff, so that they
don't hold up shipping you a bunch of easy-to-find items while they're
looking for a hard-to-find one.)

eyephone is m. behrens. ah teamed up with eyephone for the container music

has a release on bernhard gunter's trente oiseaux label.

innovative way.floating mambo rhythms morph into funk grooves and end up in
hyper active drum+bass quotations without getting lost in the programming.
not always serious, this album is a giant audio culture sample of the latin
american consciousness, which starts as a traditional composition ,getting
twisted around and deconstructed by the mind of 'senor coconut', passing
through every style possible. Titles such as >el coco baile< or

western counterparts, music is given a new perspective...
a possible trigger for the development of electronic music.

I was a bit disappointed with it to be honest. The first few times I
listened to it I thought it was great, but the more I listen, the less I
like. It has a free jazz feel to it, but it doesn't seem like the type of
free jazz that incorporates exploration - more like noodling.
Unfortunately, it doesn't have that much of a Brazilian sound other than a
few tunes with bossa beats. There are a couple of outstanding tracks, but
overall I think it falls short of what I've come to expect from AH. The
tune recorded live at the Blue Note in San Paulo is great though...
Hopefully others will like it more than I.

Well, the obvious question is: do you have "Render Audible: US
Remixes"? Besides that though, there's really no other AH album that is
quite like "Render". There have been only a scant number of tracks (on all
of the AH/related releases) which have any sort of lyrics at all - I'm not
sure if that's what you're interested in particularly.
As far as where to start, check out either of the "Real Intelligence"
compilations simply because they are samplers of all of Uwe's more recent
releases on his own Rather Interesting label. Otherwise, if you're looking
for a harsher sound (nearer to LB) you might want to search for any of the
AH/related releases on POD Communications. Those are really hard to come
by though.
If you need a source of where to get any of this stuff, anyone on this

I didn't get to listen to it myself, but there's a copy of this
stuffed into the `techno' section at Wax 'n' Facts in Atlanta (for anyone
who's interested in checking it out for themselves). It scared the shit
out of me too... `ATOM HEART' in big giant print on a pink vinyl record.

Hey.
I got the most recent Isolation Tank [mailorder] catalogue in the mail
this past week, and in it was a listing for the Hypnotism compilation/
sampler called "Eightracksaid":
> EIGHTRACKSAID [CD] 20.99

I'm assuming that they meant `Almost Digital'... regardless, this
sounds like a pretty hip compilation. I would think that the tracks
included are ones from the label's previous releases??
Anyway, besides the above IsoTank also lists in stock the LAGOWSKI and
both of the EYEPHONE albums on Hypnotism (all at $20.99 apiece). Here's
their web page and e-mail address if you want to check this out for
yourself:

To look at Uwe's recent history (the direction his sound has taken) it
would be logical to assume that some House Music retard umknowingly assumed
the name. Still it leaves one wondering..

You know... I wish Uwe hadn't picked this track to be on the RI2
compilation. It's not representative of DATACIDE really (more like a sore
thumb), and tends to throw off the mood of the disc entirely.
Don't get me wrong though... I think it's funny as shit, and it does
fit into the scheme of "Ondas" as an album. But maybe (specifically) for
the sampler it should have been edited or something - right at the 5:05
mark when the orgasmizing chick cuts out would have been perfect.
I've played "Stereo Kiss" for every one of my friends because I
thought it was classic... but they only `get the joke' because they know
who Dandy Jack is. It's an AH-fan's very own `in-joke'. Any of us on this
list can close our eyes and pretend we're at the bar chumming it up with
Martin and Uwe, sipping hard liquor, and drunkenly laughing at his little
story. I've even gone as far as playing it while I was drunk/stoned just
to get the near-full effect. :)
BUT... but I can see why people just getting into AH (through this
very sampler, no less) can be a little perturbed with the second half of
this track. By being on RI2, it's just not funny. And, I would have to
say that just because of the dialogue having been included I tend not to
like RI2 nearly as much as I like RI1.

Datacide is Headphone music if nothing else. Listen to Flowerhead without
Headphones and then again with...The album becomes something quite amazing
through the use of Headphones. New sounds come from nowhere. Sounds
actually become alive dense and layerd.
Ondas may say "headphone use not recommended" but this is ajoke. Just look
at the inside of the booklet!! What's she wearin on her pretty little head?
Get the joke now? If it says Datacide..pull out them headphones or you'll

Soleilmoon has this in their catalog for $14.99. Look in the Staalplaat
section of the catalog on their website, http://www.soleilmoon.com, under
the "Staalplaat/Container" heading (you have to scroll down a little).
Also, Playing By Ear have it, but I forget what its price was, I think $15.
Mail pbe@rt66.com for prices from him; that's where I got my copy.
I have ordered from all of these places (including Synaptic) in the past
with excellent results.
In any case, get this CD. It's exceptional.

recent toop-compiled 2cd set on virgin entitled _booming on pluto: electro

series, meant to accompany his book of the same name (highly recommended,
btw). for those that don't know, toop is one of the few consistently
publishing scholars of 20th century western dance music's complex
historiography, and one of the few music journalists who seems to
understand the relationship between a music's tradition and its
contemporary vanguard. his first book on the subject, _rap attack_,
featured a large and detailed discussion of electro (he also assembled an
"electro a-z" article for the wire magazine last year), and i for one am
glad to see uwe et al propped by a man of toop's rep (and next to such
names as soul sonic force, juan atkins, fsol, jonzun crew, hashim,

Yes, this is more my speed -- compared to some of the recent discs,
sections of which come off as mere novelty. I got stuck on this one and
haven't yet listened to the release on Side Effects, which I received the
same day. I first listened to it during, er, "re-entry" shall we say.
Had one of those John Cage/Olivier Messiaen moments where early-morning
birdsong added a strangely-appropriate, organic twist to this abstract
recording.

Wow, I didn't know that about POD. This makes sense though when I
think about how his very first FAX full-lengths sound a lot like the POD
releases (ex: COEUR ATOMIQUE). So for Uwe it was N.HG.MEDIEN first, then
NEW ZONE, Kk, POD, various smaller labels (like DELIRIUM/AFTER 6AM, SS, JJ,
RISING HIGH, etc), FAX, ROUGH TRADE, and then RI... in that order of
succession?

SUPERFICIAL DEPTH - DIGITAL SUPERIMPOSING (CD by Side Effects)
Superficial Depth is a new name chosen by Uwe Schmidt, who we of course
know as the busyst bee buzzing around with Lassigue Benthaus, Atom Heart,
Lisa Carbon Trio and many more. His discography grew skyhigh in only a few
years. Recentely he moved to Chile, but I doubt that he is cut off from
doing exciting music. In a way this new side project is just too perfect:
the music, one long track of just under 70 minutes, seems like suited very
well for a release on a label such as Side Effects. If ever Side Effects
needed a perfect example of what the label stands for, Superficial Depth
is it. Waving tones of synths and samples (no melody heard however) of
superb dark ambience, rumbling of percussive sounds in the background,
anything that is not static but constantely shifting in tone and colour
makes this a perfect listening when you turn of all your lights at night.
Dark ambient indeed.
