Just wanted to let everyone know that the mother mailing list archives have
been updated. You can find them at
http://www.reporter.org/~wally/mother
Currently, archives dating back to before the list was automated are still
not available, but will be sometime soon.
Also, the March 1997 archives are dirtied with posts from the mail loop
problem we experienced around then. Eventually I'll clean up that archive.
Search capabilities are not available yet.
All the posts since March 1996 are there though, and the list is now being
archived on the fly. I appreciate your patience with this ongoing project.
Feedback is welcome.
cheers

Does anyone out there have any idea when "Pop Artificialle" is supposed to
come out? I've been waiting patiently for ooohhhh just under three years
now. Let's just say I'm beggining to get a little worried.
By the way, I might be wrong about what the album is supposed to be called.
That's just the last name I heard being throw around.

ATOM HEART
To want to report on "Atom Heart" is a major undertaking. Few German
producers have produced such a noteworthy and breathtaking discography.
Atom Heart masters many styles, marches wholeheartedly through ambient
soundscapes, techno, acid, industrial, jazz, experimental jungle etc. and
always returns home, without passing through a gloomy forest or falling
prey to angry <crispy> witches. He is disarmingly quiet, never stands out,
never dances in discotheques, and never lands in a gutter or on the lap of
a barmaid. Dr. Walker spoke with Atom Heart on the day before his
departure for his Australian tour.
W: The tape's running...
AH: Good.
W: Yes.
AH: Yes.
W: It's noteworthy, that you don't fit the techno star cliche very well.
One doesn't see you at parties, and after your gigs you take off
immediately. Banana juice instead of vodka.
AH: Parties aren't really my thing. I simply don't need that - just once a
month is enough. Parties are good for inspiration, but I don't need
them. I'd rather save up my energy.
W: When did you begin making music?
AH: I actually started with drums, around 1981-82. I had to sell the drums
because of my neighbours and used the money to buy a drum machine. It
was an accidental contact with electronics, although I had also heard
some electronic music by then. I borrowed a synthesizer and a 4-track
recorder. That was all not very worthwhile, it was pretty outdated.
From the first cassette productions to the first records - that was
truly by accident. There isn't really anything that I have planned in
advance more than a year and a half out.
W: You started out making Industrial music.
AH: Yeah, that wasn't really anything else then.
W: Your path has gone from Industrial to Techno and then from there on to
more experimental things.
AH: Yeah, more or less.
W: You have moved around between so many styles in the meantime. How do
you think things will develop in the future?
AH: In general we find ourselves in a time when styles are beginning to
loosen up. Everything is becoming fused more and more. From Hip-Hop
and Triphop to Ambient and Jungle etc. There are fewer new movements.
That's no different then with myself. I discovered this tendency
myself two years ago. The mainstream Techno is missing the vision that
will allow it to move forward. It will be a while, until a new style
has come to fruition.
W: You will be returning to Chile shortly. Does this [association] have
anything to do with your search for new styles?
AH: Yeah, it has something to do with inspiration. It is in part a very
private discovery, and also of one which is associated with music. I
wanted to [dedicate] myself to the scene in which I find myself
presently. When I take things into perspective, I realize that [this
scene] revolves around a few hundred, maybe thousand, people.
Everything is unbelievably serious and ponderous. For me it all has a
bit less meaning. I don't want to [ascribe or suggest] any kind of
meaning to my music which it doesn't have. I would like to head for
newer, uncharted musical territories.
W: Why Chile and not South Africa?
AH: Latin America is a region that for quite some time has had a presence
in my life. About seven years ago I became interested in Latin
American music, which I had previously no interest in. I travelled to
Costa Rica and Chile a couple of times, that was very inspirational.
There are other movements there which dominate, which are quite
different from those we are familiar with. Besides a friend of mine is
from Chile. Through him I traveled there twice and so was able to meet
many musicians. On my last trip it became clear that I should relocate
to there.
W: I there a scene there for you, can you earn your daily bread?
AH: There aren't really many live gigs. The scene is very, very small.
There are no labels, only major operations. There is no indie scene.
Europe will remain for me the primary way for publishing my output. A
friend here in Frankfurt will direct my label. I believe that it will
work out well.
W: You must certainly encounter a variety of strange problems: power
outages, food shortages, bugs.
AH: Chile sounds like it could be quite uncivilized, quite funky. But it's
really not like that. Chile is one of the civilized countries of Latin
America. I haven't really had any kind of problems there. In Costa
Rica, for example, ants are to be found in every single opening that
permits them, but Chile doesn't have the same problem. As for staying
in contact with Europe, I'll have to decide what to monitor, what to
interpret. I can always return [to Europe].
W: What is a personal challenge for you?
AH: Yeah, I had this vision of how things would be in five years: my 500.
Atom Heart. This proposal I didn't find to be tremendously
stimulating. I don't want to go on doing the same thing. I mean,
things don't stay the same, one develops oneself, but the setup never
changes. That is anyhow not very exciting. I would like to work with
other musicians in Latin America. I would like to work with the
existing Chilean aesthetics. I'd like to let the people who make
rather inferior portraits in front of the churches design my album
covers. I would like to operate with such an aesthetic.
W: That sounds good.
AH: Yeah, although it's definitely not that easy, to pull away, but I'm
lucky in that I have very flexible structures. I'll have to see how I
can bring things together again, how I handle the situation with the
label and my business.
W: The Internet?
AH: Yes, the Internet will perhaps be part of it. Everyone says that world
is being brought more closely together - that's what I'd like to try
out.
W: Let's talk briefly about your gear.
AH: My setup is very, very minimal. Almost everything is Akai, although
they seem to have a bad name. I use an S3200 as my primary piece and
an MPC3000. I use a DR8 for a hard disk recorder. After Chile I might
just take only the MPC along. I also have a Nord Lead...
W: Keyboard version?
AH: No, the rack version. I just have a rack module. I play everything on
the MPC pads or on another controller to sequence. My setup is
actually focused on the sampler. I have a lot of peripherals,
compressors, multieffect processors, etc.
W: Where do you find your sounds from then?
AH: Sometimes I just sample the Nord Lead or some type of module or the
radio. I no longer have any analog instruments. In the end no one can
really say where the sound came from. It's getting to the point that
whomever is making music can come up with the result they want.
W: Do you have any kind of message?
AH: No.
W: A political commentary?
AH: No.
W: Dog breeding is cool?
AH: No, no. I don't have anything further to expand upon.
W: No message?
AH: No, I really don't like to explain things further...
W: Well then cheers I hope to soon receive an invitation to visit sunny
Chile and wish you well there.

FONOSANDWICH is the title of rather interestings release #045. As proven on
the prior >senor coconut< album released last month, >r.i.< continues its
journey into latinamerican music areas, this time guided by a love of South
American cuisine.
Atom Heart surprises with 11 delicious meals, ranging from jazzy recipes
like the marvelous >rider sweet< to the funky opener >the real colour of
vitamin C<.
Besides the unique programming, this time Senor Heart himself is on the
mike, using catchy vocals as the ultimate spice in his kitchen. The strange
and intruiging use of vocals clearly separates this album from the previous
ones, entering a different sectro of music that could be best described as
a derivative of futuristic pop ...

Just like to point out that Fonosandwich is a Chilean sandwich delivery
service (in case it wasn't obvious from the name) and they do a very nice

Oh, I wouldn't get worried. Not at all. Now, if Uwe was any other

Subject: (mother) RI grovels
So here's my sob story:
I'm sitting at work about two months ago, listening to Flowerhead and going
about my business when a professor walks in (I work at a university) and
inquires as to what I'm listening to. Of course, I rant and rave about
Flowerhead and the producers behind it and after enduring my zeal for about
5 minutes, the professor inquires if he can listen to it 'for a few weeks'
and then return it.
Now normally I don't loan my CDs out, but I'm thinking 'Hey, it's a
professor, he'll be responsible.'
At any rate, he returns the CD last week and it's cool except that he's
replaced the back cover and *the insert isn't inside it*. And yes, he threw
the old back cover with the insert away and he doesn't have it.
So I'm asking: could some kind-hearted member of this list make a color
copy of the back cover, complete with the spine fold-up sections? I'd be
glad to pay for the cost of the copy and shipping. Email me privately if
you can help me out. BTW, I'm looking for a copy of the RI release, not the
Asphodel re-issue.
My other grovels are (in various degress of 'long shot'-ness):
Flextone CD
VSVN CD
Lisa Carbon Trio - Polyester CD
Lisa Carbon Trio/Atom Heart - Opto Freestyle Swing 12" (POD)
Lisa Carbon & Friends - Stereococktail 12" (Instinct)
Datacide - Datacide CD (POD)
Datacide - Ecstasy of Communication 12" (POD)
Datacide - Head Dance 12" (FAX PS08/32)

I called them up and spoke to them and they told me 'they'd never even
heard of Atom Heart who is he and what are you talking about', so I went
back to my informer dude and said 'hey whats up, they dont know what i'm
talking about and I believe them', and he showed me the 'evidence' which
was some old piece of crappy inconsequential e-mail from someone saying
'these guys in NY have a good selection of cds from ......AH'
is this getting confusing? because I was certainly confused at this point,
and I decided that the whole bootlegging thing was a bunch of ka ka and
these guys hadn't done anything of the sort. (I could tell by their
reaction to the claims)
My one conclusion was that the guy who gave me the info was (PARANOID?)
totally wrong about it and I would never let him take my grandmother on
holiday because he would probably think people were trying to kidnap her or
something...

Atom Heart "Orange" PS08/36
The description states "monochrome" and although there are some
monochrome moments, Orange is much, much more than just another
ambient full-length by Atom Heart. It has become one of my
favorite Atom Heart solo albums (i'd place it above VSVN,
Softcore, and possibly Shellglove in quality). The album has five
tracks, ranging from the brief 6-minute and extraordinarily tasty
beatfull track Rainecho to the longer 20+minute Cobol <2>.
I would consider much of this album Atom Heart Darkambient, and
there isn't a whole lot AH doing this style, either. The album
as a whole is definitely varied and interesting. The five tracks
are all pretty different from one another, making it a pleasant
straight-through listen. I 'spose i could just post a review with
a tracklisting and everything when i get home (i can't remember
all song names right now), if need be...
My roomie just found a sealed copy of this in a record store
several weeks ago, so you could still prolly find others around
somewhere...

Speaking of Atom Heart favorites I picked up an excellent AH on Rather
Intersting the other day called "Dots". I am totally loving this disk!!!
There's no date on it so I don't know whether or not it's new. It is kinda
along the same line as Orange but much more saturated with really fuzzy
subdued bass within really quiet spaces ala Tetsu Inuoe. You can just drift
and drift and drift.... In fact, with regard to the low frequencies, it
requests that you play at low volumes the same as Orange. Does anyone else
have this? Whaddya think? I wasn't crazy about VSVN. I've yet to hear
Softcore or Shellglove.

Well lessee now, Flextone was the first CD to come out on Rather
Interesting, released in September '94, so Dots must have come out
in October, as RI releases are once a month.

I was thinkin' the same thing! Especially track 4, Spinout
Segment, that one *really* reminds me of Tetsu... even the thumpy
sounds in it sound similar to Chill In Chill Out on Organic Cloud.
Damn fine cloudy ambient moozak....

1) One Atomsecond 8.00
2) Ode to BG 13.20
3) Cobal <1> 7.14
4) Rainecho 6.44
5) Cobal <2> 21.25
A man's voice announces "One Atomsecond" and a foreboding yet exquisite
darkambient loop session follows. Having been exposed to several Atom
Heart solo albums in the past (VSVN, Softcore, Shellglove, live at sel
i/s/c), I had anticipated another collection of quirky, hypersequenced, and
electroblipafied songs that would contain the occasional appealing weaving
melodies. To Orange, this description does not apply. Track 1 seems like
it would fit right in with some of the softly grinding beatless essays
presented on the 2CD Isolationism. During the course of the track, a
rhythm makes an slight appearance, but keeps its distance, much in the same
vein as some of Polar Sequences. Track 2, "Ode to BG," starts out with a
brash horn sound that reminds me of someone being clobbered on an old
episode of Batman & Robin... but in slow motion. This continues for a
minute or two, and threatens to be oppressively simple, but before long
other more intriguing sounds fade in. Some notes echo a fragmented yet
suspenseful melody which continues to evolve in its own subtle way and
blink to the left and right. Darkly diabolical and profoundly hypnotic in
headphones. Track 3, "Cobal <1>," dives into a slightly more layered
territory consisting of a low synth hum which serves as a background for a
strange bleepy sound which conjures images of slowly bubbling water and
feathery artificial wildlife trying desperately to communicate with you.
Almost Coilish in nature. Track 4, "Rainecho," starts with an intro
containing segments of violin concertos. The intro gives way to a organic
hollow pipe riff that rapidly blinks on and off in almost unpredictable
ways. A solid pseudo-4-on-da-floor rhythm fades to the fore. Aerobic drum
machine toms betray the advice on the inside of the CD cover: "Listen in
low volume." Hell, at high dB levels this track has the neighbors gettin'
down. "Cobal <2>," the final track, initially bears little resemblance to
its predecessor. It starts with some abstract synth waves blending
chaotically and some hi-hats fade in. Wiggly pitch shifted notes slide
left and right. It sounds like it could develop into another good 4-on-
the-floor, but instead this trails off and another slower rhythm fades in,
layered with some choir-like samples triggered in the same manner as some
old school Severed Heads. You know, the lo-fi kind that drives off all but
the intensively curious (like The Bladders of One Thousand Bedouin). This
too disappears and more loops fill their places, slower and slower. After
this 3rd section it sounds like the track might end. Instead we return to
the darkambient cave from which we initially emerged. A drone howls like a
ghost ship horn and the artificial birdcalls fade in again (hence Cobal
<2>). This track actually sounds like 3 or 4 tracks mixed in, one at a
time. Overall, a pleasantly pensive listen. This type of album blends
sounds from the past without sounding at all "dated." Though it was
released in early '94, it will certainly sound fresh for years to come.

indeed it is the two of them live. It was first released on Ongaku (#3)
and then reissued on Rising High. The first pressings I think were
transparent gold and then plain black vinyl which sounded better. The
label has a black diagram and no information so it's hard to know what you
have. The music is quite good tranced out dance music that keeps evolving
and changing. I believe one side is called Electronique and the other side
Electronikka. Each side has almost 30 minutes of music so it could easily
make a nice almost 60 minute CD single or tape (if you really hassle me for
a copy). There used to be a lot of copies floating around England on both
labels. I purchased mine at Fat Cat in London when I used to live there.
Try them or Sister Ray's and see if they still have any.
Speaking of golden oldies, am I also the only person who has most of the
12" singles Atom Heart did on the 'after 6am' label? Some beautiful music
on those and I wonder if I have them all. There was also a compilation for
this label on CD which I stupidly never picked up. I think most people
have heard the Mihon tracks which have appeared on various Rising High
compilations but the Bi-Face tracks are quite good too.
and yes, yes I know my Atom Heart web page is out of date. My class
finishes in a few weeks so I'll have more time to work on it in later
August hopefully. Has anyone been keeping track that can help me polish it
up sometime soon? Uwe hasn't been keeping in touch but he is getting his
own Internet account soon so hopefully he'll be on mother soon!
thanks

yes! my roomie found this along with "Orange" just a coupla weeks
ago. It's on the Delerium label. There's the "after 6am" comp
and another "the world is Delerium" comp. There's a few of the
same tracks on both (Atom Heart's Pure Function, for instance) but
they each have a few songs definitely worth having on CD. Many
Redeye tracks and a few Total Eclipse as well...
The artwork for the "after 6am" comp is credited to Pink Elln...

Hi everyone....Optic Kiss here...aka j.wise aka Agro aka m.t.head
aka......Phoenix BazootyHead Family...aka...
As there is some dialogue concerning the After 6am stuff, I thought I'd add
my two-cents...Yes the comp is great..but not just because of AH stuff,
which there are three tracks of AH's work...the Redeye tracks are also
GREAT! Redeye is Tobias Belderman, a friend of Uwe's and myself....Toby
(tobias) has also released a CD titled Arizona Tracks which is a must
have....you can reach Toby at tobybel@hrz1.hrz.th-darmstadt.de which could
also put you in touch with Boris of Pyromania who did a fantastic
psychedelic CD...ask Toby. The after 6am CD was released on Delirium
(tel: 011-49-69-131-0168), distributed by Neuton (fax: 011-49-69-811792)
and published by Freibank (the guy from Einsturzende Neubauten). The cover
art for a6am did not feature bumble bee's, we never really thought about
what the heck they were...but on the right side of the cover in the
background, one of the bugs has a pig head, which is featured prominantely
on the inside of the booklet...the head itself was a t-shirt released by
Delirium. the catalogue # is Del A CD 02
About the World is Delirium....this is a release from ZYX records featuring
AH, Redeye, Solar Eclipse, mso vs feos, genetic waste (aka Detune), etc...
The above record is a play on The World of Delirium Vol 1, a gatefold vinyl
release featuring a very large Delirium logo in the gatefold featuring
pictures of Uwe, Olaf (pod), Oliver Lieb, Jorg (delirium) Pascal (feos),
Daniel (detune), Heiko (mso/ongoku), Chrisitian (solar eclipse) and myself
and my wife Caroline. The album features tracks from AH incl. the After 6am
release 001, 002 and Delirium single 005, some of the other tracks are from
Jorg and Oliver Lieb from very rare stuff (delirium 001, 002, 003) and
Special Agent Fuse (delirium 005) this guy has gone on to do some quite
famous stuff...trivia of the day...who is special agent fuse...?.....the
album is a bit hardcore....this was also released on CD....
From the World of Delirium came a very rare recording titled The World of
Delirium Part 1 which was a CD comp of 1000 copies that was handed out at a
live show at Konigsburg Krefeld....the show featured Atom Heart & Pink
Elln, Atomu Shinzo, Redeye & Solar Eclipse, Genetic Waste, Acid Jesus,
Burger Industries, Dandy Jack, and DJ's: Jorg, mso, ata, joe, kid paul, pcp
dj squad, marco zaffarano, and others.....the CD features: Redeye, Atom
Heart, Velocity, Rebel Youth, Pink Elln and others.....the CD was not for
sale!
A release I've not read much about is from pod (olaf) and Prinz magazine...
a double CD featuring Acidisn (tobias/redeye), +N, Atomu Shinzo, i, lsg,
air (fax), and others.....one CD is hardcore, the other ambient....
Another comp with AH which is great is Delirium 301 released by Time Tunnel
(catalogue # CD 006, the guy behind Air Liquide), features Atomu Shinzo,
Datacide, Atom Heart and others.....there's a rare pre copy version
featuring a different lineup that was only of limited production....
One more thing about the After 6am release...the comp was also released by
Plastic Head in the U.K. tel: 0491-825-029 catalogue # a6a uk 1....this
release feature different cover art from us...plastic head lightbulbs
modified with the after 6am logo and a flying pig head bug and lots of
goofy messages......in the sleave the release is on two pieces of vinyl.
Is anyone out there familiar with the Coeur Atomique release on FAX? I
don't know if Uwe has this in his discography....but it is him.
One last thing....from the Almost Digital CD on Hypnotism
(tel: 011-49-911-9337744) the first track was originally done for a 3D
video sampler from Optic Kiss that Uwe did for me....never thought it would
be on CD......the CD is one of his best......
Well that's more than enough for now.....sorry if this was too long for
some of you.....
Just one more thing....I was putting together a CD-ROM of stuff I'd done in
Germany featuring tons of stuff from Uwe...it also has material from
Redeye, Pyromania, Station Rose, Rising High, Superstition Records, Groove
magazine, the rom was never quite finished...I still have the material and
have thought about releasing it...but don't know if there's an interest on
the publics part......it basically covers Frankfurt from 1991 to 1994...oh
yeah there are also sections on pod, delirium, optic kiss (us) and other
stuff...

A definite must have!!
Atom Heart never dissapoints live and this is NO EXCEPTION!! I happened
to obtain both tracks by way of two different cd's. Electronique is
contained on a compilation cd called "UMM IN PROGRESS:CODE 1 on the UMM
label out of Italy. It is without question the best live Atom Heart track I
have ever heard!! The track builds in the same fashion as B2 only alot
quicker with this intense swash of delays and other effects that produce an
almost "physical" assult on the listener. Amazing!! The second track
"Electronikka" is featured on the Rsing High 2 cd compilation "The Secret
Life of Trance 2" and also features the likes of Sequential, 4Voice, Hearts
of Space and Dreamfish among others. The track here is quite different in
nature in that it is very dissonate. The track begins with an event
promoter speaking in French and English and at one point someone in the
crowd yells "Fuck the Police" and the promoter does the same.. Very odd. It
is a quite interesting track. In other words..if you can find the cd's or
the 12"..buy it!!

Yes! I'm sure many of us have that one... It has a particularly
pretty cover for a Fax sublabel disc.... quite similar to
A Day in the Park (visually, not musically).
I gotta say "hear hear" to this recommend, BTW. Arizona Tracks
has all kinds of quirky tactile sounds which cause all the
songs to continually morph into other songs. Not another disc
like it on Fax.

I heard from the dude at Synaptic that this Bitniks is now available on the

like 5-6 different releases from Hypno-whatever, each from different

Its Hypnotism and the Bitniks I have is on that label. The only other thing
I have on that label is Eyephone's "Evergreen" and its pretty amazing too.

What did we ever decide concerning the ee SURREAL release? Did this
full-length cd ever see the light of day, or was it just something that was

I know it was supposed to have been on POD, and that it was a
collaboration between Uwe and Olaf Finkbeiner (of PORNOTANZ and LASSIGUE
BENDTHAUS, and the N.G. Medien and POD labels)... but that's about it.

Can someone tell me the name of a comp of Atom Heart music. The cover art
has a greenish-purplish heart on it. This is all I remember (I borrowed a
friend's at one time, over a year ago) Haven't really seen it anywhere.
This comp had more 4onthefloor stylee techno from Uwe. One of the song's
keeps saying "it's about time, it's about time, it's about, it's a, it's
about to move right now!" I know you guys know what this is
While we're at it. I love Morphogenetic Fields. What would you say he has

That would be the _Pod Communications presents Atom Heart_ CD. As I
remember, it was released in the US on Sonic, which at the time was a
sublabel of Instinct. No new material is being released on Sonic (AFAIK),
but that CD should be available through Instinct still.

I'm confused, is this other people mixing AHeart, or Aheart mixing other
people? speaking of mixes, isn't the Laswell remix disc, on which Aheart
does a mix, scheduled to come out this month on Sub Rosa?

Reminds me of the Hafler Trio's "Who Sees Goes On" series of 7 10"s, all
priced near $70 (isn't collector's item!) It's about time an artist cashed
in on their own obscurity! (though it does limit the poor chaps like I
from ever owning one, but eh?)
btw--anyone ever trade with Thad Biggerstaff (from this list) before? I'm
getting quick irked in that it's been 2 weeks and my package hasn't
come, nor does he respond to my e-mails. bah! trader-beware, I
suppose!
btw(2)--I've only read 2 reviews of _FonoSandwich_ and both placed it
rather beneath _Senor Coconut_ in quality. Anyone think otherwise?

Just wanted to chime in with a different opinion.
I think my reaction to Senor Coconut was at a similar level of enthusiasm
as your reaction to Fonosandwich. Senor Coconut sounds more inspired to me
than anything he's put out in a year or more. It's the sound of the joy
and bewilderment of being immersed in a new culture. For long stretches
I'd stop thinking how it was done and just enjoy it -- I get the same inner
smile as when I first heard "The Race" or "Koladi Ola" by Yello. And that's
a point where his music hasn't taken me for some time.
Fonosandwich has some fine moments (c.u.e. mentioned track #4), but on the
whole it made me think of Machine Paisley -- half excellent, half noodly
hodgepodge seasoned with a bit of salsa. But there is a certain pop-
art/trash-art thing happening here that's starting to come through more
clearly -- enough to excuse and explain a vocal non-hook like "the real
color of vitamin C is probably brown".
Speaking of which, anyone else think track one ("...vitamin C...") sounds
like an adaptation of "The Future" by Prince, for the long-promised-but-
unreleased album of cover versions?

This is the best Atom Heart record in ages. Mono tm, Lisa Carbon and Senor
Coconut have finally imploded into the white hot spot of inescapably
slippery electro-salsa gravity that we all knew Schimdt would eventually
invent.
Maybe having Bisk and Elfish Echo breathing so hot and heavy on his heels
has made him take the race a little more seriously? Perhaps it was being
shown up by Dandy Jack on his own label? Whatever the reason, all but two
of these tracks are so fierce you'll embarass yourself roaring like a lion
with your headphones on. If you only buy five Atom Heart records this
year, make sure this is one of them.
