I've found a trick in Logic Audio which may allow me to quickly and easily
grab the data and split it up into individual .wav files. If I do this,
can someone provide some webspace? There's a lot of silence and redundant
info on the disc, but it will still be a lot of data to transfer from one
machine to another.
I assume that everyone is encouraged to use, manipulate and reuse the
sounds on _Cloned: Binary_, but I have no intention of pirating anything
or appearing to do so. If anyone reading this sees a problem, please let
me know. I won't get to this right away cos I've got cover art to finish
(the results are good but I don't technically know what I'm doing) and
perhaps some tweaking to do for a forthcoming CD (finally).
I've owed Uwe a letter for a long time, so I'll get to that and ask him
about _Cloned: Binary_. Common courtesy and all that.
As for Roger Tubesound: I'm waiting for my copy from Ear/Rational. Don't

"Built" is really nothing at all like "Plane". If anything, it's more
like +N's second album "ex.S". In fact, "Plane" might as well be another
AERIAL SERVICE AREA release as they each share the same members (well,
minus Niko Heyduck) and came out around the same time. Minimal trancey
ambient-ish stuff... but you already know that. More Victor Sol than Uwe
Schmidt really.
On the other hand, "Built" incorporates a lot of weird little clicks
and bloops as well but into a more experimental and undefinable brew. Lots
of little RESIDENTS-type excursions throughout, and nice screwy surprises.
Pretty much the entire album flows without any breaks in between each
track. The closest R.I. album to compare it to would be "Mu" by MASTERS OF
PSYCHEDELIC AMBIANCE. This one's definitely more Uwe than Sol... with
guest collaborations by Niko Heyduck and Chris Watson (ex-Cabaret
Voltaire).
To add... I'd have to say that "Built" is one in a trio of Uwe's more
recent experimental output of albums. The other two being "Ondas" by
DATACIDE, and "Brown" by BROWN. Put all three on `shuffle' in your mega-cd
changer and blow some nice chimp sauce. Yeah baby. ;}

I personally would love if you would make these sounds available for public
consumption. If you do break it up into separate .wav files, you might
also think about .mp3 files as well, to save space. Also, do you
personally have a DAT machine or a CD-R? If so, would it be possible for
me to get a copy of said disk? I would prefer CD-R but can use DAT as
well. Let me know; of course, I can compensate you for your time and
materials.
By the way, I'm a new addition to this list. Hello to all. My name is
John (Mr. Tangent) and I'm 25, living in Missouri. I listen to electronic
music in the dark ambient/ambient/idm/industrial/experimental/ebm vein and
have fallen quite in love with Lassigue Bendthaus. I also like Atom Heart
and what little Datacide stuff I've heard, although my exposure to the non-
Bendthaus material is limited as of yet. I make music myself with my
Kurzweil K2000S and various computer software and outboard gear. No
releases yet. So, hello to all and I hope to learn a lot of new
information about Uwe and his music. Bye.

Regarding this CD and the contents:
Please don't ask if I will make a copy for you. I'd love to share damn-
near-impossible-to-find music, but it's a slippery slope. I'm hardly able
to keep up with stuff like sending out demos and cleaning up someone's nth-
generation live tapes for possible "officially unofficial" release.
Next, I'll have to look for the MACOS logo on the disc (I could swear it's
MACOS product). If so, to create an archive shouldn't be a problem.
However I want to be sure. Can another MACOS member address this (someone
who knows the rules better than I do)? Otherwise I do want to contact Uwe
directly -- which as I said, I've been meaning to do anyway.
Take a look at: http://www.icomm.ca/macos/
Making .mp3 files of _Cloned: Binary_ would defeat the purpose. MPEG Layer
III audio uses a perceptual encoding scheme. The files are smaller because
the encoder cuts out less-important information to stay within a given
bitrate. The CD isn't music, it's source sounds at 44.1KHz. Well, OK,
there are a handful of extra loops.
The disc contains sounds and some sequences used in the production of
_Cloned_. It has a section for each of the tracks (most anyway), plus some
more sounds, many of which are already in the section for a specific track.
So there's a lot of duplication. Plus each sound appears 3 times in a row.
If you boil all that down, I'd guess it's around 15MB, or maybe a little
more. I'm trying to remember how many 2MB banks I used -- but for various
reasons I had reduced the sample rate for kick drums and such. I won't do
that this time if for no other reason than it would complicate the project.
In short: hang on, it should be coming, at full bandwidth. Meanwhile, can
anyone offer some webspace?

Regarding your being busy, Mark, I fully understand. Do this at your
leisure. Also, I didn't mean to ask you to do something, if it's
inconvenient. Forgive my intrusion.
Yes, I hope that the release in question is a fully authorized MACOS
product, that would simplify this whole issue greatly. I have no reason to
suspect that it's not a MACOS release. The whole idea of a sampler CD is
to SAMPLE, obviously. About the Mpeg Layer III notion, I personally would
enjoy a wav file more. I was simply offering the mp3 idea as a means to
lessen the space required to store these samples. But if they're as short,
in total length, as you say they are, then this shouldn't be a problem. In
fact, in retrospect, please keep it in wav format! If it's in mp3 format,
it'll be very hard to manipulate.
Concerning web space; I'm contacting a friend right now who runs his own
label and web site. He has yet to respond, but I'm pretty sure he'll be
willing to offer the web space. I'll get back to the list as soon as I
find out for sure.

Want a little latin injection in your IDM? Se§or Coconut is an interesting
twist on the latin music theme. You have all the cliche sounds and rhythms
that you hear in latin dance music mixed with interesting electronic sounds
and treatments. Listening to this release makes me think of cha cha line
dancing and Ricki Ricardo (50's latin music). There's almost a kind of
humor that is not too overt in this.
Se§or Coconut does not sound cheezy like you might think though, there's
always enough unique, original content to keep your interest. I like it
because it's different.

I know that Atom Heart's Mac can sing, but did anyone know

Actually, "Cloned: Binary" was released *prior* to the creation of MACOS.
However, I understand that Uwe considers it in the same catagory as a MACOS
product.

About this... what amount of space exactly do you need? I may be able to
accommodate you on the MACOS website if it isn't over, say 5MB. Small, I
know, but it's all I can offer. Lemme know, k?

Guess what? Another Atom Heart release is out, go figure. This one is
subtitled "Excursions in Digital Jazz", so you can guess the theme. The
theme in this case is not hit quite as often, nor as impressively, as the
one on _Se§or Coconut_, but when it is it is quite interesting. Only
AHeart could combine bleeps and bloops with upright bass as well as this.
Plus the "extra, non-theme" tracks are better than the standard AHeart
stuff that finds it's way onto these releases. Maybe it'd be worthwhile
though to hold off for the 2nd or 3rd in this new "Don't Fuck With The
Stars!" (fun name!) series to see if the mark gets hit more? Fairly good
though, with nice cover art.
btw--I'm looking to trade _Real Intelligence 1 and 2_ (Rather Interesting
Compilations) and Swamp Terrorists 2cd "Get O." ep (w/ 2 Lassigue
Bendthaus mixes), if anyones interested.

Tetsu just left for Chile last week to join up with Uwe and Hosono to
record the next HAT album. They are probably still recording it as I write
this. Maybe it will come out on Daisy World first but I would expect that
it will come out on Rather Interesting too.

Rather Interesting's Latino trilogy was:
1. RI040 Dandy Jack and the Plastic Woman
2. RI041 Lisa Carbon - Trio De Janeiro
3. RI042 Se§or Coconut
Fonosandwich (RI043) was not part of this and since you're asking, most of

a2.machine (you are a remix)
b1.machine (you are not an atom heart remix)
b2.machine (you are a john tejada mix)
matt haines follows up the engaging and varied "there goes the boom" 12"
with 4 versions of one track one side being matt's with two versions
retaining the base melody in distinctly different contexts and the other
being a suite of remixes. matt has a densely syncopated approach to
dancefloor tracks that make the drum patterns melodic in their own right -
cut up electro cleanly interlocking snatches of patches in textural
conversation. "you are not a remix" is a hectic rhythm workout with
digital orchestra rants (perhaps in homage to the bombastic breakdowns of
the jonzun crew and fellow socal'ers uncle jamm's army), while "you are a
remix" is a sparser replay based around boogied up basslines and a bleep-
era atonalized theme, uncompleted by a snare-roll achilles heel. atom
heart remixes the track along the lines of this last mix, duplicating the
melody in bass with jeepy rhythm and erratic squirts of farty goodness.
the mix cuts loose midway through with a sample from steve poindexter's
"work that mutha fucker" (muzique MR-001) anchoring the dancefloor before
breaking down toward the end with an glorious skronk-beat mess. stark and
sweet. the label says there's also a john tejada mix, but all i could find
was a heavily reverbed bootleg of model 500's "night drive (thru babylon)"
(metroplex M-002). 7/10

the first datacide cd on Pod is quite different from the others..very 303
laden noisy whereas datacide 2 (fax) & Flowerhead (RI/Asphodel) are
powerful chill works..and imo the greatest..while Ondas is a bit more
experimental..a bit more to the liking of MU..

SEOR COCONUT is Uwe Schmidt solo as far as we can tell.
I don't know of a new DATACIDE project. Keep your eyes out for a new
HAT album though (if you're looking for a new Inoue/Schmidt collaborative
effort - along with Hosono of course). Speaking of, wasn't there supposed

I don't know if I'd call _Roger Tubesound Ensemble_ a "must have". It's
good, but spotty at times, so.... From your list I can say this:
_Se§or Coconut_ is the latin cd, which is never spotty and very very good.
(The digital jazz is RTE...at times!)
_Machine Paisley_ is a hodge podge of good things, especially the last
track "Copacabana Palace", which also appears on RI2...so you may want to
get that instead [The Real Intelligence compilations work as nice
introductions to AHeart's work].
_Mono TM_ is very good "urban" music. "Urban" refering to hip hop style,
sorta. Electro funk of sorts. (Where not talking "mad Kid Koala jam on 2
turntables" here, but you get the idea perhaps...) Except for one more
"ambient" track, which really doesn't fit, but oh-well.
My favorites would be:
_Se§or Coconut_, +N-_Built_, _Silver Sound 60_, _Flextone_ and _HAT_...but
then again if you collected different peoples "favorite" lists, pretty soon
every AHeart cd would be listed!

I would have to say that he did a fine job making a unique....uhhhhh....

But I've heard that this album is pretty good.
Secondly, who is Hosono? Is the HAT album jazzy-housey-stuff then?. I've

Built (being the 3rd +N) is full of choppy unpredictable beats
and some melodies to fill in the corners...so to speak. Not
much ambience really, but the occasionaly wierd speachbyte will
hold you over. Krautrock? A whole other ballpark indeed.
> Secondly, who is Hosono? Is the HAT album jazzy-housey-stuff then?.
Hosono (Haruomi, Harold, Harry) is the guy from Yellow Magic
Orchestra. I'm sure someone with more backround on him can fill
you in. But as for HAT, which is short for Highly Active
Textures, or Highly Advanced Technology, or Haruomi Atom Tetsu,
or Hyper Active Textures, is really a fun disc. No house, some
jazz, but bleeped out jazz with crazy jiggley-freq solos (ie
Organic Mango) and even some quasi-wierd breaks (Quick Ecs).
Recomended! Also, they're together again making HAT2 RIGHT NOW!!
On the Tetsu front, i recently acquired the second Electro
Harmonix (nods to Jeff and Lauralee) and DAMN this is a good disc.
Hard to describe, but this sounds more to me like Flowerhead and
MU rather than the first Electro Harmonix disc. Review to follow.

are you talking about _instant replay_? it was my impression this *was* the
second electro harmonix, just under a different name. i still have only a

is some stunningly beautiful music on there. if anybody has any idea where

Speaking of +N, whats it like ? I've heard so much about it..including the
review of it in MFTEQ(which didnt tell too much..) is it more towards LB,

if we're still referring to "built," (since there are what, 3 or 4 +n
discs?) i'll just finally chime in here. "built" is the most varied uwe
album i've heard. he puts rather different tracks next to each other in a
way that seems haphazard (if you're trying to discern the overall
organizing principle), but flows really well. it's pretty sparse, in
#sounds per track, but they are well arranged, and very electronic. you
might say "of course" to the last one, but something like "Se§or Coconut"
is not so digital sounding. i don't know if all l.b. is distorto-industrial
- if so, "built" is more towards AH.

I think +N leans more toward the alienating Victor/Niko sound.
The sound is usually pretty deconstructionist ie strange
"experimental" rhythmic sequences and more simplistic melodies
which completely drop out every now and then. Ex.s sounds more
industrialish dance the other two (Chris & Cosey & Caberet
Voltaire all help out on a track or two). All include some
segments of what sounds like completely random soundbytes of
various things from chirping coocoo birds to ambiguous snippets
of songs ("Can I Have Some Money"). Some of these segments are
pretty interesting, though, like "Freud" on ex.s ... what exactly
is going on there, eh?
Eric said:
> "built" is more towards AH.
I agree. I recognize a lot of drum sounds on Built that AH tends
to use on a few other releases (JC2), whereas Plane sounds more
like he gave the other guys free reign and control over what
went on. Also, Built seems to be the least mechanical sounding of
the 3 albums... songs like Watson have some nice melodies!

Ah. Someone who truly appreciates goooood electronic music.
Anyway, yeah Softcore's pretty damn hip. One of Uwe's earlier/mid-
period releases... quite hard to come by actually. If you've got a lead on
one you oughta snatch it up. I'm sure you could trade it if you didn't
take to it - although I'm sure you will.
As far as Jet Chamber goes though, there are three different releases.
The first two explore the trancey/ambientish side of the Namlook/Schmidt
experience, while the third (my favorite of the trio) incorporates a
surprising amount of good tranced-out bleeps and bloops with drum&bass
neatness. A nice acoustic guitar excursion also works its way in and out
of some of the tracks - this works very well actually.
My further suggestions for Uwe Schmidt albums (if you haven't tried
them already): "Shellglove" by ATOM HEART, "Gran Baile Con..." by SEOR
COCONUT, "Polyester" by THE LISA CARBON TRIO, "Orange" by ATOM HEART, "60"
by SILVER SOUND, "Mono Trademark" by MONO TM, "Render" and "Render
Audible: US Remixes" both by LASSIGUE BENDTHAUS, and on and on and on...

This is a determined Atom Heart release. Much of it wouldn't sound out of
place on a Black Dog record. Cacophonous rhythms, melodious interludes,
off-kilter noises, occasional ambience, this is a very purposeful disc.
While the experimentation level here is not particularly high and the
"tools" are familiar, the result is rather admirable and likable anyways.
It's a nice change of pace from the "noodling" we've become accustomed to
in some of the recent RI releases, very precise and complex.
"Shell" is truly a kick-ass rhythm track. "Helicon Valley" is a well-
placed ambient space, very pretty. The shuffling "Mellow Sequence" is my
favorite, and it also happens to be the most RI-ish of the bunch (along
with "Marimba Suave"), mis-steppin' blippiness (plus a surprise
"traditional" instrument!). "Nautre Bypass Biology" is a droney workout,
hypnotic and sublime.
Definitely a solid entry in the AH library. Not spectacluar, but
deliberately engaging and complete.

I'll second Lance's recommendation of the IT picture disk, Era Vulgaris
Ncoded. (I picked this up because I was thinking it was affiliated with
Interdimensional Transmissions. It's not.)
A remix album in ridiculously limited quantities (555--neighbor of the
beast), of someone--Ivan Iusco (apparently Italian) called It. The
record's a picture disk, but it's a pity they chose such a cheesy design.
I won't elaborate on that further than mentioning that colorschemes like
this one--rainbow technicolor--smack of bad trance records and rub me quite
the wrong way. A fine thing, then, to discover a really, really
interesting piece of music. Notes on the remixers' versions:
1. Nebula (Elvio Trampus). Percussive, fairly driving; punctuated with
synth stabs and a nifty vocal sample i can't make out.
2. Lassigue Bendthaus. A mellowish, Clear-like (or Dot-like) vibe with
plenty of subtle complexities that keep it from slipping into
complacency. Nice piano touches.
3. Red Sector A (Madel). Mid-tempo, a little plodding; a minor-key chord
progression that turns into a new-wavey arpeggio. Sounds like the
closing-credits music to an 80s teen flick. That may be good or bad,
depending on your point of view.
4. Attrition (Martin Bowers). Again, melodic, a little new-wavey, a little
middle-of-the-road.
5. Monomorph (Fabrizio d'Arcangelo). A standout track: David
Kristianesque, clattery drum'n'bass. Off-putting & frenetic. Too bad
that this is the only track on my copy that skips. :( (Is this the same
fellow as Rephlex's D'Arcangelo?)
6. The Black Dog (Ken Downie). Lo-fi and dubby like I might expect to find
on a Leaf or Lo record. Heavy on the reverb, the minor-key strings
hovering in the wings of the last track are here put to a more emphatic,
but just as ominous, effect.
7. Lustmord (Brian Lustmord). another standout. i can't say why--it
doesn't do anything particularly notable or radical, but it's dark and
ominous and dubby and yet with cheesy overtones that just somehow work.
also features the mactalker voice (you know: from "bleeecccchhhh")
saying "saturate the system, let the darkness fall," all distorted and
dubbed out, and it's pretty fucking funny. in fact, i just realized, it
even says, over and over, "dub," with heavy reverb treatment, which is
funnier yet.
8. Astral Body (Aldo Bergamasco). Squelchy techno with some likeness to C.
Vogel, perhaps. Dry and driving and set against a faint backdrop of
subtle, luminous harmony. Another fine track. I also found it to mix
quite nicely between a track by Suction, into something off the new Plug
Research 2x12" comp. Just to give you an idea of the vein it's in.
Overall, if you see it--pick it up.
