Orange you would be very lucky to find nowadays, Shellglove
would prolly be a bit easier to find.
Incidently, i have an extra Softcore here in fine condition
that i would trade for Mono TM or Brown. Email me if
anyone's interested. Thanks.

Sorry to add to the apparent mythology surrounding this disc but I have to
say it is rather excellent. Ive had about enough of FAX in the past and
was, by extension, not too keen on trying out RI (Brown soon put paid to
that). Orange is something of an isolationist masterpiece. The first track,
One Atom Second, starts with a voice saying the title inside a vast cavern
and it suddenly builds into a kind of droning track that is cold but
intriguing. For my money the last track is one of AH's best - sound pulses
shooting off into the left then right speaker - some beats !! - and all
over the place. Very interesting - cerebral music definitely.

Very very difficult.
I know there is someone offering a vinyl promo of Flextone. I haven't seen
a CD of it for sale or trade in a very long time.
Coeur Atomique crops up very occasionally, but at extortionate Fax-
collector prices.
That said, both are very well worth seeking out. That classic mix of
ambience, beats, noises and occasional humor is all there. If I could only
own one, I'd give the nod to Flextone; it's a more solid recording overall.

before launching it's ill-fated us-reissue thingy with instinct records,
fax released a compilation domestically via reflective, jonah sharp's label
based in san francisco. (reflective went under last year.) pete toured
through sf in 1994 and 1995, which also led to his relationship with
charles edwards, charlie's opportunity to begin making music, and his role
as a domestic distribution point for fax. and of course pete and jonah
have recorded two albums together, as well... charlie picked the tracks for
"ambiento," i think. (little known fax fact: charlie referred to himself
as Charlie Ambiento for a while, right around the time the comp was
released.) you can still find "ambiento" in stores.

I've found something out over the last couple of days..... Atom Heart makes
being at work alot more bearable. The head chemist where I work is out
this week and has left me to run the lab and with no one else in there, I
figured I'd bring in some cds to listen too. I've noticed that when I put

The disc is primarily hard, cerebral techno, in line with his older style
(as demonstrated on the 'I' discs, or some of the POD comp). Not excellent
beginning-to-end, but there surely are several way-above-decent tracks --
especially the 1st.

Hi Folks,
Can you please post this to the Atom Heart mailing list?
Some info for you all about the Atom Heart tape he has donated to our
cat@log.
The tape is a C60 containing two 30 min sets he did in Australia on his
1996 tour we helped organise.
Side one is the live set from Club Filter in Melbourne
Side two is the live set from Club Filter in Sydney
They are live and direct to DAT tape. We then (slightly) cut them down to
fit the 2x30min format. The cassetts are dubbed direct from the digital
edit DATS.
The cost is $10 Australian (or equivalent in your cash). This includes
postage. Please make all cheques out to "Catalyst". For Postal Money
orders its easier to make them out to me in my role as catalog secretary
"John Jacobs". if cash is easier for you, conceal it well and Australian
dollars are preferred, but what ever you can manage is ok.
Cat@lyst is a community activist web site.
You can check out our pages at www.cat.org
We are proudly independant and are self funding. One way we raise money is
by asking DJs and live acts to donate tapes to our cat@log. Atom Heart is
one of the artists who has kindly lent his support to our cause.
You can check out our cat@log on line at www.cat.org/catalog or send me
your snail mail address and I'll send you a copy of our latest listing plus
a free copy of my anarcho techno band, Non Bossy Posse's, givaway tape.
I hope this has been usefull for Atom Heart fans
Cheers John.

Here Here.
Well, once again I'm going to cast my vote for best (IDM) album of
1997 in the IDM polls as being an Uwe Schmidt dealie. Personally, I'd like
to see SENOR COCONUT appear there somewhere.
Right now the nominations portion of the Polls are going on - this
will end on Saturday the 20th at 2pm Pacific, and after that comes the
actual voting. Basically this is a call to all of you to *at least* put a
nomination in for either "Trio De Janeiro" or "Gran Baile Con..." (yeah, I
know there were a few more, but they were pretty weak compared to these two
heavyweights).
Anyway, if anyone needs the voting rules/entry form, please let me
know and I'll forward it to them. C'mon chimpies, don't procrastinate! ;}

May be going against the grain here, but "Pentatonic Surprise" was
pretty impenetrable - some nice sounds, some nice rhythms but too
many "free/fusion" moments. On the other hand, "Fonosandwich" was
much more "together" - a more spontaneous and less contrived feel
altogether than "....Surprise".
Any word on what's next up from Uwe?

Not quite - it's Bill Laswell and a bunch of Tibetans chanting. Some
people swear by this, but I think it's only pretty good. Spooky and
drony, for the most part.

not Uwe. This is Bill Laswell on LOW, his own label that was running
(secretly) under FAX. The correct title is "Somma - Hooked Light Rays"
which was the second and last release for a long time now on this label.
The Laswell/Axiom web site describes it as, "Ambient dub translations of
Tibetan monks, recorded in Milan, Italy and finished in New York City."
http://www.hyperreal.org/music/labels/axiom/imports.html
The first LOW release was "Bill Laswell: Silent Recoil: Dub System One.
Deep dub meets the cocktail lounge, with dark ambient echoes closing." I
really liked both of these and was sad that this label never took off.
Both releases are pretty rare now so I'd say grab a copy if you like any of
Bill's stuff.

An odd blend of Yamaha Home Organ and very synthetic noises. It was
enjoyable but not a disc I think about too often, sorry to say. The "free/
fusion" aspect is perhaps a bit too clinical. Either that or not cheesy
enough (could be brie or feta, not just cheddar). I see a small thread from
this to _Mono Trademark_. The difference for me is _Mono_ sets up strong
contrasts between the rhythmic sections and the "electro graffiti"
sections. "Digital Jazz" or not, this cat doesn't swing -- tightness
through looseness. That isn't a problem unless put in the foreground, as
it was on _Pentatonic Surprise_.

I recently managed to get myself a Senor Coconut. It is very good indeed.
However, I didnt go a bundle on the Polyester of Lisa Carbon fame whose
noodlings on the moog drove me slightly crazy. I was constantly focused on
the programmed bassy bits rather than the freeform 'jazz' bits which I
found a bit grating. So....should I get Trio or is it more of the same?
Where can I find a ggod review of Fonosandwich?
Is anyone willing to part with a cd of Flextone for fifty dollars?

Peace to all in this period of materialist madness.

Yeah, It's Bill Laswell and some monks. To me, it sounds like Enigma
without a hit single. And it isn't really dub at all, except for the reverb
on the monks' voices. If anyone wants my copy, lemme know and I'll send you
my want-list.

Now THIS was a great disc! Just as good as Automaton "Dub Terror

I keep hearing people say the "Silver Sound 60" CD is
unavailable. It's possible that RI/FAX has now sold
out of these CDs, but there should still be some
downstream in the supply chain somewhere.
Does anyone out there know what the limitation of CD
pressings of this and other RI CD pressings have been,
or is there even a set limitation (ala FAX) of RI
pressings at all? If the CUE could emerge from the
continuum to comment on these matters it would help.

sorry to say it, but i just don't think uwe had it together this year.
maybe it was the move. maybe it was too much latin jazz and not enough
electro. his output in 1996 (when he _did_ get my vote for best artist) was
almost above reproach, but too many artists have caught up with him (bisk,
elfish echo, nonplace urban field, jeswa, among others), while he's stood
relatively still. _senor coconut_ is without a doubt one of the top 10
albums of the year, but overall i'd say he's slipping.
don't get me wrong. i still think many of atom heart's releases are near
the top of the list when it comes to important, innovative forces in post-

longer this year, and, quite frankly, he didn't have much to do with why.

It's rhythmic and ambient at the same time. Not too much different from
RI releases like _Semiacoustic Nature_ -- the plink-plonk of the 808-based
rhythm and the bleep-blops that go with it. I think it's a standout in
that style though.
> Also, can anyone offer any opinions of Shellglove and what Uwe's up to

This goes from repetitive techno rhythms, fast-but-subdued to mellow, to
monochrome ambient, to subdued techno that recalls a much-calmer Download,
or the most disjointed Atom Heart material. Tracks run from one to the
next. For the time and money, you might get 2 other CDs though.
Definitely get Senor Coconut!

The description here is right on, but I thought I'd differ on the
conclusion by saying that it's one of my fave AH discs so far. Now, I'm
new to Uwe, and only have 13 discs by the guy (which would be a whole
discography for most other reasonably-prolific artists), but I really do
like the more-focused "techno" direction of this release...great driving
music.
BTW, for the sake of reference, these are the AH discs I own:
+N (Atom Heart) - Built
Atom Heart - Shellglove
Bitniks, The (Atom Heart) - Halograms
Brown (Atom Heart) - Brown
Datacide (Tetsu Inoue and Atom Heart) - Flowerhead
Datacide (Tetsu Inoue and Atom Heart) - Ondas
Fonosandwich (Atom Heart) - Fonosandwich
HAT (Atom Heart, Haruomi Hosono, and Tetsu Inoue) - HAT
Interactive Music (Atom Heart) - Interactive Music
Jet Chamber (Pete Namlook and Atom Heart) - Jet Chamber II
Jet Chamber (Pete Namlook and Atom Heart) - Jet Chamber III
Lassigue Bendthaus (Atom Heart) - Overflow CD5
Machine Paisley (Atom Heart) - Machine Paisley
That'll give any reader an idea of where I'm coming from regarding my
familiarity with this small part of the AH repertoire....

odd...The Roger Tubesound Ensemble wasn't on the list? (or is it not very
odd afterall!)
Happy Holidays to y'all.

Subject: (atom) softcore/shellglove
Hi everyone,
I know these were discussed on the list not too long ago...I musn't have
been paying attention
Because Softcore is on FAX, is it generally an ambient one rather than
rhythmic?
Also, can anyone offer any opinions of Shellglove and what Uwe's up to
on this one?
Any replies appreciated,
Toby

It's rhythmic and ambient at the same time. Not too much different from
RI releases like _Semiacoustic Nature_ -- the plink-plonk of the 808-based
rhythm and the bleep-blops that go with it. I think it's a standout in
that style though.

Is this stuff archived someplace?

Softcore is beaty but pretty mellow.
Sorta reminds me of IF, but not dubby sounding.
Quite excellent!!!

The description here is right on, but I thought I'd differ on the
conclusion by saying that it's one of my fave AH discs so far. Now, I'm
new to Uwe, and only have 13 discs by the guy (which would be a whole
discography for most other reasonably-prolific artists), but I really do
like the more-focused "techno" direction of this release...great driving
music.
BTW, for the sake of reference, these are the AH discs I own:
+N (Atom Heart) - Built
Atom Heart - Shellglove
Bitniks, The (Atom Heart) - Halograms
Brown (Atom Heart) - Brown
Datacide (Tetsu Inoue and Atom Heart) - Flowerhead
Datacide (Tetsu Inoue and Atom Heart) - Ondas
Fonosandwich (Atom Heart) - Fonosandwich
HAT (Atom Heart, Haruomi Hosono, and Tetsu Inoue) - HAT
Interactive Music (Atom Heart) - Interactive Music
Jet Chamber (Pete Namlook and Atom Heart) - Jet Chamber II
Jet Chamber (Pete Namlook and Atom Heart) - Jet Chamber III
Lassigue Bendthaus (Atom Heart) - Overflow CD5
Machine Paisley (Atom Heart) - Machine Paisley
That'll give any reader an idea of where I'm coming from regarding my
familiarity with this small part of the AH repertoire....

p.s. - Here's a question I've got, since I'm listing out my AH stuff --
is Almost Digital by Uwe, or by Uwe and some other collaborator(s)? If
so, add it to the list above...

Say it ain't so! I agree that Fonosandwich and Roger Tubesound are
uneven, but each of them has some first-rate stuff on it. (I think we're
spoiled.)

Hmmm - the point emerges (and I'll concede it). But who's jeswa?

Well, as long as *this* is understood. (And if "Supertropical" isn't the
track of the year, I quit.)

bisk?? bisk?? I have "time", and it can't even compare.. and I only
have BASS, which certainly isn't "all that" even though it is pretty
darn good. (I'm always on the lookout for more, but I suppose that
goes without saying)
are you thinking of time or another bisk album? has bisk changed
dramatically, or what?
