jeswa is joshua kay. he's released one four-track 12-inch ep ("skone")

partner romulo del castillo) as soul oddity and phoenecia, but nothing by
either of them compares in composition or development. seek this out at all

i'm thinking of _time_ and the newer _strange or funny-haha?_ (sub rosa,
1997). both of these albums develop ideas first found in atom heart's music
(the incorporation of jazz-styled improvisational elements at the level of
compositional form; the sophisticated integration of stylistic components
in a sort of nomadic music context in which none can be said to dominate),
and achieve a broader and overall denser emotional and conceptual effect.
in these respects i look at atom heart (the rather interesting stuff,
mostly) as the innovation and bisk (and nuf, elfish echo, etc.) as the
refinement (although bisk has a dozen or so innovations to his credit, as
well). _strange or funny-haha?_ in particular seems to me a next-step of
sorts for experimental electronic music.

Well.
I just finally got the "The Secret Life Of Trance Volume 2" double-cd
through a trade the other day and noticed something odd. I primarily was
interested in this compilation for the PINK ELLN & ATOM HEART song, but
upon listening to the rest of the tracks my ears peaked up at one point.
Track #5 on Disc 1 is a song called "Transformation" by TRANSFORM. It
sounds almost *exactly* like ATOM HEART's song "2005" off of his "Mother"
12". The same "da da da da da da da" OPUS III-type female vocals over a
nice slow building trance piece. In fact, there is almost no difference at
all between the ATOM HEART and TRANSFORM tracks.
Upon reading through the compilation's liner notes I noticed that
TRANSFORM is the alias for the collaboration between RESISTANCE D (who also
goes under the names of Pascal F.E.O.S., HEARTS OF SPACE, and DJ F.E.O.S.)
and TRANSFORM (whoever that is?). Anyway, Pascal had done a few things
with Uwe back in his POD-era days, so I figured that might be where the
connection is.
Now, TRANSFORM isn't yet another Uwe Schmidt alias is it?

Also, on that Atom Heart & Pink Elln track, which is allegedly
recorded live, the announcer doesn't introduce Uwe as "Atom Heart,"
he introuces Uwe as "I" (a different Uwe alias) for some reason.

Twak Wist:
Ambient Head
Meditation Bank
Head Dance
Automatic Composition #1 (i can't remember if it's one or 2...)
Acid Magic
Data Haiku
The Fax Datacide is a little rougher sounding than either
Flowerhead or Ondas, there's even a 303 acid riff and 4otF
rhythm during Head Dance. But as for the rest of it: ranges from
thickly layered patterns of quasi-chaotic note loops cleverly
worked into catchy melodies to contemplative moments of waaay out
spaceliness. Except for track 1, all the songs blend into each
other. The unpredictable whistle from 60's Out of Tune first
appeared here on Meditation Bank, although slightly altered and
surrounded by completely different elements then those of 60's
OoT. Acid Magic has become one of my favorite Datacide tracks...
wierd bulbous drones and a muted 303. Perfect for any post-rave
prestidigitation. Datacide II has a nice fractal on the cover,
which couldn't be more appropriate. Data Haiku, also on the
Cookbook/FaxComp, ends the album and is the most mellow track.
Polyrhythmic Textures. This is futuristic lo-fi.

I disagree. I really don't like many of the early RI titles, and here's
why: On Flextone, VSVN, and especially Dots, many of the tracks seem like
an attempt to fill time; one or two loops repeated for seven or more
minutes, or the same idea repeated nine time to make it album length. After
hearing everything from VSVN up to BASS, I can't help but wish he had
waited a year, picked one track from each album, worked on each one for
longer than a month, and present one, rich album worth of music.
I got frustrated by around Bitniks and AD. I went back and listened to
the Lassigue Bendthaus albums, which he did work on for years each, and I
could see an enormous difference. Put "Render" next to "Halograms". The
latter is faceless and generic-sounding by comparison. The difference is
huge; only one of them holds up as an album, the other is just another
collection of sketches and rough ideas for unfinished songs.
Now, before you respond with "Hey, but, um, I LIKE 'Halograms'!", let me
say this: It's nice that Uwe does release his music every month because it
allows his audience something most artists avoid: the chance to browse
through his sketchbook, to hear his evolution, and compare his progress and
spontaneous tangents. Proof that it's been worth it are his most recent RI
albums (from Machine Paisely on...), which, hopefully, are leading up to
one killer Lassigue Bendthaus album.
I also understand the appeal of the mythology he's created. By releasing
so much stuff, in such limited numbers, under so many names, he is inviting
people to "collect them all", making it sort of like a game. He's baited
people prone to collecting, and exploited that mentality. If VSVN was the
only thing he released, I really don't think he'd be able to sell 500
copies of it. But, as a complete concept, early Rather Interesting is like
a magazine, appearing at regular intervals and best assessed as a whole. I
don't think that's true anymore, though; Fonosandwich, Roger Tubesound,
Brown, Senor Coconut, are all very good albums. But I wouldn't spend so
much time hunting down the early stuff. (anyone find this list because they
were a big Urban Primitivism fan? I doubt it...)

I like those titles quite a bit. And VSVN, after all that's come since, is
still my favorite RI release, followed closely by Brown, MU, Mono TM and
BASS. I hardly find VSVN repetitive; it's subtle and transfixing,
experimental and engaging, a perfect blend of everything I like about RI.
I can't say I'm quite so enamored of the more recent RI forays as I am of
the earlier ones, my two favorite recent Uwe releases being Micropossessed
and Shellglove, neither an RI-er.
Dots and Flextone are no slouches either, though I understand when you
suggest that they have their not-so-interesting moments. I think Flextone
especially stands out as cohesive, without being samey.
My $.02.

None of the tracks are actually that simple, though. Even the most ambient
pieces on Dots are multi-layered, and although they change slowly they
develop in interesting and subtle ways. Granted, it's not the sort of
thing that everybody is going to want to listen to, but each track sounds
to me to be carefully constructed around a good set of ideas. Subsequent
releases are far less sparse anyway, so I assume this criticism isn't meant
to apply...so what's so bad about them?

But what similarity is there between, say, Afterwards, I Felt Better, and
Instant Replay, on Flextone? Or Dots (the track) and Spinout Segment? Or
VSVN #1 and #4?

Well, generally speaking I'm not so keen on these, but I don't suppose
there's anything particularly wrong with them, just not my cuppa tea
somehow.

They're not really that limited compared to the size of his audience, are
they? Not many of them have sold out, despite the small number
manufactured.
> He's baited people prone to collecting
Doesn't it happen with any artist that you really like some releases of,
that you have to try all of the others in case they're great too? Just one
of the risks of being into music, I thought. I doubt if there are many
people buying Atom Heart albums just in order to have a set, without even
liking any of his music.

Not sure what you're trying to say here. Presumably if there are Urban
Primitivism fans, they're going to want to try out the other Pod releases?
Maybe I've missed your point.

Odd, I quite enjoyed _Oscillations Remixed_. I was kinda bummed that I got

As for Pentatonic Surprise - this has to be the most cheesy cover I have
ever seen. Its difficult to seperate the music from that crap image which
haunts you while you listen. However as the disc wound on I thought some of
the tracks were actually pretty good. The stereo seperation is so complete
as to make to unlistenable on heaphones. Some of the looped jazz chords and
stuff are built into quite funky pieces but the earlier tracks are just a
bit too disjointed - kind of like jazz but just not there either in an
ironic or new form way. Up my own arse...probably!

I'm sure many will agree that this one is excellent. Starts off
kinda like Live at sel i/s/c, but evolves into more trance
territory no long after. The monolithic 303 and 808 drum sounds
eventually find their way in to a heavily layered environment of
drones, oscillating wave sweeps, and distant tribalism. 2
different live performances from Germany and Spain give you
different perspectives on a similar piece. All the information
about the equipment used and how it was used is printed on the
disc itself. Pretty cool.

I dig the binary amplified stuff onda headphones. It seemed
really out of balance at first, but i kinda enjoy it now.
It's good especially if your stereo is set up in an non-semetrical
way... sounds come from odd places in the room. :o
Is any of the recent jazz-fusion Atom Heart stuff (is Fono jazzy?)
as good as, say, Congo? Some great programming on that one.
Also, can anyone recommend stuff in the False Memories or K-Jam
style? I think he should do an entire album devoted to that
sound.

Subject: (atom) Review: Atom Heart - "Apart"
I recently purchased this 5-song CDEP (it took them over six weeks, but
CDEurope managed to get me a copy), and it mostly fits right in with its
labelmate, _Shellglove_. While the song titles indicate that you might be
listening to five "versions" of the same song, the truth is that all five
tracks are very different from each other.
"Apart 1" starts off with some seriously off-beat madness, and eventually
settles in with nicely-placed squelches and speedy propulsive elements in
a complex time. "Apart 2" is a bit slower, more clanky and bleepy. Ian
Pooley's mix sounds like a whole lot like Richard H Kirk mid-tempo trance
number with some Uwe-ish elements added, but it really does hold up over
ten minutes (like the best Kirk tracks do). Matthew Herbert's mix is a
moderate, contemplative shuffle, probably the weakest track here, as it
doesn't really go anywhere. Lisa Carbon's mix is a freeform latin-jazz-o-
rama, which shouldn't surprise anybody. :-) It's the only one that sounds
like a remix of one of the earlier tracks (in this case, "Apart 1").
So overall, I'd give this a high-quality rating. It probably doesn't need
the Herbert mix, as it drags down the mood and tempo a bit much, but I'd
have to say that I like this CD as much as the album that preceded it.
Seven out of ten.

The cover is a black background with a kind of multi couloured spiral going
into the background. Two multicouloured straight arms with hands play a
keyboard at the bottom of the inlay card. A small star (second hand
american car dealership style) spangled area in the corner proclaims this
to be an adventure in digital jazz.,

This is *much* more spatially seperated than bass or silver sound - the
last track is great - the signals switch over from let to righ just once
but its a nice effect. Its pretty strong on the impro sounding elements but
I prefer the more programmed sounding pieces.

While I recognize that CDEurope isn't the least expensive or fastest or
best CD store out there on the web, they have gotten quite a few things for
me that no other place has been able to get, "Apart" included. I have
ordered things off their web site that were supposed to be out of print or
otherwise hard to find, yet they were able to find me a copy. Yes,
sometimes they can't get things they have in their catalog, and sometimes
their prices are ridiculously high, and their web site is slow, and their
service isn't terribly quick (over 6 weeks for "Apart") but they've
delivered often enough to me that I can recommend them with the caveats I
mentioned here, and they take secure credit card orders over the web.
So if you want this CD, I suggest you get it from CDEurope
(http://www.cdeurope.com).

Indeed. But "Apart" was $13.95. Not cheap for a single, but it is 40
minutes long, and it is very good. *shrug* I'd be more than happy to
recommend somewhere else to get it, but I don't know of any.

Right on. Apart is usually about as hard to spot as Morpho.
Their listings are definitely strange though... i see a 12"
slotted for release on New Years Eve in 1999, and a few for
my birthday in 1927. Go figure :)
But that reminds me, i need Morphogenetic Fields and i have an
extra Dots. Anyone want to trade?
