hi everyone
ive completed the first round in a very modest "update" of the mother
mailing list web site.
we're still working out the details on converting the list archives into an
acceptable HTML format, which will eventually be the "beef" for the web
site.
but at any rate, all the archives are there, in unix mailbox format which
means you can download them and load em up in pine or in a text editor,
whatever you prefer.
the URL is http://www.hyperreal.org/music/lists/mother/
if there's anything you'd like to eventually see, let me know. one thing
i'm in the process of doing is pulling out the del haze entertainment

i finally heard a few of the cuts off of _world standard_ and to tell you
the truth was not all that impressed. of course, i'm still sweating to get
any of the daisy world stuff, if only for the cover art (the daisy world
version of _hat_, for instance, shows the "hat" logo on the ri version as a
massive crop circle, ala speedy j's _public energy no. 1_). t he tracks i
heard were by hosono and another artist whose name i forget. pretty samey
sampledelic electronic lounge stuff. extremely well-produced, of course,
but that's about it.

I'm pretty positive it's just pieces by each, not collaborations. Plus I'm
fairly certain the Atom Heart tracks are simply edits of pre-existing
tracks. Nothing overly new.
But that said, it should be a fairly good compilation none-the-less. I've
never seen it available in the States though.

I found this over Christmas. It is indeed edits/different mixes of
previously released tracks. Still a nice album, though.

Subject: (atom) deutscher funk [long]
I just picked up the CD compilation _Deutscher Funk_ on the U.S. Caipirinha
label and guess what? There's a track from Mono Trademark on it.
Apparently (from the credits) the track is the same one on the Beauty
Forward compilation, i.e. "Inflatable Rasta Wig (deflated)". This version
clocks in at 8:09, while the original is 12:03 (not too much, if any,
remixing as far as I can tell -- just shorter). I haven't listened to the
whole compilation yet, but there are also tracks by Workshop, The Bionaut,
Beige, General Magic & Pita, Pluramon, Nonplace Urban Field, Pole, Beige,
F.X. Randomiz, Kobat, Mao II and Mouse On Mars.
Like the _Process_ compilation on the same label, the liner notes contain
great insight into the artists contributing tracks. Here's the info. on
Uwe given inside:
"The Frankfurt based musician Atom Heart has been creating brilliant
electronic soundscapes for almost 10 years. An innumerable number of
musical concepts have been realized under dozens of different project
titles. His main interest, says Atom Heart, lays within the permanent
development of musical language itself and its mutation and abstraction
by using current technology. The first release that gained bigger
success was the minimal acid trendsetter I (Pod Communication). This
was followed by Ongaku, done with the DJ Ata and DJ M/S/O, which helped
trigger the Frankfurt "trance" movement in 1992. Continuously moving
on, he left this new field behind, heading for different things. He
ended up working on what we call "trip hop" today, a fusion of jazz,
house and techno, at the end of 1992 with the Latin jazz queen Lisa
Carbon. Their work had and still has many followers especially in
England and the United States. Various other releases followed on
labels such as Delirium, After 6 AM, Fax, Rising High, Pod, Ongaku
Musik, Rotor, Disturbance, JJ, Hypnotism, Rough Trade, etc.
One of his biggest successes abroad was the live EP Elektronikaa,
produced with his friend and colleague Pink Elln. This release proved
that "techno" also worked in a live situation, as it was not common at
that time for techno-producers to release live material.
Further collaborations with musicians like Haruomi Hosono, Pete Namlook,
Dandy Jack, and Tetsu Inoue created unique productions that covered a
wide spectrum ranging from ambient to house. In 1995, Atom Heart
released Second Nature, a project with the New York based producer Bill
Laswell and Tetsu Inoue on Fax Records.
After many years of programming for many different labels around the
world, Atom Heart founded his own label called Rather Interesting in
1995. Releases such as Flextone, Dots, Datacide, VSVN, Interactive
Music, Mu, Silver Sound, Bass, Brown, Mono TM, and Ondas allowed him the
freedom to realize his uncompromising visions. Rather Interesting has
made a name as a label that stands for innovation. Atom Heart does not
want to get stuck in one style, so he constantly redefines the language
of music; merging all kinds of sources including jazz, house, ambient,
acid, and hip hop. This allows him to create new styles by destroying
existing ones while constantly striving "... to escape from techno."
Since 1997, Atom Heart has been living and producing his music in
Santiago, Chile. On "Mr. Coconut," it occurs to one that mambo and
Latin music had an influence on the music released on Rather
Interesting. Besides releasing a few projects on Haruomi Hosono's Daisy
World label in Japan, Atom Heart will be touring as percussionist for a
Chilean electro-cumbia band project in 1998."
Along side these notes is a black and white picture of Uwe with palm leaves
behind him (in Santiago perhaps?).
What I'd give to be in the audience watching that "electro-cubia" project
in action...

artwork coming soon to the FAX web site - here is the text:
"Jet Chamber IV" (Pete Namlook & Atom Heart)
Atom Heart flew from Chile to Germany to record the follow-up album to the
successful Jet Chamber III. This time it is a haunting and deep fusion of
Drums & More, Jazz and intercontinental Ambient. While Heart is at his best
with polyrhythmic innovative drumming Namlook takes care of the bass and
solos on synth and guitar. With combined force they use and treat "Very
Clever Electronics" and set the standards a bit higher in Electronic Fusion
Music.
Once again, most of the sessions were performed live at the new studio of
Pete Namlook and are incredibly fresh sounding entities that combine the
power of these two most prolific musicians of our day. Take a seat in the
first class compartment and listen to some new equations in the mathematics
of Electronic Fusion Music.

Just a moot complaint... why is it that there's no more than five
tracks apiece on all the JET CHAMBER cds? Ok, I know the songs themselves
are usually about twenty minutes each, but somehow the overall releases
seem a bit lacking in that their total length (and amount of different
songs) is always a bit short of the discs' maximum capacities. Yeah, so to
be an album you don't *have* to fill up the entire piece of media (we're
all spoiled by cds), but...
Oh I don't know what I'm talking about - just bitching and complaining
I suppose. Nevermind. (Like I said before) I'm looking forward to this
release.

G'day,
Got my grubby hands on a few rare FAX CD's - these are new and sealed. I'm
looking for some trades at the moment, rather than selling. But feel free
to name a price anyhow - if no trades are adequate, then an auction may
result.
Okay, the list of stuff is:
PS08/36 Atom Heart - "Orange"
PS08/27 Atom Heart - "Couer Atomique"
PS08/40 Dr Atmo & Olivier Leib - "Music To Films"
PS08/43 Tetsu Inoue - "Ambiant Otaku"
PK08/88 Pete Namlook - "Namlook III"
PK08/88 Pete Namlook/Dr Atmo - "Escape" 2CD
Note: I have more than 1 copy of each.
My 'wants' list is at: http://www.fit.qut.edu.au/~elgey/wants_list.html -
mainly older FAX stuff & some box sets. But I'm open to all suggestions, so
please feel free to offer something else if interested.
Cheers,

Next Sunday I'll be spinning new tracks from Terry Lee Brown Jr. and
Vapourspace (just got in the new remix singles) as well as the usual
unusual assortment of drum'n bass and techno.
Thanks for listening!

When i read this i remembered something i meant to post a while

Aeon Flux. The episode is from one of the videos. It's the one

There must be a good reason why Rather Interesting releases start at 023.
Is this because Uwe had released 22 prior releases on other labels before
the formation of Rather Interesting?
I also don't understand why "Paranoid" was released as catalogue number
023-S (I know that the "S" means "Special"). It came out back in 1996, a
while after "Dots." Is this simply Uwe playing some sort of trick?

To know the answer you must read, read, read, our astute readers in SF may
know. You might also think about WSB, or 23skidoo, or Michael Jordan, or
bombings on Iraq, or dead U.S. soldiers in Somalia, or why is pod's first
cd release #23 and it just so happens that cd release is 'I' repetitive
digital noise with track 8 being 23rd autuum (spelling mistake as was
printed), think PTV, or TG, or how old was frau schmidt when he first
released something...although that may not be the answer.....actually I'd
think about the WSB connection, which if you listen to LB's Render and you
listen quite close you just may here sir WSB actually speaking 'random'
morphed into 'render'...or why else does schmidt-hole credit WSB on that
cd????? and one more factoid....did anyone read the credits to Render????
why the credit to Dave Barry???? maybe it's related to a song titled
'Congo' with a dedication to the Phoenix Bazooty Head Family!
Do any of you know who 'Linger Decoree' really is?????? I do!
Anyone actually hear 'Slot'?
When will Uwe do his cover album of Prince tracks?
Where was sel i/s/c?
What song did Uwe do for Talla 2xlc?????

I recently restored a CD-ROM project I had been working on just prior to
leaving Germany a couple of years ago....this project was a historical look
at the development of the Techno movement in Frankfurt and it's related
connections.
The CD was to feature Atom Heart, Lassigue Bendthaus, Station Rose, Rising
High, Redeye, Pod communication, Zoon, Fax, Delirium, Tetsu, Pyromania,
Terrence Mckenna, Superstition records, Groove magazine, and Optic Kiss aka
Intrinsic Dimension, MT Head, Dweeb, Magic Donut, J.Wise, Electric
Buttplug, Kommunagression, MoleProbe....ok me.....
So anyway, this rom has 2.5 hours of music, lot's of video, including
Bendthaus practicing for their first tour, 270 some odd pages including
graphics and pics of Uwe never seen before, and surprises......it was never
released.....but I'm thinking about finishing it.....
Would anyone out there be interested in such a disc?
If anyone would be so kind as to send some feedback.....it would be greatly
appreciated so that I might gauge if finishing this is something I should
tackle......

Yeah, I'll say something that's not too disparaging about it. It's got
electro, it's got house, it's got hip hop, it's got latino, it's got
familiar sounds and rhythms, it's most definately AH, it's even got some
lyrics (helpfully reprinted as titles). For some obscure reason, I'm
reminded of Mono Trademark, but less freak-beat. It's not too innovative,
but pretty solid. Reminded a bit of several earlier releases and there're
a few bummer tracks but that's about average for recent RI releases, isn't
it? None of the highs of BASS, Silver Sound, Interactive Music. At least
it's not drenched in the "Come Dancing" cheesy ballroom latino of too many
recent RI's (LCT, Coconut).
Finally got hold of "Senor Coconut" and it's nowhere near as good as many
have suggested. It's not all bad, there just are more so-so tracks than
good tracks. C'mon Uwe - you've been away a while - hit us big time!
No doubt piss off a few AH adherents with the above, but, hell, it's a
discussion page, n'est-ce pas?

23 is/was kind of a fetish number in the old Industrial scene (I mean
Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, ClockDVA, et al). I think it is
tribute to that. People begain to notice, whether or not there is any real
trend behind it, that the number 23 would crop up rather often in death
tolls and such. Of course it is equally true that you could find most any
number everywhere if you keep looking for it.

Uwe's influence from 23 came via William Burroughs.....as I said before
'Render' is a morph of a spoken word from WB which is actually 'Random'
from 'How random is random?'.........which is one of the clues in Uwe's
discography of who and what he is....
As for RAW's diatribe on 23...the Cosmic Trigger was published in 1982 or 6
years after TG's bringing back into the public conscience the magic of
23.....Burrough's having written the Naked Lunch in 1959 was the real
influence of Industrial culture and there was someone earlier than
Burrough's who noticed the coincidence of 23 but I can't remember exactly
who....
One more thing.....23 did not only influence the Industrial scene, it, both
23 and the Industrial scene have had a great impact on Techno music!
btw, the relevance of 23 is probably inordinately linked to these cultures
as William Burrough's who focused on 23 also gave us the theory behind the
cut-up technique which TG/PTV brought to our knowledge in the 70's early
80's, which Cabaret Voltaire first used on video, which both lead artists
to look at the cut-up ie., sample as being a building block of data...this
using of samples combined with the Futurists theories on Noise/Music has
born Industrial/Techno culture....and other stuff.

that would be Crowley, in like 1910 or so. . .
and Cosmic Trigger, which draws heavily on Crowley for material, was
published in 1977, not '82, making it roughly contemporary with early TG.

I was slightly familiar with the attraction by numeroligists of the number
23, but never thought that could be the reason behind the Rather
Interesting numbering system -- I thought it to be something more logical.
Then there's the Victor Sol -- "Paranoid" CD, which is the first (and
last?) Rather Interesting *Special Edition* release also being numbered 23,
but RI023S instead. This would further solidify that 23 is the starting

in any regular orders you might place. there is no minimum bid, but if the
offers are too low, they can be rejected. i dont think this will be any
problem though
some set sale items:
The Bitniks - Halograms (hypnotism) $12-
hre are the auction items:
fax label:
Jet Chamber (w/Atom Heart)
N+ - Plane (Atom Heart/Victor Sol)
Aerial Service Area (Victor Sol/Nino Heyduck)
Atom Heart - Morphogenetic Fields (Rough Trade/Germany)
