Most likely you should seek out the albums on Pod. Try "Act" by
Atomu' Shinzo, "Datacide" by Datacide (the first one), "684" by Urban
Primitivism, "Repetitive Digital Noise" and "Tinned Music" which are both
by _i_... also maybe "Softcore" by Softcore, and "Datacide 2" by Datacide
(which are both on Fax).

Most all of the remixes Uwe Schmidt's done for other people are also
pretty harsh - keep an eye out. Oh, and you've still gotta get "Render
Audible U.S. Remixes" by Lassigue Bendthaus. Hope this helps.

Damn. Wayway back on Sun, 23 Jun 1996, Sean Cooper wondered:

> what are those little numerical voice synthesizer bits at the end of
> _silver sound_, _bass_, and _machine paisley_ all about, and why have
> they disappeared from subsequent releases (well, just _hat_; haven't
> heard _mono tm_ yet)? at first i thought they were some sort of numerical
> index of macos releases, or maybe the number of albums uwe himself has
> put out...but then it's not on _hat_...maybe just solo albums?...what's
> the scoop?

Ok well, at the end of each of these discs Uwe's mac sings:

SILVER SOUND ....................... "one hundred and one"
BASS ....................... "one hundred and two"
REAL INTELLIGENCE ....................... "one hundred and three"
MACHINE PAISLEY ....................... "one hundred and four"
BROWN ....................... "one hundred and five"

Drop the "one hundred" part from each of these and you get "one",
"two", "three", "four", and "five". Add these leftovers together and you
get "fifteen":

MONO TM ....................... "one hundred and fifteen"
^^^^^^^
Oh, and the catalogue-number for MONO TM is RI 038 right? Add
"fifteen" to the catalogue-number of the very first RI release, and you get
"thirty-eight".

So far so good, right? Well, if this one (below) was RI 040 instead
of RI 039, I would be able to figure out another possible numerical
riddle... but I'm stumped. Ugh.

+N ....................... "one hundred and seventeen"
^^^^^^^^^
But if you count the number of RI releases there are as of "Built",
you will get... (gasp) "seventeen". And to add even more numerological
bewilderment, `she' vocodes the above *during* (and not after) the last
track - which just so happens to be #23.

Although (as if I haven't taken a wild enough stretch already), if you
look at the amount of releases which were skipped by this strange sequence,
there are "two" of them (DANDY JACK and HAT). Add this particular number
to the call-number for MONO TM and you get exactly what "seventeen" and
"twenty-three" come out to.

p.s. Oh and if you put MONO TM on `repeat'... at the end where she says
"one hundred and fifteen", it goes right into what the guy is saying
at the beginning of "Welcome To Planet Knowledge". Weird.

not real audio files. Bummer. Will it ever be released on RI? That would
sure be less stress for the plastic cards than ordering direct. The debate

does anyone know of a reliable supplier in the UK/Europe? does anyone know
of ANY supplier in the UK/Europe?

if you're downloading ram files, then they're not realaudio files. they're

dsp holiday will not be released on ri, although one of the following two
things might happen: 1) asphodel might reissue it, 2) virgin might set up
an elaborate manufacturing and distribution deal to handle daisyworld disc
releases outside of japan. both of these things are being kicked around by

Subject: (atom) Review: Semiacoustic Nature

Semiacoustic Nature (RI029)

1. Blazy Fills - All I can say is watch out for the big bass drum that
shatters fractal windows.

2. Love Letters In OCR - At first it sounds like a quirky house groove,
but then its looped percussion sequences also have a funked edge.
Also, there is a nice glaze of melody here which gives the track a
solidified foundation.

3. My Bird Can Sing - "Experimental" sounding tones trigger various
altered bird calls. If I had to pick, I would consider this the
album's "title track." A family of warbling and chirping samples
gradually comes forward, acoustically glossed over and glitched somehow
as the tonal front dissolves. You are left with the birds... only the
birds. Goes along with the cover art.

4. Chrome Yellow - An oscillating snappy snare pounds away and interacts
with a muted thump and scratchy hats. All the while an eerie metallic
drone blinks around in the background. An obscure female voice
speaks... French? Giggles remind me of those in Yello's "L'Hotel".
But these are not real, they're memorex. Sounds as if lengths of tape
are being manually pulled over dislodged playback heads. Definitely a
strange combination here. At 7 minutes, a breathtaking choir comes
forth and the female voice loops are melting down and almost instantly
the aura changes, vast and open.

5. Namloop - What can one say of Namloop? Well to start, this is still
one of the most gorgeous of the Atom Heart masterpieces. A mind shaker
in many ways, this obvious tribute to one of the most consistent and
powerful forces in the current ambient electronic kingdom, Faxlabel
guru Peter Kuhlmann, packs a bassdrum crunch and an emotional punch.
The captivating monophonic melody is introduced alone, then immediately
blending the drum sequence precursors. Atom Heart snaps together
balanced musical elements like a small motivated child and a tall pile
of Legos. A well thought out track that definitely makes a new contour
in the rapidly growing RI legacy. A must-hear.

6. Science, Operating Without Reality - At first some short-delayed
footsteps stomping across a dirty gravelly surface, and matching slam
noises. And then, what's this?? NASA radio exchanges. Play this
backwards and you have the Four Second Timing Discrepancy loop from the
Arecibo Trans Plutonian Transmissions. Ambient Darklord Deja weirdness
indeed, but I welcome the connection to a Lustmord project... or
perhaps both artists serendipitously employed this soundbyte from
NASA's Deep Space Network with centers in California, Spain, and
Australia. The loop is distinct and somehow appealing after several
visitations, though I can't really state why. And hell, if NASA hasn't
complained yet then go with it!

7. Evolution #9 - The 2nd reference to a Beatles track on this album that
I can see. A heavily layered loop of what sounds to be statements from
another female in a language I don't recognize. Her phrases are
cascading down in the intro and then when the actual music starts it's
a surprising blitz! Tactile bass punches and high pitched twinkles
galore. This is the "intelligent" sound in full force, truly. Say
it's gonna be, alright...

8. Compusurf - A mix of things here. As is often the case with his tricky
tracks, the mood we start off in is quite different from the mood that
develops as the song runs its course. These mutually exclusive moods
are sandwiched between the remaining instrumentation and rhythmic
elements of the song. We are swinging through hyperlinks like Tarzan
and Jane.

9. Sim Sedona - The resident beatless track for the album. Monochromatic
textures and backwards stretched hihats coalesce with other sounds that
remind me of portions near the latter half of Automatic Composition #1
from Datacide II.

10. Stac! - Included on the Real Intelligence compilation disc (RI033),
although the 2 recordings differ in the relative brightness of certain
sounds.

Overall, another serious yet cheerfully colorful effort from Mister
Schmidt. A mixed bag stylistically, and new heights are reached in some
of the songs. Also, this happens to be the first RI release with the
filled silver design on the disc itself. The album was more experimental
then I expected from a name like Semiacoustic Nature, but then again
that's what Nature is right? A big experiment....

This is old news, I know, but since I didn't see any commentary on JC2, I
thought I ought to 'correct' the impression that it isn't any good. For my
taste, it's one of the best FAX things ever (probably 'cos Uwe is
involved), and I like it more than JC3, which is more jazzy. JC2 is pretty
much pure electro, ambient in places, all-out in others -- brilliant stuff.
I have JC1 but haven't listened to it yet (too many discs, too little
time...). A good friend of mine has JC4 and says it sucks -- he was really
put off by it and said he wouldn't get another Jet Chamber disc unless he
heard it first. That says something....

Subject: (atom) AH interview...

I recently read the AH interview at www.urbansounds.com and i now think
that if there's one interview with him to read, this one's IT. Our very
own Sean Cooper (fellow listmember) covered just about every aspect
without making it seem overly cramped with data! Whereas careful
listeners can gleen much of the philosophy and technique behind the music,
some things just can't be known by simply listening, and it was a big
relief for me to hear some ideas right from the source.

One of the more interesting points for me was Uwe addressing his focus on
the >essence< of a song, genre, or style. To take the idea behind music
and enhance or "mutate" it to me sounds like an efficient exercise in
accelerating the evolution of music. It's almost as if he's an electronic
scout, looking ahead into these new musical regions and mapping the
territories as the next natural "musical" progressions.

Also, he talked considerably about the making of the upcoming "Flanger"
which is a collaboration with Mr Friedmann (of Nonplace Urban Field). I
thought i couldn't wait to hear this... now i REALLY can't wait!!! If
only the seemingly lazey Ninjaz would answer their email once in a while
and let us know how to get the damn thing.

Another thought. The new Lissigue album. Whoa. I'm dying to hear the
Robert Palmer remake! And Prince?!? 3 years in the making this must
simply be the bomb for electronic music's acceptance into mainstream
culture... at least it might be some time down the road.

Anyone else have any thoughts...?

the date i have from ntone is february. i think i might've mentioned
before that ntone were to be sending me a DAT with a few of the tracks on
it, one of which i would post to the audioPlay module with the interview.
if that happens (i'm not optimistic at this point), i'll definitely let
everyone know.

it sounds like a wonderful album. _schnittestelle_ is my favorite thing
atom heart's done in the last year or so, and _flanger_ sounds like it was
approached similarly (he talks about how doing _flanger_ provided the
ultimate principle for putting _schnittstelle_ together...)

hi all, just a question that's been bothering me for a little bit. on the
third track of matter, there's about 3 1/2 minutes of some pleasant male
voice + synths + basic rhythmic ambience. quite nice. however, i have the
sneaking suspision that i've heard this music in a mainstram place, either
in a movie, tv show, commercial - somewhere (maybe even the olympics???).
is this true, or is it just the chord progression that sounds familiar?
thanks.

quick review: an improvement over _naturalist_, which i thought was mostly
(tho not entirely) throwaway material lacking the depth of _schnittstelle_.
there are fewer vocals than i was expecting; about half of the tracks have
some vocal element, usually just a single line spoken and then chopped up
in some way. from a "neo-pop" perspective it's disappointing; there isn't
much "new" here from the standpoint of either atom heart's previous work or
that of "pop music" (of which i think better ah versions already exist;
_schnittstelle_'s "sonnenstudio," for instance, or hat's amazing "shinjyuku
photoshop"). a couple of standout tracks but nothing to push this into my
list of alltimers. this is all based on a single listen, tho...ymmv.

MacIntalk.

I'm getting tired of those AH songs which repeat their title as the
song chorus ("Rider Sweet", "Pentatonic Surprise", etc.). Unfortunately,
_Dropshadow Disease_ begins with a song called... "Dropshadow Disease",
which follows the same formula. Ugh. I put this cd in for the first time
and just couldn't get past that track.

Upon more recent listenings I begin the cd on track #2. Much better!
This is a great album. Lots of `vocals', which is a delightful surprise.
Lisa, Uwe, (the return of) Albert... and some newer `folks', like Ralph,
Bubbles, Junior, and a duet from Carlos y Catalina. `MCH' is back too with
scratching on "Dingbats".

My favorites right now are "KPT V. 1.0" and "KPT V 1.1". Lots of
digital cut-up (aka drill 'n bass ala Uwe Schmidt) on the latter. I
thought I'd hate "Push The Little Daisies" just because of the song
title... not so. If Uwe kept up on his Lassigue Bendthaus project a bit
more, this is what I'd imagine his stuff'd sound like now. Nice duet
between Uwe and Lisa. And vocoder.

Now, the picture sleeve on the other hand... a pisstake. A joke?
It's *awful*. And the `Free full color Clipart Poster inside!' made me
laugh so fucking hard! Hahahaha! Yeah, I dig Uwe's sense of humor.

I recognize the sound byte at the end of the disc of course. This
little `blip' emanates from the typesetting department at work at least a
hundred times a day. Now, Someone want to give more insight on the song
titles?

The only place I was ever able to find this CD was at CDEurope

took them over 6 weeks to find it, but they did eventually come through.
They still have it (both CDS and 12") listed in their online catalog,
though that doesn't necessarily mean they'll be able to get it. It's worth
a shot, though. (Incidentally, they also list the Whitehouse 12" and CDS.)

just received the 2 recent Rather Interesting releases and I don't know if
it's because I haven't heard any new Uwe in several months (and that's

"Fototienda" especially with the tribal rhythms took me back to Senor
Coconut and surpassed it! When I heard there were going to be vocals I
wasn't looking forward to it but I think they did a great job. "Push the
Daisies" is so groovy - you can just hear Lisa Carbon in that track, Pete
Namlook's sample in the first track, etc. The sense of humor is hillarious
- especially all the references to his Macintosh G3, Photoshop, KPT,
dingbat fonts, etc. I love it - probably my favorite RI release of his
this year.

b2 "Atom Heart Live" (RI030)

As the only live disc in the series, listeners are assured an exciting
sonic adventure with b2. The two b's stand for Berlin and Barcelona, the
locations of 2 different live performances by Atom Heart from back in 1994.
Technical information on the two improvised sets is actually typeset on the
CD itself, most of the disc is covered in text documenting the details.
The performances themselves were from the Interference and Sonar Festivals
in those cities. Our minstrel was travelling with a TB303, an MC202, and 4
cassettes which contained 8 total loops (one sound in each channel).
TR808's were supplied at each location for him to use. Apparently, the
tracks themselves were not pre-sequenced. With the 4 tapes running
continuously, the different loops were faded up or down creating a heavily
layered and predominantly monochrome atmosphere. The general tone is made
up of wide-sweeping oscillations, spectral drones, and acidy dropplets of
melody weaving in and out of each other. "While these loops were
constantly playing," the text on the disc reads, "I was programming the
sequencer and the rhythmbox." Talk about crowd interaction! The venue,
audience, and mood were all factors in the developing collage. Each of the
two tracks start out with a soft, glowing monochrome session which shifts
and changes in subtle ways for the first few minutes. To this aural
primordial soup is added the familiar 303 worm which gives some tonal
resolution to each track, and other ping-ponging monophonic synth sequences
appear in the murky background. This is basically the second phase, and
what was at first abstract and minimal gradually becomes quite layered up
by about a third of the way into the piece. The bassdrum is gently
introduced, and some time is spent with it's simple guiding rhythm. The
303 continues belching along while various parameters which alter it, the
drums, and the loops are modified in turn. At 23 minutes into the first
track, there is a slight hesitation, some beatless measures to emphasize
the thickened morphing backgrounds. But there is only a few moments pause
before launching headlong into the 3rd stage, dominated more by more or
less continuously mixed percussion patterns. Eventually, a hihat and the
recognizable electronic cowbell sound are thrown in. Finally, a powerful
resolution back into the floating monochrome layers, and far off are the
sounds of tribalist shouts of celebration, an appropriate coda for a
flawless and spontaneous live performance. The continuity of b2 is
amazing. Sounds are introduced logically, one following the next until the
archetypical trance groove is built up. If you happen to like any 4otF
trance or Goa styles this will certainly please you. The two tracks on the
disc are two variations on a similar theme, but one track is nearly 35
minutes long while the other is around 20 and the overall mix and feel of
things differs considerably. The performances are presented in reverse
order, with the later Berlin date appearing first. Also, the Berlin
variation is more solid 4otF material, while Barcelona seems a notch less
rigorous, but perhaps more spaced out. This is something not to be missed
in the RI series. b2 is really the only exclusively acid trance material
to be found on ri so far, and it explores that territory rather well. I
have to say that this is one of the finest demostrations of this style that
these ears have ever heard and it is definitely another top notch release
for the label.
