Rather Interesting RI 049 CD

I'll be brief as the subject line suggests:

Atom Heart has put together a (conceptual?) CD based on computing and
everything digital. With songtitles like Ping Pong (True Type,) KPT v.
1.0, Cut 'N' Paste, and Dingbats, the music is heavily sampled, sharply
digital at times, quite lighthearted, laden with intentional distortion/
lo-fi, and lite drill-n-bass-ish. Lighthearted like MOM, and lo-fi drill n
bassish like Andrew Lagowski meets Yello and Mike Paradinas. Fotienda is a
sort of digital samba that starts out nice but drags on a bit later. KPT
v. 1.0 is a lush ambient number with an a touch of the Orb sound. KPT v
1.1 is the most straight ahead d- n-b of the CD with a great distorto lo-fi
digital sound. Cut N Paste is just that (d'oh!) The CD ends with the
"bonus track" consisting of a computer voice singing the words "Daisy,
Daisy, Give Me Your Answer Do...I'm half-crazy..." [As a kid way back when
(hey Jeff K!) I had a 45 RPM 7" made using one of the first computers that
filled up a room and had the advanced capabilities of digital speech and
singing this same song.]

Pete Namlook, A. Lagowski, and Lisa Carbon (Atom Heart?) are all credited
with minor contributions.

Sounds pretty cool, but I've noticed the tendency in music produced by
people on their computers that it just sounds flat. No real bass response,
no real high tones. It's kind of a bland band in the middle. Does this
fall victim?

Could this be a reference to the scene from 2001 in which HAL is having his
memory removed and starts singing this song? Does the singing drop in
pitch or slow down as in the movie? a great scene, btw, esp since Hal goes
thru what sounds like his "boot up" Welcome message...

I think "Humbucker" is that pink vinyl 12" released last year. Even though
it reads "Atom Heart" on the label, we here decided it probably wasn't Herr
Schmidt, since it was sub-par housey/techno and sounded nothing like any
Atom Heart material as I remember. So in short, no worries. :) Btw,
weird you mentioned two items connected by the color pink...

Isn't the Pink Elln thing on one of the Secret Life of Trance series -
volume 1 or 2, I believe. That's only the Montreux one, though.

Staring me in the face at the Southampton branch of HMV today was a bright
pink 12" single, allegedly by ATOM HEART. It seems to be called Humbucker,
and the other information on the label is: A45 135 BPM (AQUARIUS' PINKY
MIX) FOR DJ USE ONLY PINK 001

The music is pretty straightforward, four-on-the-floor, hihats, monotone
bassline. Floyd references continue with samples of the wide synth chords
from Shine On, and the four note guitar line.

It could be by anybody, which leads me to think it's not by our Atom Heart,
if you get my drift.

Anybody got any clues, or can check it out with the man himself?

Cheers,

Tim >>>

Phobia is one of the many aliases of Pink Elln, and this record is remixed
by Atom Heart and M/S/O. "Whitehouse" is of course the record that samples
the hell out of DHS.

If anyone would like me to pick them up a copy of either one of these,
please get in touch. The shop has them at $8.99 US apiece.

Not one of his better mixes, but still good all the same. Sounds like it

is this the same form and function that put out a really excellent jungle
12" called "the aircutter ep"? it's some pretty mental drum and bass, and
i'm thinking that they just might be the same. . .

. . .i've never seen the label since i got this twelve (about 1 1/2 years

yes, definitely it! you have a rarity, my friend - it's a haujobb side-
project called dots & dashes. the dots & dashes stuff is some incredible
spacy, robotic, futurisitc drum'n'bass. not much like it out there...

Silver Sound >60< (RI031)

In a way, ri enters a new phase with the release of Silver Sound >60<.
Listening to this, one immediately recognizes some new influences and
stylistic experiments. The feel of jazz (whatever that means these days)
and the cocktail lounge are more readily heard in the increasingly complex
sequences found in many of the songs. And where complexity isn't really an
issue, a more natural and casual freestyle-slanted approach can be heard.
Silver Sound is a fun disc. Movie samples, muted and funkified shouts, and
general unpredictable mayhem is all sprinkled throughout the length of the
album for your Listening Enjoyment. Don't take anything too seriously, the
music seems to suggest.

One significant point that deserves mention is that this album includes a
couple tracks that you might consider drum+bass. For instance, we can find
breakbeat techniques like the invisible yet tactile bass vibrations and
spastic percussion, but that is only part of the story. Neither of these
tracks sample in D'n'B patterns from other sources, meaning you won't hear
the all too familiar "amen break" derivatives that seem to be just about
everywhere these days ("the kidz love it..."). Nay, everything here is
unique and specially programmed by Uwe himself. Let's dig in, track by
track, and see what else we can find....

1: Congo - Definitely starts the party off with a bang. Or should I say a
clap? Introducing the Superclap (for want of a better term). You've
never heard anything like it. It's bristley, crisp and clean and will
most likely make you blink if you're jamming it on your headphones. It
has shown itself on other releases, sure, but I believe this is where
it first appears. Rolling snares, ride cymbals, open and closed hats,
some bass, and an organic horn sample all showing off their stuff.
Along with these more junglized elements are some ivory-ticklings
courtesy of the elusive and exotic Lisa Carbon as well as a host of
other manipulated drum bytes and gadgetry. The piano chords every now
and then keep the melody on track. The timing stalls and drum fills
are perfect. A synthe horn solo coalesces with the "real thing." Atom
Heart here explores the individual behaviors of instruments performing
together as a band.

2: Jazz - Why is it called jazz? Well, that's a trick question. This
quirked little number is based around a repeating plucked string sound
and every now and then a *really* weird voice says the word "jazz." A
simpler tune, relatively speaking, and that's the beauty of it.

3: False Memories - Atom Heart here demonstrates quite the ample Drummin'
Bass skillz sufficient for a spaced-out yet groovy blend. Full of
lateral panning of both melodies and their consequent effect layers and
alters the local soundfield layout. Contains a downright superb and
uplifting melody throughout and can be played again and again. An
appropriate applause acts as an outro.

4: 50 Way Amphenol - Just for background, Amphenol is a company
predominantly involved with making various connectors and cables for
electronic equipment. A lumbering bass and some cymbals come together
in an odd configuration. Things are more harsh or mildly distorted.
Just after you realize something fishy about the track, a funny thing
happens: the track fizzles out prematurely at around 3 minutes and you
are left with only the repeating 808-cowbell riff that morphs into the
emerging beatlessness. The background surfaces hang out for a few.

5: My Mac Can Sing - A folding and warped bass sequence gets the track
going right away. And his mac really does sing. Enchanting electronic
vocal chords resonate while subtly changing filters mimic lip and mouth
positions. Its fluid movements induce a kind of dazey mind set.

6: Digital Fields Forever - Know one thing of frequency,
I mean it must be high or loooow.
This toon you know isn't breaks but it's
allllllright.
That is I know it ain't 4/4.
Headphone lay you down 'cuz you're going to
Digital Fields....

7: Past Life - More starry synthe solos combined with some ever-changing
percussion arrangements. Different. Electro-crickets finish the piece
out.

8: Neuro Traffic - A bulging distorted drum set fluctuates various
computer waves and bloops. File this one along with Cyberjam or Chrome
Yellow for the sterile, disruptive contour it adds to the album.

9: Zillefunk - A rainbow melody fills the acid house vibe. Just who is
this Zille anyway? And is he or she a good cook?? No matter, there's
a 303 in the works here. Super phunky and the 303 will rip you a new
ear before it's through.

10: The Combo Played My Favourite Tunes... - Mayhem I tell ya...

11: Silver Sound - Some warm up sounds, a voice speaks "Silver Sound" and
the song begins. This song is a slower one, but remains quite active.
Optimistic feel overall, and it's full of all kinds of weird noises and
heavy beats. For months and months I thought that voice was saying
"Shields are down." Go ahead and laugh. Still, I love it!

harold,

concerning this 12inch outtake of *pop artificielle*. yes, it is an
official release. *form & function* indeed is a *roughtrade germany*
sublabel. they released the 12inch in license of *kk*. it is a limited
edition of 350 copies and actually not an *official* release, but rather a
promotional tool, promoting the album coming in january. the 350 copies
will be given away to press, radio, tv and so called *opinion leaders*
(whoever they label thinks this may be). if you want to, forward this to
the mother list.

I've been listening to that Pod sampler that Sonic/Instinct released in the
US, "The Techno Evolution Continues." (And little more than two years ago
I actually passed on buying the genuine Pod release of this in a used store
for $4 because 'I already have those songs' -- major regret). Anyway, it
has me wondering who some of those collaborators were and what other
releases those folks put out. For instance, who is m/s/o (Heiko?), who is
ata? I apologize if this has been gone over too many times already.

And for those of us who are Orange-less, is the version of "One Atomsecond"
on this CD the same as on Orange on Fax?

review: BASS (RI032)

Being the last album of the first series of ri discs, BASS is a real
finale. The title stands for Binary Amplified Super Stereo, which is
precisely what your home system becomes after you've got the disc spinning.
This album is a well-polished piece of work. In terms of style, Silver
Sound and BASS are like twins, as both of them contain bits of jazz,
lounge, and even drum+bass. Even the covers are slightly similar,
centering primarily on a circular, simple toned design. Here the BASF
logo, apparently supplied by Niko Heyduck, is altered yielding a kind of
pseudo-visual deja-vu. No wonder the folks at customs get confused! Maybe
this is some covert strategy for introducing ambient confusion? The
essence and techniques of the mentioned styles are broken down with what
might be called an Occam's tape splicer. The earmarks of each genre are
decomposed into their simplest forms and then assimilated into the digital
domain for reassembly. Here these symbolic sounds are transferred and
integrated into the current ri scheme. Watch out for this, it's perhaps
the best one so far!

1: Burncycle - Not the opener you would expect. A rounded bassdrum pounds
out a rigorous percolating rhythm. A warm, full sound it has. This is
another one of those pieces that slowly mutates throughout the course
of the track until you reach something completely different from what
you started with. Not long after the start, certain tones join in.
There isn't a cohesive melody here, and later some more dronelike waves
enter the picture while the drum subsides.

2: James First - A 20-second retroglitch. Sounds like it's a big-band
recording, passed through an EQ on which only the rightmost sliders are
pushed up. Gives that effect of transistor radio interference. This
continues right into the next track.

3: Tico Tico - It's the first thing you hear. Belongs in the eerie
driftgroove category. A softly scraping loop circulates while tones
bleep off-key, blended with a background setting. The bassdrum in this
one lies in the really low frequencies, and the snare is scattered in
such a way as to suggest falling rocks, or "loose chippings" as the
like to Irish refer to them as. Look out below!

4: Outer Freak - A song like this reveals Atom Heart's minimalist lounge
sequencing prowess. At first there is a low frequency oscillation
slowly going up and down. Without warning, this changes into
flickering hats, clinks, a hopping snare, and yes, more piano. All
spread neatly across the binary field, mind you. Sinewave scales glide
across the left channel while the reverberations are located opposite.
Twiddle your Balance knob and you will find 2 different sequences that
match beats. Every now and then, an electronic crashing sound slides
in and out of view. What a freak of semiacoustic nature.

5: Radio Transparent - After several years' time this still remains one of
my favorite tracks from the label. Almost Coil-ish qualities in this
one, and Coil have even greeted Atom Heart in the insert for the Black
Light District album. Binary amplified untuned short waves and what
sounds like the rustling of autumn leaves blends with many other
abstract sounds until they start to organize into a sort of Gestalt
rhythm. This song almost sounds automatic, like it composed itself,
though it also appears to have consulted Uwe before materializing. The
beat fades in from the right side while the left channel emits divine
melodies and more glitched-out noises. There's not much in the center
of this one. Can't think of much else to say other then it's sure to
satisfy the "ambient-with-beats-please" crowd.

6: Bahia Atomic - Is this man messing with our minds? The superclap is
back, louder then ever. Sit back and relax. Clap! Incoming from the
right side, get ready for it! Slow-paced orbiting hyperlounged vibes,
chimes, and backwards-sounding vocals virtually surround the listener.
Great solo work on the left side. It's almost as if there are 2
different songs here without sounding crowded or containing conflicting
melodies. Much like the title, which is made up of two seemingly
unrelated words: "Bahai," a Spanish word for bay, and "atomic." An
allusion to the universal Bahai faith or their wonderful temples?

7: Subterranian Shore - Music as anaesthetic. Distant lost fragments of
songs from decades past seep down into deep layers of strata. Evolves
into a whirlpool of triple-channel polychrome textures. Definitely
pleasant and peaceful, yet containing all kinds of noise in flux. This
is the last rest area on the album, use it wisely.

8: Ain't It Funky - You tell me.

9: 9G Make Your Face Flat - While containing perhaps the best solo of the
lot (again in the left channel), this track consists mainly of
similarly tuned elements all keeping the same clock. Percussion
pulsates while the solo detunes, inducing ambient lightheadedness. You
can never tell when the song's end is coming:
beep...beep...beep...beep...beep...beep....

10: K-Jam - Another personal favorite of mine. When I first heard this
simply amazing track its channels were mixed differently. It's on the
Real Intelligence compilation (RI033) right before the bonus tracks,
and the mix configuration is more "traditional" on the compilation.
Impeccable use of the superclap. I still have never heard another
breakbeat song that rivals the multitextured approach heard here.
Simple and convoluted at the same time. Is it calibrated to the brain
hemispheres? Flawless loops are set in motion, reset, and triggered
again in new combinations. A must hear if you like unique breakbeats!

. . . . . . ..... . . . . . .

This is the last review in the first series, that is the first 10 bar-coded
ri CDs. I'm going to take a short break here before proceding to series 2,
there are a few other related releases that need attention. Among those
are some Sieg Uber Die Sonne projects and other Dandy Jack discs. After
that we'll get into the ri discs one can actually still purchase ;)

Subject: (atom) Sieg Uber Die Sonne reviews

reviews: Sieg Uber Die Sonne "1-infinite" album
plus "1-infinite remixes" EP

While their 1st album may leave some listeners somewhat less then
impressed, the follow-up album "1-infinite" is a sophisticated and
rigorously-tested musical work. SUDS has dipped their style in a tub full
of boiling hot electrofunk. Further, they've warmed up their sound with a
more cerebral and intuitive mentality. Full of detail and melodic nuance,
this album stands up to meticulous headphonautical scrutiny as well as
supplying those groovy rhythms necessary for the dance floor. Add to the
recipe a pinch of samples from such diverse sources as Bauhaus,
Funkadellic, Throbbing Gristle, Atom Heart, VicSol and Heyduck (of +N,
Aerial Service Area, and Xjacks), and about a dozen or so other people and
you're raising your eyebrows over such ambition. Well, the result is
stunning. Fusion is key.

1: La Oz) At times the suave technique reveals an almost Yello-ish
finesse. Mind-boggling synthe mixtures come from every direction.
What's Tricky saying? A lone note rings out in solo. This is a funky
dark trance jam.

2: Mode) More deep funk lies herein. The daring wave maneuvers are
tactfully passed through a range of brightness filters. This also
makes perfect driving music, even reminds me of a more readily
accessible Whole Traffic song, though this is considerably more layered
up. I believe it's GPO's (of Psychic TV) voice we hear, "These times
they are passing" and other words of wisdom add another dimension to
the music. Extremely hypnotic and upbeat.

An 11-minute remix by SUDS themselves exists on the "1-infinite
remixes" EP. I am inclined to say that this original version at least
rivals it in overall quality, though it's about 4 minutes shorter.

3: Magnetic) Starts out with a dull metallic pattern, but quickly fills
out with a lovely late afternoon melody. Voice segments issue words
from some Roswell-related film. "Tell me what to do...Communicate...No
No NO!... gooood..." Of course, the first 4 minutes are a good song
alone, but really they merely set us up for a marvelous second half.
IDM rarely gets this good, and on top of that there's all this funk
lying around....

4: Mogul) This is the track that is remixed 4 different ways by various
people on the "1-infinite remixes" EP. At first this original version
is deceptively simple sounding, almost like an Atari 2600 theme. But
after the intro is finished, Mogul becomes a straight pulsating trance
forum. Noise-burst percussion reminiscent of palettes from the likes
of Ae or Namlook's "Atom", but make no mistake, this falls in and out
of Atari and deep trance modes. Co-production from Victor Sol and Niko
Heyduck on this one adds a nice edge.

The remix by Sensorama (on 1-infinite remixes) is full of strange
timing nuances before an oscillating synthe patch appears, drawing a
shimmering melody. Back to the unpredictable rhythms and spaces for
some time, and then the melody reappears, this time with a solo and
other accompanyment. The solo is nice, casual, and nonrepetitive.

The 2 remixes by Sun Electric (the +5V remix and -5V remix) are
interesting as well and don't sound very similar to the original track.
They seem to have more of a synthpop flair. The +5V has some great
aliasing type squelches near the middle and is almost breakbeaty.

Ricardo Villalobos takes a 13.5-minute stab at a more housey/techno
variation. Some recognizable Roland X0X drum sounds are thrown in for
good measure. Could be slightly shorter then it is, but then again
this is an EP and no one's pressed for time. Doesn't remotely sound
like the original, though at the song's conclusion you can hear a
distorted sequence from the original's intro.

5: Neue Tanz) Yellow Magic Orchestra lyrics sing the title every now and
then. The music consists of heavily tweaked analogue synthe noises.

6: Pre Human Body) This is the track that opens with a Bauhaus byte: "Oh
I wish you could be my baby all the time..." Remember the Sky's Gone
Out? This is a 4otF stomper with lyrics from a Funkadellic tune,
haven't figured out which one yet. Definitely a fusion to be heard.

Atom Heart remixed this track for the 1-infinite remixes EP. For this
remix, the lyrics are the same, but the drum programming is a Whole New
Ballgame. Look out, Atom Heart cuts the rhythms up, rearranges them,
and rejoins them together into a breakbeaty piece with all kinds of
quirky bleeps and doodles. Drastically different patterns when
compared to the original. Never heard anything like it!

7: Are You Radioactive?) Immediately induces a sort of quasi-melancholic
nostalgia after hearing it a few times. You can whistle along to this
too, or it might pop up in your head from time to time. Female voice:
"It's 11 O'Clock."

8: A whole bunch of people helped out on this one. I hear soundbytes from
Senor Coconut, of all things. A full-on medly of things in this song,
made of several stages.

9: Secure) Oooo... this one is the funkiest one of them all. A solid
melody comes together here with a pseudo-guitar like solo segment. A
real kicker for those of you with big speakers, you'll crank it for
sure. Secure any objects on the walls, you'll be bringing the house
down if you use this track on the dance floor.

10: One/Zerotonic) A surprise track!

If I could describe it (and I can't), I would describe it as "Atom heart

the cd quite a bit. the songs are fast and hard, and almost every one is
quite good. it isn't like anything else I've heard by him.

REAL INTELLIGENCE III COMPILATION 1997/8

Rather Interesting presents their third compilation entitled _Real
Intelligence III_. This cd contains a selection of titles taken from the
1997/98 R.I. releases and represents the development of musical language of
one of the world's electronic music innovators. Starting with Dandy Jack's
"Tubercool" (by the way, the only title on this cd in which Atom Heart was
not involved) via the latino versus e-z listening projects Lisa Carbon and
Senor Coconut, to the pop meets jazz mutations from _Fonosandwich_ and _The
Roger Tubesound Ensemble_. The second half of this compilation leads us
through the editing infernos of _Schnittstelle_ and _Naturalist_ to finally
encounter RI's version of neo-pop for the next millenium _Dropshadow
Disease_. The album closes with the two exclusive bonus titles, "Harddisk
Rock (Don't Stop)" (a sort of electro update meets Festplatte) and "Real
Intelligence". Although titles from 8 different releases are featured on
_Real Intelligence III_, one will be surprised about the coherent and
smooth flow of the album, leading from one image to the next, stepping
forward and leaving all known categories behind... but remember: only
stupid people call it intelligent!

yeah, it does have some photek tendencies, but i think it's better (maybe
i'm biased). :)

well, for the d'n'b-flavoured haujobb:

NEWT _-273C_ (1997; 21st Circuitry/Quantum Loop; USA)
spacy, minimal, drum'n'bass/ambient/techno. it's easier to compare it to
movies than music. think _blade runner_ meets _alien_ with a bit of _2001_
mixed in. a great headphone album; very atmospheric.
NEWT "Phaseshifting" EP (1998; 21st Circuitry/Quantum Loop; USA)
more actively drum'n'bass than _-273C_, but the same comparisons are still
in effect. very robotic and futuristic.

[daniel myer of haujobb and andreas meyer (no relation) of forma tadre are
NEWT]

Dots & Dashes "Aircutter" (1996; Form & Function; DE)
the first D&D ep. kinda photek-y at times, but the next ep saw a step
forward to their own sound.
Dots & Dashes "Selected Drum Works" (1997; Form & Function; DE)
hard-hitting, mechanical drum'n'bass. tough basslines, twisted beats, and
crisp production. what would happen if kraftwerk's robots were reborn in
1996 as bad-ass cyborgs with audio destruction their goal.
Dots & Dashes S/T (1998; Form & Function; DE)
kinda tough to find, but compiles both D&D ep's and a few stray tracks.

[D&D is daniel myer and dejan samardzic]

Myer "Style" EP (1997; Groove Attack; DE/UK)
eenh...okay. only two tracks, very source direct-esque at times...

[daniel myer solo - i know i missed another ep that came before
"style"...]

and when you feel like checking out the non-d'n'b stuff:

haujobb _solutions for a small planet_ (1996; Off Beat (dist. Metropolis
USA); DE)
a desert island album. industrial/experimental techno with d'n'b elements
(hey, vocals). incredibly good, though.
haujobb _matrix_ (1997; Off Beat (dist. Metropolis USA); DE)
more desert island here. :) flat-out experimental techno/industrial/
drum'n'bass. remixes of a few tracks from SFASP, and 4 new tracks. plus a
sample cd (useless on said desert isalnd, but what the hey?). i actually
prfer most of the remixes to the originals.

[haujobb is daniel myer and dejan samardzic - they actually have a few
albums/ep's out, going back to '94, and a new single just came out]

cleen "designed memories" EP (1998; Off Beat (dist. Metropolis USA); DE)
lighter, more ebm/industrial dance outings. still good, though. the
clinchers here: "believe", one of the more moving songs i've heard aimed
at dancefloors; "freezeout" has simpsons samples :) ; "smoking enemy?", a
11-minute d'n'b workout. whoa.

[cleen is daniel myer and thorsten meier (once again, no relation)]

forma tadre _navigator_ (1996; Off Beat (dist. Metropolis USA); DE)
okay, so most of the tracks with vocals are cheesy. but the instrumentals
are these great stringed, choral, watery numbers that are very good. lots
of lovecraft imagery.
forma tadre _automate_ (1998; Off Beat (US release on Metropolis in a few
weeks); DE)
ten steps above and beyond _navigator_. nothing but ambience and
occasional female vox. very watery and deep-sounding.

enjoy!

in addition, they did something under the name 'architect' on ant-zen,
which i haven't heard yet, but i believe is in the minimal electronic
field....

stupid atom heart question:
ok, i have scattered a.h. releases, and just got the lisa carbon 'post
techno swing...' which was pretty funny. now, is the majority of the
'latin' releases in this vien, or...? Usually latin music scares me, thats
why i ask.

thanks,
-mike
