HAT is super sequenced glitchery from Hosono (of YMO), Atom Heart, and
Tetsu Inoue. Now the funny thing is, you'd at first think something
described as super-glitched might end up "experimental" or edgey. Well,
somehow the trio (a masterly bunch they are) has turned things around and
made something totally lush and worldly out of ultra-chopped up noises.
The disc comes with little postcards from different parts of the world.
And the songs themselves, damn, lemme just say this disc is going with me
to Hawaii this spring. The first track "Arizona Analyzer" features some
killer twang-age Spaghetti Western manipulations. Tetsu admitted in a
recent interview to being a predominantly deconstructive or just plain
destructive influence when collaborating with Atom Heart on releases like
Datacide or MU. But with AH also focusing more on sample cut-up
techniques these days, well you can imagine the crazed levels this one
reaches. And it does all this while remaining totally musical.
Give them Diasydiscs a whirl!

Both Heiko and DJ Ata make up M/S/O. Heiko and Uwe Schmidt
collaborated together to make up Ongaku. Ata does stuff as Rebel Youth and
runs Delerium Records. I'm not sure what other M/S/O releases there are
out there, but I do have the _Trax_ 12" on Pod which features the Atom
Heart Mix of "Move Right Now", as well as the version that's on the Pod
sampler.
> And for those of us who are Orange-less, is the version of "One

Yup, it is. I'm thinking _Orange_ was to have originally been on Pod
Records before the label went under (hence the song's appearance on the
sampler), but was then released on Fax, as were nearly all of AH's albums
before the creation of Rather Interesting.

Would this "Heiko" be the same Heiko Laux that's doing Surgeon-esque
minimal techno these days? (A full-length H. Laux release made a recent
appearance in one of the s://kimo music 'new releases' listings; I have

Actually, it's Superficial Depth. _Digital Superimposing_ was
released in March of 1997 on the (now) U.S.-based Side Effects label.
Personally I like it. The first half of the disc consists mainly of a deep
(un)throbbing hum... like being inside the belly of the air-recycling
system for a massive spaceship.
First listened to it while being driven along the Blue Ridge Parkway
(in North Carolina) at the break of dawn. The serenity fit it quite
nicely, turning the glowing mountain range into a jagged alien landscape.
Yeah, I dug it.
Anyway, here are two more reviews taken from the mother-archives:

superficial depth - digital superimposing (side effects)
the long-awaited atom heart full-length on brian "lustmord" williams' side
effects label is over an hour of mostly monochrome ambient (similar, for
those that know, to _b2_, parts of _dots_, or laswell and inoue's _cymatic
scan_) broken up every 15 minutes or so by thin, minimal idm-esque rhythms,
shards of digital (i.e. purposefully lacking the "thickness" and "warmness"
of analogue) synthwork, etc. the looping bass figures at the beginning and
muted, minor-key melodics toward the end present a nice, encompassing
contrast to the movement of a piece (single-index, kids) best listened to
from start to finish. again, unexpected, but quite pleasing.

SUPERFICIAL DEPTH - DIGITAL SUPERIMPOSING (CD by Side Effects)
Superficial Depth is a new name chosen by Uwe Schmidt, who we of course
know as the busyst bee buzzing around with Lassigue Benthaus, Atom Heart,
Lisa Carbon Trio and many more. His discography grew skyhigh in only a few
years. Recentely he moved to Chile, but I doubt that he is cut off from
doing exciting music. In a way this new side project is just too perfect:
the music, one long track of just under 70 minutes, seems like suited very
well for a release on a label such as Side Effects. If ever Side Effects
needed a perfect example of what the label stands for, Superficial Depth is
it. Waving tones of synths and samples (no melody heard however) of superb
dark ambience, rumbling of percussive sounds in the background, anything
that is not static but constantely shifting in tone and colour makes this a
perfect listening when you turn of all your lights at night. Dark ambient
indeed.

does anybody else recognize the closing moments of bola's "amnion" (last
track, side c) as a looped section from the middle of namlook and atom
heart's first _jet chamber_ cd on fax? it could just be similar sounds
made by similar machines, but you know that distinct, indescribable brain-
jar that happens to you when something incredibly familiar is living deep
within the folds of another track...?

Hey ya'll,
There's a big ol' full-pager review of the new Sample CD by Atom Heart et
al in the new issue of Keyboard magazine, and there's 4 excerpts from it
on their website if you feel like checking it out (www.keyboardmag.com).
They didn't even make any mention of Atom Heart/Uwe in the review, but
gave it a heavy-duty thumbs up.

Happy New Year! It's that time of year again to prepare for the 4th
International FAX Day which happens in early 99! Remember, IFD always
falls on the first Thursday of each new year which is 1/7/99 this time.
In celebration of this upcoming event, the FAX and Rather Interesting Image
Galleria is open at:
http://www.usatt.org/rseguine/FAX
The Galleria contains an image library from each FAX and Rather Interesting
disk which gives a chronological look at all the cover art. There are also
links to join the FAXLIST and Atom Heart discussion lists, and of course
links to the major FAX sites around the world.
Enjoy!

note: The German cd for "Morphogenetic Fields" comes with a circular white
[print] on black sleeve sticker affixed.
note: On the German cd for "Morphogenetic Fields", there are no discernable
separating breaks in between tracks #2, #3, and #4 (combined time:
24:07), and/or tracks #6, #7, and #8 (combined time: 17:42), and/or
tracks #9 and #10 (combined time: 14:32). The above listed times

not the song/idea's time.
Hope that helps. ;)
