So I jump in the shower just as the last track on "Shellglove" begins.
There are speakers near the bathroom door. In a few moments I become quite
concerned over the sound the water pipes seem to be making. I've never
heard them do this before, I desperately attempt to adjust the water
pressure to make it go away before something drastic and devastating
happens. Suddenly I realize it was only the music...

I've heard most of the RI titles, but almost nothing by Lassigue. In part
this is because I never see anything under that name in the stores when I'm
out and about (of course, where a used CD store would choose to file LB
stuff is another variable). Are the major full-length releases all out of
print, and if so, what is the relative availability? I would think the
title(s) that Restless licensed for U.S. distribution would be out there in
sufficient numbers to keep a second-hand supply going for a few years at
least. Anyone know the status of this?

Well like you said, they were around for a few years at least. I
stopped seeing cut-out copies of _Render_ in shops probably around sometime
early last year. After all, it did come out in 1994... Restless went under
just a little later than that. Checking sale lists on rec.music.industrial
would be your best bet probably.

Tik.

After spending months trying to locate myself a copy of the _Machine_
12" by Mental Blox, I have finally found a source. This record, for those
of you who don't know, features one of the more recent remixes from Atom
Heart. Mental Blox is electro, and Uwe really adds a *lot* to his remix of
the title track. Very nice.

Anyway, you can get this record directly from Matt Haines (who is
Mental Blox) of the U.S.-based Spinyl Records record label. There are only
a few copies left apparently, so here's the scoop:

covered experimental electronic music and defined a certain 'berlin

Grooving away here to HAT (Atom Heart/ Haruomi Hosono / Tetsu Inoue), I'm
wondering if any of these artists has recorded anything similar. Do I
remember something about a Hat2?

I tend to think of this as mainly Atom Heart, but I've been less impressed
with his other projects that I have (admittedly few) - VSVN, Senor Coconut,
Second Nature. Can anyone recommend anything as funky and beepy as HAT?

Hello - I am getting ready to make a huge order of various Daisyworld/FAX/
Rather Interesting releases. I'm finally going to fully immerse myself in
the digitally radiant world of Uwe Schmidt (after merely basking in the
binary sun for awhile). I've been a huge fan of Lassigue Bendthaus for
quite some time and a sideline fan of Atom Heart's side projects (and a
fairly longtime lurker here) - anyway, I've got a few really good online
stores (Playing by Ear, Ear/Rational, Forced Exposure, FAX USA, Malignant,
IsoTank, etc.) but I'm having a problem tracking down some of the earlier
RI releases (Dots, VSVN, Flextone) - anyone have any ideas where I should
look? I'm also looking for good IDM type releases, so if you know of a
good record store that carries that type of stuff, I'd appreciate the
links. Lastly, I think I finally found a Daisyworld distributor (thanks
Sean C.!) that, while they don't have them in stock, can get them within
two weeks. Anyone know a U.S. carrier that has releases such as "DSP
Holiday" - by HAT - in stock (and cheap)? Any information would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks!

Hm... sounds like you'd probably dig the more recent Rather

more robot chirping blipping clicking weirdness than HAT, but also the same
amount of cheese. I don't like the new HAT that much though. Happy happy

Wow, so you didn't like the Senor Coconut?

Um well, as funky and beepy... have you tried any Lisa Carbon? Harry
Hosono's stuff on Daisy World? Keep an eye out for the _Pop Artificielle_
album by Lassigue Bendthaus on Kk in March. The _Jealous Guy_ single from
it comes out on February 8th. Oh, and _:)_ is this month's RI release...

hi.

I'm kind of dreading hearing _Pop Artificielle_. The whole `pop'
thing has just been turning me off lately. Is it just me? I didn't like
the vocal tracks on the past several releases. I dug the machines singing,
but not the phrase repetition thing Uwe's been doing.

Could someone give their impression of "Jealous Guy", "Superbad",
"Angie", or any of the other new LB songs that are floating around right
now? I'd like to hear a take on the full-length from someone who's got one
of the Form & Function (promo-only?) pressings that's been out for almost
two months now.

I saw _Render_ and _Render: Audible U.S. Remixes_ to be the high point
of Lassigue Bendthaus. So smooth. Essential. I never got into _Cloned_,
and only cared for about half the songs on _Matter_. I gotta tell ya
though... I'm really digging _The Engineers Love_. Music from eleven years
ago is so tinny it's great! Maybe it's just the tape hiss.

I'm wondering what the new one's going to do for me? Over-produced
superslick vocals over ultratight programmings? All edited down to three
minutes thirty-three seconds for optimal radio playtime? Pop songs for
goodness sake... ug. Will it make me throw up and feel embarrassed, or
will I be so impressed that I end up ranting and raving about it for the
duration of the year? Will I hear the singles in clubs? Oh wait, I hate
clubs...

I've been meaning to check out Harry Hosono's (YMO) stuff - any
recommendations on particular albums? I want ultra-futuristic neo-pop
stuff like the HAT project. How does Yellow Magic Orchestra (him and
Ryuichi Sakamoto) compare? Speaking of Sakamoto - I have the recent Ninja
Tune singles that were remixed ("Anger/Grief", etc.), what should I look
out for by him? I'm not as interested in his pure score soundtracks as I
am in futuristic pop stuff - with heavy techno-ambience.

And when is this _:)_ scheduled to be out? What is going to sound like?
And, what is the album title?

> When's Flanger again? This is the one I'm looking forward to. Uwe

This Flanger project sounds awesome. Speaking of Bernard Friedman, I have
a Nonplace Urban Field cd coming to my house as we speak - but what does
his Drome project sound like?

A single on Ntone (ninja tune sublabel) is out in February: what is called
and when shall we see a full length by Flanger?

I'm just finally catching up on all the recent Rather Interesting stuff.
I've dug L.B. for a few years but not until recently did I have the
motivation and the cash to track down most of it so I'm not a full fledged
Uwe expert yet, but what I have heard is just beyond amazing. I cannot
wait to hear "Pop Artificielle". As much as I'm into glitch-experimental
stuff now (Mego, Skam, Plug Research, etc.) I still love the neo-pop,
electro-futurism of projects like Lassigue Bendthaus, HAT and many of Uwe's
projects. His programming skills quite literally blow me away.

I have my copy of the new single coming next week. Isolation Tank and
Digital Underground are tentatively getting their copies next monday - I
pre-ordered mine. So, when I get it I'll let the list know what I thought.

Yeah, I agree with your comments on "Render" - it's probably either my
favorite cd of all time or very close to being such. And I have nearly
1000 cds so this is no easy feat. I also thought "Cloned" was fucking
amazing; what was so amazing about it was that I didn't listen to it until
'98 or so, 6 years after it had come out and it STILL sounded better than
99% of the electro-industrial that was coming out now! And I suddenly
realized where haujobb had gotten a lot of their aesthetic from.
Regardless, "Render" is a better overall album - conceptually, lyrically
and sonically - but "Cloned" is nearly as great. Especially given the
Baudrillard/dna/replication theme going on within.

I doubt clubs will give it much play - he hasn't seen a huge reaction yet,
I doubt he'll get any soon. We can only hope he'll get some support.
Largely though Fax/Rather Interesting releases seem to be a cult following
type thing. Which I support because if all the damned industrial fans knew
about - or cared for - Atom Heart's projects we'd have so much more
competition finding all these albums! :P

Why are you so against pop? You, my friend, need to go out and listen to
old David Bowie ("Scary Monsters", "Low", "Heroes", etc.) and see the
beauty of mutated pop music. I see Atom Heart as being a modern David
Bowie in some respects - which is fitting since he's covering one of my all
time favorite Bowie tunes "Ashes to Ashes" on the new album! I personally
love the neo-pop theme that Uwe appropriated on his recent releases.

I think he's challenging the pre-conceived framework that is placed on
artists who make techno-experimental-idm-ambient music. It's expected of,
as an "experimental" musician, that he make atonal or music that isn't
readily listenable but I think the greatest experimental music is that
which is both bizarre in nature and dually radio friendly. That's why I'm
so bored with the pure noise acts such as Merzbow/Masonna and so forth -
they've proven that they're not going to progress. They're only followed
because of some sort of sonic sado-masochism the listener has. Pure Noise
is too obvious - not enough subtlety. The "I listen to stuff that would
make you cry" mentality among *most* of their fans is so seclusionary and
reactionary. I think that the Merzbow recording method could be duplicated
by anyone: Overdrive your amp, apply some flange, distortion, reverb and
record - instant Merzbow album!

Ever wonder why he has so many releases? Because it's easy to make.
Regardless, I think that artists that actually rely on programming and
*gasp* melody are infinitely more applaudable (real word?) due to the fact
that they actually have to spend a great deal of time weaving melodies,
programming synthesizers and concocting vocal tracks. But going back to a
tangent - it is in my mind far more subtle and subversive to release a
radio song that has deep intellectual questions and is pop, but with a
decidedly experimental vibe. This is far more dangerous and challenging,
in my viewpoint, than the typical noise band releasing their 300 only vinyl
album to the converted listeners.

Disclaimer: I do like quite a few experimental bands so don't rip on me
for being negative - it's just the Merzbow school of "music" is extremely
trite and boring to me.

So, in short, I can't wait for "Pop Artificielle" - in all it's sugar
coated glory!

Mr. Tangent (yeah, I ramble, so what?) :P

Hmm, I dunno about this... they may progress over very slow periods of time
or they may even regress from time to time but as an example of very
obvious progression, pick up Merzbow's new Aqua Necromancer album. If you
can find me another Merzbow album that sounds like that, then maybe I'll
agree with you.

Now, on the other hand, I do understand your point and I basically agree
with you concerning some noise artists, but I don't know if the above
examples are valid.

> They're only followed because of some sort of sonic sado-masochism the

Er, okay! I dunno about that one either... Admittedly I'm not the biggest
Merzbow fan and I don't own a ton of his albums be he does come up with
some really great stuff from time to time... And I like certain noises and
noise when it's put together in some kind of interesting way so I don't see
it as sado-masochism if the sounds please me and entertain me! it's not all
bad and it's not all good...

> Pure Noise is too obvious - not enough subtlety.

Hrm, so you don't think Merzbow's Music for Bondage Performance is subtle?
It may be all noise but it's pretty subtle... And what's wrong with being
obvious? Sometimes it's fun to be obvious! Why hide behind subtlety all of
the time?

> The "I listen to stuff that would make you cry" mentality among *most* of

well that's just plain silliness on their part, but don't judge music based
on the fans...

> I think that the Merzbow recording method could be duplicated by anyone:
> Overdrive your amp, apply some flange, distortion, reverb and record -
> instant Merzbow album!

Umm, see above examples of Merzbow albums... this stereotype of Merzbow is
just that... a stereotype... he has many different kinds of albums and
styles... some good, some bad, some boring or whatever but I think it's
wrong to totally disregard everything he has done... heck, i'm a big fan of
atom heart but I don't even come close to liking everything by atom
heart...

> Ever wonder why he has so many releases? Because it's easy to make.

Uh oh... Now you could just as well apply that to any artist that you don't
care for that releases a lot of product... like, er, a person could say
that about Atom Heart! or Muslimgauze! or Pete Namlook!

> Regardless, I think that artists that actually rely on programming and
> *gasp* melody are infinitely more applaudable (real word?) due to the

Why is the amount of time you had to spend on something make it any more
"applaudable" or whatever? If an artist can make something that appeals to
people and make it in a very short period of time them shouldn't that be
even more applaudable?

The question isn't melody or no melody or time spent or no time spent or
obvious or not obvious or subtle or not subtle... the question is whether
or not someone somewhere likes the way something sounds...

> But going back to a tangent - it is in my mind far more subtle and
> subversive to release a radio song that has deep intellectual questions
> and is pop, but with a decidedly experimental vibe.

but is subtle inherently good? why be subtle when you can just come out and
say what you want to say? i don't see how different approaches can't be
good for different times. there is a time to be subtle and there is a time
to be crazy and obnoxious :)

Deep intellectual questions and a radio pop song, hrm... i have a feeling
your deep intellectual questions are going to be missed by a lot of people
when they play it on the radio so it's not going to be very subverise
anyway... especially after the radio pop song just becomes another thing
that you can buy down at the mall... and what is a deep intellectual
question anyway? :)

> This is far more dangerous and challenging,

Dangerous, pshaw... challenging, pshaw... dangerous and challenging are
extremely relative words for different situations and times..

> in my viewpoint, than the typical noise band releasing their 300 only
> vinyl album to the converted listeners.

But why are you assuming that a noise band inherently wants to be
dangerous? Maybe they just want to have some fun and make funny sounds that
entertain and tickle people's ears...

> Disclaimer: I do like quite a few experimental bands so don't rip on me
> for being negative - it's just the Merzbow school of "music" is extremely

Like I said, I understand where you're coming from, it's just that I think
you should be more careful in your stereotypes and generalizations. I find
that a lot of people who totally rip on Merzbow really aren't that familiar
with a lot of his work so they have this stereotype of thise one kind of
thing he does that really isn't that accurate... He has done a LOT of
different kinds of sounds in noise and experimented with a LOT of ways of
creating sounds and really has a wide variety of different kinds of noise
he has done...

> Mr. Tangent (yeah, I ramble, so what?) :P

Furthermore, once you listen and understand where the variations are, where
the developments are happening, it would cease to sound like formless
noise. It also helps to playback through a system that adds as little
-additional- distortion as possible.

Check out _1930_ (on Tzadik which released Tetsu Inoue's _Psycho-Acoustic_)
or _Music For Bondage Performance 2_ for excellent and very different
examples of his work in the last few years.

A lot of the RI/FAX releases have a deceptive complexity. Many were
executed live, others compiled from segments recorded live -- ranging to
the slow-paced, deliberate programming on the more recent RI (even if it
doesn't always work).

I am not very good at commanding my machines in real time, nor have I tried
to put together a rig with that in mind. A few times I have set things up
where I'd collect sounds and beats so I could trigger, mix, mute, apply
effects, etc. to put together a track in real-time. If that is what you
aim to do, you can create a whole lot of material in a short amount of
time. And when you practice this more, you can put together more and
better material with less effort. Atom Heart puts a high value on
efficient production methods. I get more enjoyment, more reward, and
better results tweaking stuff over a period of days or even weeks, and
throwing away stuff that doesn't work for whatever reason, or that I just
don't want to commit to tape. One approach isn't better or worse, except
for what is appropriate for an artist and best to express his or her
individual voice.

In some ways I see the early RI & POD material as almost a flip side to the
same coin as Merzbow or Aube: executed quickly, relatively unfiltered by
the artist's self-censoring mechanisms. So it is left for you to judge,
and I can say with some assurance he does not care what anyone thinks.
When the artist doesn't filter, and when he finishes any idea he starts,
you're going to end up with some crap. The stuff I like is good enough,
and different enough from everything else out there, that it is worth
sifting through the rest.

In response to VSVN AROB (couldn't resist) and Mark,

I detract my statements about Merzbow - I was simply using Merzbow,
wrongly, as a scapegoat for all that I think is wrong with most noise
music. I do appreciate some noise - sculpted noise. And I was jumping the
gun and stereotyping - as Rob pointed out. I need to listen to more of
Merzbow's material but sadly what I've heard thus far hasn't done anything
for me. And I agree with many of Mark and Rob's points that subtlety isn't
always necessary nor is it preferred. Anyway, I was listening to some of
the Release Your Mind 2 material today and was getting agitated by some of
the noise stuff on it (but the ambient disk owns me). Sure there are some
great noise artists but for the most part a great deal of it to me seems a
way for a person to make "music" - easily - and claim they're a musician.
When in reality very little thought or direct artistic expression was given
to what they created. As Rob pointed out - you have to wade through all
the junk to find the gems. Regardless, I do like some noise acts but I
prefer the dark ambient and IDM side of things - with the occasional
industrial act (which I'm getting increasingly bored of, as Rob did so long
ago). Anyway, my apologies for gunning Merzbow and like-minded acts down.
I was only using them as an antithesis to the pop format which Chris was
complaining about. Again, there is good and bad about every genre - I'm
just a little more critical where noise is concerned. :)

much interested)

Just saw this line and had to interject, "but look at Uwe -- he's the most
prolific artist I know about, and most of his releases are pretty
amazing...."

Actually, it's 70 billion. ;-) What movie is this from, do you know?

Ever since I got _Plasticity_ and heard that track ("Soulenoid", on the
1993 Cabaret Voltaire album, for those of you scratching your heads), I've
been wanting to see that movie. Sounds cool....

p.s. - btw, I was really bowled over by that first track on DSP Holiday,
"Arizona Analyzer." The kitschy guitar bits are funny in an almost
Orbular kinda way (a friend of mine commented that this track
should've been done by the Orb instead of A. Heart...). Great disc,
IMO -- and very impressive on the cut-up editing side (and fun,
unlike Inoue's _Pschoacoustic_).

Wasn't it also sampled on a very early CV album too? 2x45 or Mix-Up?
There may be more details of the sample on the earlier recording.

Obligatory Uwe content: I'm not the sort to gush over babies and kids, but
that image sent to the list of the toddler with the Burger King HAT and
Intel shirt was awfully cute.
