Subject: (atom) Senor Coconut/Lisa Carbon Trio question
I was recently made aware (by VSVN ARAB) that there is a non-Rather
Interesting version of "Senor Coconut" that has bonus tracks. It was - if
he recalled correctly - released on a label called East-West? Questions:
1) What is the track listing on this non-Rather Interesting version?
2) Where can I order it from (anyone have a web site for East-West or
whatever the label is)?
I know Lisa Carbon Trio - "Trio De Janeiro" was released on Daisyworld
Records and had a few bonus tracks. Can anyone post a full track listing
of it here?
Lastly, is anyone willing to sell their copy of either of these non-Rather
Interesting versions? Or, does anyone know where I can find either of
these online/mail order? I'd pay upwards of $30 for the LCT (Daisyworld
version) and around the same for S.C. Let me know.
Mr. Tangent
I'd also like to have any "bonus tracks" from the above non-Rather
Interesting releases on a cd-r, and would compensate whomever copied me
them, anyone?

Obviously most of you know that the aforementioned label has apparently
went under. I've tried searching for a few items online (namely,
Daisyworld Tour compilation) and haven't found anything. What little I've
found I've had to get used. If anyone has a good source for Daisyworld
disks I'd really appreciate it (much thanks to Endemic/Jeff, VSVN ARAB and
Gary H. for their help with online ordering places from awhile back, btw).

I finally got this disk; I will post a review tomorrow (much too tired to
do so now). My initial opinion is highly favorable. It's got some very
impressive synth programming and heavy usage of studdering/vocodered/
processed (but not cliche sounding) vocals. Too bad I didn't get it three
weeks ago when I PRE-ORDERED it! Damn postal system!!!!!

I went to their web page a few weeks back and I SWEAR it wouldn't load and
an email sent to them was returned. Yet, I just went here:
http://www.daisyworld.co.jp/index.html
And the page loaded and there is *apparently* new information - but I
really can't tell as most of it is in Japanese. Can anyone read Japanese
on here? Anyone know how I can contact them about ordering stuff? I'm
confused. What's up with them?
And, in response to Jason Tar - they don't have "Senor Coconut" listed on
their site, what's up with that? Sure it is on Daisyworld?
Mr. Tangent
Maybe Daisyworld changed servers... was the old one (now defunct) at this

Very good news! What's the title of it - "Templates", right? Do you know
a track listing yet? Are all the tracks from the "Flanger e.p." (vinyl

I emailed Ninja Tune a few weeks ago about this and still no reply so any

The disc is on Akashic Records (there's more then one label with

Subject: (atom) Tetsu Inoue vocals and work
Okay, so I'm enamored with the "DSP Holiday" release by HAT (thanks SO much
Jason J. Tar!!!). I've seen numerous releases by Tetsu Inoue and have a
few of his works with Uwe (Datacide, etc.). What I'm looking for is
something that Tetsu has done that's similar to "DSP Holiday". Has he done
anything like that album, solo? I'm aware that most of his stuff is in the
ambient vein, but I'd love to hear more stuff like "DSP Holiday".
Speaking of, is anything by Haroumi Hosono's work like this?? One of my
favorite things (besides the amazing programming) on "DSP Holiday" is the
gorgeous vocals on "Shinjyuku Photoshop" by Tetsu Inoue. His japanese
backing vocals on "Molecular Modelling" <Render> were awesome too. Does he
sing on any of his solo projects? Help a poor soul out! :D
How is the other releases on Daisyworld Records? Anything outstanding - or
in the same vein - as "DSP Holiday"??
Thanks to Sean Cooper for answering some of these questions previously -
but I'm wanting more info (especially about Haroumi Hosono and Tetsu
Inoue's works). Thanks in advance.

John,
I have most of the Hosono catalogue...it's quite varied, but his solo
work is my fave of the ex-YMO-ers. As far as DW stuff, I'd HIGHLY recommend
"Quiet Logic" by Mixmaster Morris and Jonah Sharp. I've heard that Pacific
231's "Megashiro" (dunno if that's correct) and the DW Tour are all good.
Hosono's work is difficult to categorize...definitely a pioneer of funky/
sterile electronic coolness in the early-mid 80's (Philharmony, SFX, FOE
projects)...then he moves into movie soundtrack and soundtrack-ish stuff,
then one of the all-time great ambient records (Mercuric Dance). Late 80s-
90s finds him still in the ambient vein with Mental Sports and the remixes
of it. Country Gazette is sort of a strange (I think the guy from Sukia is
on it, so no surprise!) kinda country music nee Japan ambient (I thought
the banjo effects were a hoot). NDE is a nice, smooth ambient (with some
beats...more similar to Mental Sports imo) ride with Laswell on board. I
don't think Swing Slow saw any US release...I got mine in Tokyo.
Tetsu's work is similarly difficult as it varies, but prolly not as
much. His last two (Waterloo Terminal and the previous) are quite noisy
and abrasive, while most of his earlier work is typically what may be
considered some of the finer examples of deep electronic (as opposed to
organic) ambient - like Organic Cloud (my fave) and the much sought Ambiant
Otaku. IMO, I tend to seek out those Fax collab disc which he's a part of
because they're usually really good.
The wild card you tossed in there was comparing Hosono and Inoue to
Uwe.... difficult. I'd say the common ground is bleeps and that there is
more is common between Inoue and Schmidt - but Hosono has a style and sense
of humor (of course, this is a subjective inference by me) which I find
closer to Schmidt than Inoue. Also, we need to ask WHICH side of Uwe are we
talking about? There are a few sonic facets there, too.

First of all you totally need the first HAT disc on Rather Interesting.
Not much other Tetsu like that (but if the Masters of Psychedelic Ambiance
disc (w/Atom Heart on RI) can be gotten, then do so immediately, also
Tetsu's _World Receiver_ on Instinct - a bit driftier than DSP and w/o
vocals, but totally Tetsoid and not as deep-space as the FAX stuff). You
might like Hosono's _World Standard_ disc, which has even more of a
country [!] feel than DSP Holiday. [This has been reissued domestically,
by the way.] The "Daisyworld tour" sampler is a must-have as well - some
wild stuff on there. Also on Daisyworld and excellent but less like DSP
Holiday is the Mixmaster Morris/Jonah Sharp disc "Quiet Logic."
Also on RI: Brown, Naturalist (in parts), and the second Dandy Jack disc
(Plastic Woman) seem like your best bets. Also don't overlook Fonosandwich
for some more weird vocals. I'm also looking forward to reviews of
Lassigue Bendthaus's _Pop Artificielle_, which I saw in the store yesterday
but passed on (available cheaper elsewhere, surely), as more AH pop vocal
weirdness is promised.
Happy hunting,
D.
Hosono is [has been; long career] very prolific, w/many Japan-only discs
- someone review them for us! (Please?)

I don't understand how something of such relative high-profile interest,
such as this release as well as DSP Holiday, can only be available (and
only with some difficulty and expense) from a Japanese label. Surely there
are other labels in Europe or the U.S. who would want to license a project
like this??? Or did Daisyworld want an "exclusive"?
I've been patiently waiting news that these would be available with greater
ease and less expense, but so far nothing (that's right, not even Nothing,
heh).
Anybody know the skinny?

Daisyworld is Hosono's label. Apparently they or their distribution deal

from what i understand daisyworld has been doing the back and forth thing
with asphodel (which is itself apparently about to shut its doors) and an
undisclosed major label. from what i understand, hosono is very slow in his
business dealings, so the problem may not lie in interest, but rather in
follow-through. at any rate, daisyworld is self-supporting in japan
(there's a much larger market for experimental music there), so it doesn't
have the immediate impetus to seek out/act on licensing in other countries

"Superbad" opens up the latest L.B. album in pure funk style - as befitting
a James Brown cover song. Lovely electronics mingle in and out while a
horn sample plays over and over. The vocals are done in a very unique
fashion that sound unlike anything you've ever heard before. They're
recorded and resynthesized with a digital software program, in real time, I
assume. The vocal synthesis is similar to what a vocoder does: by using
one input source as the sound and another source as the modulator of the
original sound. The end result is a "staggering effect" which makes the
vocals sound like they've been cut and pasted thousands of times. The
liner notes mention a software that he developed called "Raw^&Mac217;" - so I
assume he used this on the vocals. ("Raw^&Mac217;" does vocal simulation based on
vocal resynthesis generated by original vocal raw material. This is a
'composition versus combination' product) - from the liner notes. This
version seemed more complex and overall better than the "Digital Soul
Substitute" version on the "Jealous Guy" cd single.
Track two is a gorgeous neo-pop version of ABC's new wave hit "Be Near Me".
As with all the covers on this innovative album, the only thing remaining
from the original is the melody. Lots of glitch work on this song - where
Uwe takes a certain sound and multiplies or extends it digitally to fuse it
as a prolonged glitch, that eventually morphs back into the melody.
Absolutely amazing.
"Sunshine Superman", a Donovan cover, slinks into my headphone space next.
This track reminds me a great deal of Uwe's work on the project HAT. Uwe's
obviously not afraid to let the melody and complexity alone keep the song
afloat. You'll not find any clichÈ samples of dismemberment or noise
elements at all, so if that's your thing then you'll want to look
elsewhere. Some of the most beautiful moments in music - vocalwise and
synthesis - are to be found here. Elements of the recording methods used
on Datacide's album - "Ondas" are found here, especially the usage of split
stereo fields where each speaker is playing different things in an odd
"virtual stereo" by two dissimilar, but unified, mono fields.
I've not heard the original Prince rendition of "The Future", but I'm sure
it sounded nothing like this version. The song opens with a sample of
William S. Burroughs saying, "When you trot into the present, the future
leaks out". It is my least favorite song on this album, but still is a
very worthwhile piece. It's just a little too slow overall; I was
expecting it to diverge into something faster but it never did.
The next track is a cover of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy". It is exactly
the same as the first version on the "Jealous Guy" cd single. It's a
beautifully somber rendition that actually made me cry upon listening to
it. It's that type of song that makes you recall past loves and things
that you should have done but didn't. The music opens with a compressed
piano melody then slowly morphs into sublime echoed vocoder vocals. The
track has piano in the background throughout the entire song in some form
or another with subdued, slow electronics pulsating rhythmically along
side. This song could very easily fit in with anything from the "Render"
album.
"You Are In My System", by Robert Palmer, is the next cover to receive Uwe-
fication. The stuttered vocals are most evident on this song - and are
used to great effect. Most of the material on this song, and ultimately
the entire album, utilize the "Raw^&Mac217;" vocal processing effect along with
polymorphic analog programming - and this song is no exception.
I've waited for the next pairing a long time - David Bowie and Lassigue
Bendthaus. And finally I hear the results of Uwe Schmidt covering David
Bowie's classic "Ashes to Ashes". I'm not let down in the slightest,
thankfully. It opens as the original does, with the warbled piano melody -
but infuses the classic piano sound with some blissful digital cut ups and
techno sounds. A perfect cover version in every aspect. I sincerely hope
this is the next single from the album.
L.B.'s cover of Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Thatness and Thereness" comes in next.
This version sounds virtually identical to the one on the "Jealous Guy" cd
single with the addition of vocals. The vocals on this song are without
any recognizable processing, and stands out by that virtue alone since all
the other songs have heavy processing. I will say though that the vocal-
less version sounded much better, and it seemed that the instrumentation of
the song was strong enough on it's own
I normally hate the Rolling Stones but Lassigue Bendthaus' cover of "Angie"
is one of the most fantastic songs - cover version or otherwise - that I've
ever heard. The programming on this song is unbelievably good - with
emphasis on subtlety.
Sounds of rain falling slowly, building to a climax and ultimately a
torrential downpour open the next song. The granular synthesis simulacra of
rainfall culminate into an otherworldly ambience and flow directly into a
reverbed drone. A processed voice beckons, "Silence is golden, but my eyes
still see." And as quickly as this Tremeloes cover entered, it fades into
silence, thus ending this epic album.
The programming and digital editing on this album are superb, you can tell
Uwe Schmidt is a master programmer who knows how to utilize the full
capabilities of his machines. This is what I wish more musicians would do
- drop the distortion and often times silly "darkness" and not be afraid to
make some lovely melodic, complex and innovative music. It seems that
distortion is too often used as a crutch to hide the fact that they're poor
musicians. This is however not the case on this album. My only complaint
is that it could have been much longer. In the end, we may have to start a
new genre just to find some sort of summation to this album's highly
progressive sound: Neo-futuristic glitch oriented electro-idm-pop?
Whatever the jury decides, this is an album worth exploring - if only to
find out what the trends will be in five to ten years.

All I can say is that the Japanese sites (including "Comfort", a very
reliable one - gaijin friendly:^D) I've contacted seem never to be able to
get his stuff themselves. They never go into detail, just usually say "due
to unavoidable circumstances, etc". DO post if you know of an English-

I've got mine on pre-order, so it should be here soon, but I found this
review in the recent Playing By Ear update:
--
RATHER INTERESTING (GERMANY):
$12.99 DOS TRACKS :) (RI 051) CD
As the name suggest "DOS TRACKS :)" is dealing in quite a different way
with the concept of tracks. While previous Rather Interesting releases were
dealing with musical crossover structures between tracks and songs, "DOS
TRACKS :)" is sort of coming back to this theme for a last time before
leaving the 90's. This album though features quite different sound
aesthetics and the tracks presented here are for sure unheard in there
digital pureness. Influenced by internet, ASCII art, machine interfaces and
various other "end of 90's technology" artefacts and philosophies. This
product stands out in its unique structure and sound. Interpreted from a
different angle, known musical models find there updates on "DOS TRACKS
:)", from the monochrome "ASCIIED" to clustered titles such as "1E.WAV",
"DOS TRACKS :)" shows us the cool face of Atom Heart. You won't hear a
single melody, no vocals, no emotions, no cheesyness, and no humour on this
album. Just pure binary neo-minimalism.

Augh, sounds dreadfully boring. ;) Sorry, but I live for cheese (or
Trash, as the case may sometimes be!).
BTW--MiddlePillar has _Pop Artificielle_ for a measly $15, but their
shipping charges kill any cheapness that this price may give. :( Any
word on a domestic issuance? [www.middlepillar.com in case any of you

Win95/98 DOS (without the GUI) that works with the ubiquitous .WAV audio

Stamped one side - Atom heart - with a small design, like two coils and a
nostril ring - don't know how else to describe
One track per each side:
side a - etched WE 007 A1 - very trancey, dance floor oriented - some
female sampled vocals - "and I should....." or something like that
side b - blank label - etched WE 007AA1 - sounds like a remix of side A -
house-style - a bit on the latin side
Thats it. Its upbeat stuff - I only have Senor Coconut and Lisa Carbon
stuff and its not like that at all.

The "normal" import price. I didn't know there was such a thing, although

I'd look elsewhere... generally, anything you can find at Isolation Tank,

Yes there were some other entities on POD besides
the various Uwe-guises: Names that were something like
Lab-4, Bliss, Red Skies, Siderial, others.
There were around 35 - 40 releases on POD before they
finally melted down back in 1997.

I really doubt that Asphodel would bother with remastering
"Flowerhead." But, they did change the cover artwork.
The audio that radio stations broadcast typically has its
dynamic range compressed to make it more "listenable" over
possible noise that might be received with the transmission,
thus making Datacide -- "Flowerhead" sound louder.

Sorry, but it's actually called "MicroPOSSESSED"...
Maybe Uwe should have titled it "MicroPROCESSED" instead!

Hey everyone (seems like a small list), I heard AH last with Flanger.
MixMasterMorris was spinning it at "Return to the Source" in London a few
weekends ago, and it BLEW MY MIND! What other AH stuff is even remotely
like this? If you've not heard any Flanger, listen to snippets at
ninjatune.com under n-tone sub-label(?).
Anyhow, it had to be the best aural experience I'd had in a very long time.
Challenging to dance to--but that's the fun part! Like mixing up Hindu,
Balinese, and break-dancing all in one furious, frenetic funk-a-thon.

Subject: Robert Anton Wilson
Went up to a party in Fon du Lac, Wisconson this past weekend.
Not really for the music (which was pretty good while it lasted,
also this is the only IDM content here so move on if you're the
annoyed type), but to see Robert Anton Wilson speak. He
apparently was flown in special for this event, which was
surprisingly underpopulated.
When a writer like Wilson is going to show up, people should
make every effort to check the event out. But kids these days,
either they're oblivious or were too tired to make the trek.
Anyway, we got seats on the floor only about 10 feet from Wilson
as he spoke on various topics. I actually recognized some of
what he said from the last time i saw him in Chicago. Toward
the end of his half-hour speech, it was obvious things were coming
to a close (some idiots were becoming restless: "Is there music
tonight?!"), random questions were called out by people in the
audience. At this point, no particular topic was in focus and
people felt obliged to shout out just about any question they
wanted answered. It was then that some fuckhead dork-raver
(typical these day, really) shouted, "Do you think you'll ever see
your daughter Luna again??" For those who don't know, Wilson's
daughter Luna was beaten to death (in a robbery i believe), so to
ask this question was basically a slap in the face to one of the
few remaining intelligent voices left out there. Wilson lowered
the microphone, we were close enough to hear him mumble to himself
"Who would ask such a question?"
It was a powerful embarrassment and ignorant thing, and a damn
shame that he had to be flown all the way out here from his
home to witness it at all.
"These are the last days..." Wilson had said near the beginning of
his talk. The possibility that he may be correct in that
declaration becomes more real each day. Bombs are falling, people
are being raped of (and because of) their heritage, corporations
continue to fatten themselves as millions starve, and the simple
ignorance of the populace is amplified by a puppet mass media.
It's grim times indeed when someone like him is treated in that
way. He should have been given every possible polite gesture,
but instead he was hit with an inappropriate shout from the crowd.
A few minutes passed, he stood up, someone took him by the arm and
ushered him off, and the party was subsequently shut down b/c of
alledged "anonymous noise complaints."
Fancy they already had a 2nd venue set up. We made our 3 hour
journey home instead.

Of course that should be "Deutscher." That's what happens when you blindly
cut and paste. My ancestors are rolling in their graves.
