He meant that he was ready to finish the sessions. When I wrote to him
about two years ago concerning "Pop Artificielle" he wrote me back stating
that he had terminated the recording. I wrote back frantically enquiring
why he had terminated it! He said that saying "terminate" is his way of
saying it was finished. So never fear. SeÒor Coconut part two is here.
Well, it should be soon. Any idea of a release date? I heard it wasn't

I would recommend buying it immediately. It's some of the best glitch
inspired "dark" ambient stuff I've heard. Very little in the way of beats
and (conventional) rhythms but if you liked Uwe's work as Superficial Depth
then you'd probably really dig Microprocessed.
Speaking of... does anyone have any idea of what Eyephone sounds like on
their (his/her?) own? Is it normally in the vein of "Microprocessed"?
> There was a copy of Dandy Jack & Plastik Women too, it this one good ?
I don't think it holds up to most of Atom Heart's work but it is a
worthwhile purchase if you enjoy bands like Future Sounds of London,
Orbital and the like. It's got some wonderful programming but doesn't seem
to have the same amount of innovation that Atom Heart's work does as a
whole.

Sorry John, but I'd have to disagree with you on this one. I hate to

Interesting. Matt Haines is/was the guy who ran Spinyl Records... the

I have no idea who Danny Zelonky is. Perhaps a nice detailed web search is
in order. As for Matt Haines... another interesting thing is that he's
credited on a few Atom Heart releases as of late. On "Erik Satin: Light
Music" he's credited with "Kyma Patch Developer". He's also credited with
this same title on "Dos Tracks :)". He's also thanked on "Dropshadow
Disease". He might be credited on another one but I can't seem to find a
few albums right now as my room is a proverbial mess! I need to put some
naturalist in my coffee... then, and maybe then, it would serve me well and
I could get some energy to clean it.

address? I'm hoping I can get a translation like what they did when he
sang on "Render" (some of the lyrics on "Render" blow me away,

Not me! However much I appreciate his more "conventional" dance oriented
material... give me the crazy, idm, futurist, glitch work any day! Let's
hear it for "Schnittstelle", "Dropshadow Disease", "Erik Satin"! I think
whatever he touches is truly golden, but I am not impressed as much by his
pre-94 material as I am with most of what has come after that. Don't get
me wrong, the pre-94 material is still head and shoulders above 98% of what
I listen to and I still think it's absolutely great... but his semi-recent
forays ("Pop Artificielle", "DSP Holiday") redefine what music is for me.
It was like an epiphany finding his music. I knew such music existed --
well, in my head at least -- but I had yet to find it. Aphex Twin,
Autechre and Speedy J came close but none had *everything* that I was
looking for. Well, that is until I listened to a particular Lassigue
Bendthaus album and found the virtual glory that is Atom Heart. Laugh at
me all you will, but I think his music is almost like a religious
experience to behold. Now that you all know I'm a drooling fanboy I shall
go...
- Mr. Tangent
PS: Chris, you're entitled to your opinion about Dandy Jack. I actually
wasn't discrediting the Dandy Jack material but I just felt it paled in
comparison to most of Atom Heart's work. It's good and all but doesn't
have the necessary experimental edge (and I use this term loosely) that
I look for in Atom Heart's material.

If you're at all interested in ambient music, Fax Records and Tetsu
Inoue then go here:
http://www.xmission.com/~ear/otaku.html
Ear/Rational has been soliciting emails from prospective customers who
would like to see Tetsu Inoue's epic ambient work "Ambient Otaku" re-
issued. This album has long since been sold for $50+ (upwards of $200) on
Ebay and from random sellers. If you cherish Fax Records, Tetsu Inoue
and/or would like to have a chance to hear such a beautiful work by an
amazing ambient musician then I recommend you visit the above page and
follow the instructions on how you can help make the "Ambient Otaku" re-
issue a reality. All you have to do is email Ear/Rational
[ear@xmission.com] and pledge that you would send in $15.75 (including
shipping) once this was issued. They need at least 300 people to make this
possible. Anyway, I would love to see it re-issued as it really deserves
to be heard by more ears, and for less than what the current out-of-print
cds sell for. Thanks for your concern.

Eyephone sounds sort of like the other techno stuff that came out on the
Hypnotism label with a bit more of an experimental edge to it. The person
behind Eyephone is M. Behrens. He has released a number of albums under his
own name on labels like label Trente Oiseaux, Digital Narcis and Noton.
Some of his work involves heavily processed environmental sounds. Knowing
your tastes a little bit, you might dig his Final Ballet album on Noton.
It's very "glitch" oriented.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I think Uwe's post 94 material, as you

made and that was about 6 years ago. Recently, a copy sold
on ebay for over 90$. If you purchase it from emusic, keep in
mind that there will be 2-sec breaks of silence between each of
the songs, although the original album's tracks flow one into the
next with 1 or 2 exceptions. You could reburn what you get from
emusic, assuming you have a CDR-making drive, to get rid of that
little annoyance.
To be more general, one could say ALL fax discs are "out-of-print"
the day Namlook has them initially made up, as only a small
percentage of titles are reissued on other labels.

Hey.
Hey hey. So anyway, the question to this year's trivia question was:
What was it that influenced Atom Heart to call the album _Naturalist_?
And the answer is: Artificial Sweetener. Yep... `Naturalist' is the
name of an artificial sweetener. At least that's what Uwe tells me.
A few of you came close after John's unintentional hint, but only one
person had the correct answer... congratulations goes to:

Yeah, I'm digging it. Thanks to everyone here who contributes. Thanks to
Uwe for his input as well (and his wonderful newsletters). Thanks to those
of you who have put up AH/RI-related pages. Thanks to Will for hooking me
up with a place to put the discography. Thanks to Wally for setting up
this list. Thanks to Noah for the wonderful series of reviews. Thanks for
the purposeful discussions. Everyone. ;)

It's been on at least two labels and is currently still in print on
Metropolis Records here in the U.S. I'm not sure of the exact figures, but
I'm assuming several thousand have been pressed. Now if you're talking

Just in case anyone gives a hoot: A "Kyma" is actually software which runs
on a Windows or Mac host computer that controls an external digital signal
processing box for generating sounds from scratch and recording them as
well. I've played around with a Kyma setup once. It's very fast. It's
also not cheap. A Kyma operator can find themselves going down the
"novelty route" *very quickly* without keeping a well focused approach to
sound creation.

What's so rare about this? Anyway, I think I have the disc you are talking
about. The compact disc in question:
Lassigue Bendthaus
"Cloned:Binary"
Contempo (ITALY)
CONTEDISC-207KL
Release circa 1992
Cover is light powder blue-ish closeup of an integrated circuit wafer,
black gothic typeface (Futura?) for all text.
Contents are ONLY samples. No music otherwise.
On the back cover graphics, it says:
<~start back cover text~>
"cloned:binary" is a sample collection of more than 200 sounds taken
directly from master tapes and digital sound sources, that were used to
create the disparate versions of "cloned": drums / percussion / synth / fx
/ vocals & bonus loops
mixes
"cloned:binary" is not only a sample collection, it also demonstrates the
structure of "cloned" its architecture and unique pioneering character.
It also gives an insight into lassigue bendthaus' esthetics of sound and
de-composition. This work should not be confused with a normal music CD!
This special edition manufactured and distributed by Contempo
International.
<~end back cover text~>
I'm fairly certain that I bought this new/sealed for the princely sum of
$1.99 + salestax in 1995 or 1996. I've seen this at local CD shoppes since
then, although not in recent times. I don't think it's rare, certainly
uncommon, but not rare. Check those bargain bins!

E-mail him for prices, and more info on the eps. The above is taken

What do you think of _Shellglove_? I think he reserves that `sound'
you're talking about for his `Atom Heart' alias. It's sort of expected(?).
That and maybe his more ambient side.
> Uwe never goes backward.....
Sure he does. Most of the remixes he does are commissioned by people
who are after his talents as `Lassigue Bendthaus', so I think they're kind
of expecting that trademark industrial sound of his to help beef up their
songs. One release that comes to mind is _Arcane_ by Soma, where there is
a `atom heart remix' *and* a `lassigue bendthaus remix' of the title track
off the single. Two different sounds altogether. The `atom heart' one is
more like his contemporary sound with all of the clicks and bleeps and
neo-jazz noodlings, while the `lassigue bendthaus' version is harder...
much like his post-_Render_ stuff he did while with the Pod label.
Also, what about _Digital Superimposing_ by Superficial Depth? I
remember reading that Brian Lustmord wanted Uwe to make an album somewhere
along the lines of _Live At sel I/S/C_. He hadn't done a purely ambient
album for some time and went back to that style once again. The same goes
for the _Micropossessed_ outing.
Anyway, I think it's possible. He doesn't make these detours that
often, but he does re-animate some of his older styles every once in a
while. Personally I would like to see an update of his hardcore projects
from before 1994. I would imagine he'd drop the 4x4 and add more
complexity a la his remix off of _Oscillations Remixes_ by Bill Laswell, or
what he did for the Swamp Terrorists.

The numbers I gave were for the cd issuances. The vinyl for both

I am also amazed at that album. It preceded the d'n'b craze by five or six
years! I know Uwe wasn't the first to flirt with d'n'b but -- to my
limited knowledge of the genre -- he was one of the first. Another
showcase of this came on the song "jktv/otaku (how many angels can dance on
the head of a modem?)" off of the epic album "Render". Personally I'm
thankful that he's avoided (well, for the most part) d'n'b now, as it got
really stagnant, imo. It was fresh and amazing a few years ago but very
few, imo, pull it off with depth and charisma. Of course, if anyone could
do d'n'b well... it's Atom Heart. Another amazing d'n'b/chaos/glitch act
is the "band" Bisk. Bisk is one of the few acts that comes close to Atom
Heart in complexity and beauty (thanks to Sean C. for pointing me towards
Bisk, btw!) In any event, Atomu Shinzu's "Act" is a ground-breaking album.
But I still enjoy his more recent material the best (besides "Render",
that is). I hope he continues to push the limits of sound processing and
genre-defying synthesizer/sampler tomfoolery.

I may be jeered at for suggesting such a thing, but i for one would
like to hear a new Atom Heart ri project dedicated to the
4-on-the-floor style again. I know i know, why go back to such an
approach after all that's come after? But the possibilities are
by no means exhausted, and a lot of my favorite earlier AH material
is 4otF. There's a couple nice onces on Morpho Fields, Bitniks, B2,
Flextone, be it housey or trancey. I think now that his sound has
become so detailed and such, he could really put some new spice into
those kinds of rhythms.
Alse re: LB. I read in the recent FAQT mag (nice work Mr Kolmar!)
that lb's next release is going to be a cover album of Kraftwerk
tracks done in the Senor Coconut Latin style (!) Leave it to Uwe
to make such a twisted yet stylish combo. I'm hoping 'Numbers'
will be on there.

I think in whatever he does it'll be amazing, but I prefer his weird genre-
defying/glitchy forays to his straight up techno-house stuff. I'd like to
just hear more Atom Heart. Let's put it that way. If he records American
Folk music... I'll buy it. I'm sure he could make anything sound
remarkable.

Noah... where can I get this FAQT magazine? Web site? Did they get this
information direct from Uwe?? As much as I *adore* "Pop Artificielle" I'd
rather that Uwe performs an entirely original album (ie. no cover songs).
I would love to hear a Kraftwerk cover album done in the SeÒor Coconut
style but I'd be more impressed hearing another entirely unique Lassigue
Bendthaus album. Not to say that the aforementioned wouldn't be unique,
but I long for a modern update of "Render"... with entirely new lyrics and
music. I think Uwe's lyrics on "Render" were especially poignant so I'd
love to hear more of his thought-out lyrics (as opposed to his humorous
lyrics on various A.H. albums). Either way, a new lb album would be
*fantastic*! How long is it supposed to be until its out? I had heard
*nothing* concerning it. I assumed -- given the extreme delay between
"Render" and "Pop Artificielle" -- that it would be a couple of years
before we heard anything from his lb guise.

Oh don't get me wrong, it's all good, i'm just curious as to what
some newer ah 4otf would sound like.
> Noah... where can I get this FAQT magazine?
I picked mine up at Tower for 3 bucks. Also comes with a CD.
> Web site? Did they get this information direct from Uwe??
The magazine contains the longest, most detailed and focused
interview with Uwe i have ever read. Just about everything is
discussed, Uwe's musical past, his technique and approach and
philosophy toward music. The neet thing is that the interview is
done by friend and fellow listmemeber Mark Kolmar
(www.burningrome.com) whose music was featured on my radio show
this past weekend. He also did the mastering for the CD that is
included with the mag. It's a multisession disc with playable
songs and an mp3 section.
> Either way, a new lb album would be *fantastic*! How long is it
> supposed to be until its out?
No mention of when. Hopefully the release date will coincide
somewhat with the Kraftwerk tour next year? I remember on their
last tour there was hubbub about them coming back around within
the next year or two, and that 'new' material would then be
presented.

the title of the release in question was. Can anyone fill me in as to what
T-Online is? Does anyone have this track (the AH mix) or know anything

I know it's irrelevant to the music, but there comes a point (obsession?
:P) in a fan's journey that he begins to wonder not only about releases by
his favorite musician, but about his favorite musician himself. While I
don't care what kind of breakfast cereal Uwe eats, nor do I want to have a
pair of his underwear (unless it comes with an ultra-rare unreleased cd!!!)
or nothing stupid like that... I would like to know how old he is. Anyone
know his age and/or b-day? I recall someone posting his b-day before on
the list but my memory is fading. Any sort of bio would be cool. Like any
siblings? I know he's married (dunno her name though) and has one child
and lives in Santiago, Chile but beyond that he's a mystery. I know the
music well, but the man behind the scenes is shrouded. Perhaps it's best
this way but sometimes you wonder these things after working third shift
and staying up for hours while being sleep deprived. :)

Browsing around the Datacide.org site at lunchtime today, I downloaded the
cover image from Naturalist and saved it as my "desktop" on Windows, and it
really looks great (this is the one with the close-up wood grain).
